In UP, Muslim voters first rejected Congress when they failed to protect Babri Masjid and also Congress antagonised the Hindus by not supporting Mandir movement. BJP filled in the vaccum created by Congress's eclipse. BJP's battle cry was Ram Mandir, which was primarily targetted to get Hindu votes and that strategy paid rich dividends. But afterwards, BJP backed out from Mandir movement as it was likely to affect them adversely in other parts of the country, which would have gone against their prime objective of cpturing Delhi. So they changed tactics, got Delhi but had to sacrifice UP. That opened the path for SP & BSP. So far the governance is concerned, both SP & BSP are equally good or bad. For sometime more, this see-saw will continue. But in olden days such defeat of the party in power used to be rare because of the arm twisting tactics. The good thing that has happened is that the second grade politicians are being overtaken by technology which is helping both the administration and the media. Becuase of the media, judiciary is also much more active and this is causing despair for politicians like Mulayam Singh. It is very likely that in the next election, SP will come back to power and Mayawati will be shouting against the EC like Mulayam of today. Before concluding, I must congratulate Mr. Seshan, the first EC to take a strong stand, which helped BJP and they were full of praise of the man. Subsequently, for similar actions of the EC, same BJP had criticised the EC bitterly.
Another important lesson of UP election is that it has proved, the voters are not fools. They will punish all parties for their misdeeds or failures. The present problem lies with the parties who have not yet realised that the ordinary masses realise the game plans of the politicians. All the people cannot be fooled all the time. This is what politicians are yet to realise. If BJP wants their fortune back, they must take action against all their tainted people starting from Modi and including the killers of Prof. Sabarwal. If the leadership can show such guts, surely they will get back the support of the public. Today, people feel, they are as bad or as good as Congress. Both Congress and BJP needs to realise that the country's future depends on them as they are the only two all India parties and they cannot afford to indulge in short term gains for the sake of larger benefit of the country and the party as well.
