Mindset
by BALAJI DASARATHAN on May 26, 2007 10:37 AM  Permalink

i think that its only US admn that should amend their mind set towards India. Moreover any clarifications that was raised by DAE (christened as 600 Pound Gorilla by none other then the US Nuclear Law makers) should be dealt with by open mind by the US and with an iron fist by India. Still US cannot dictate India to sign on the dotted lines. Its very clear as to who was reason behind the Australian change of mind in providing required fuel. Its high time that we should find a alternative fuel for this. Moreover never in the history of India, US was close to us. It has back stabbed us during the 1947 war with Pak, 1971 War for Bangladesh, humiliating Mrs. Gandhi to till now. i wonder what is US going to do with Iran which signed the NPT treaty and enriching the Uranium for its Nuclear Plants other than bombing Iran. US has already facing a sunni onslaught and will also face a shite onslaught. God Save US.

what did burns mean
by Sam on May 26, 2007 08:34 AM  Permalink

What did Burns mean by "...where India could be treated respectfully ..."? So he means that US doesnt treat India respectfully today? They will treat us respectfully only if we listen to them? I will say that China is way better than us..US will not dare make such a condescending statement to China. To hell with Burns

by raja on May 25, 2007 10:38 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

why indian govt gace award to kalpana chawla who worked for american military but not to the scientist who are working in nuclear plant
give power to scientist to take decisions
then u can expect any engine from them
give them respect --some people are fighting
like dogs in streets for their religion(recently in punjab) but how much respect these
dogs have for our scientists
----------some people only cares for their religion
-can anyone in the forum have moral guts to answer why india awarded kalpanachawla rather then some of our scientist who have died due to nuclear radiation then u can ask why babus or sardarji has not performed or not
----what we can expect from the people who fights like dogs for their religion but if national ineterest comes only some dogs like me barking but religious dogs are licking

People give you respect only after you have achieved something, not before. These scientists have failed to deliver anything concrete after wasting billions of dollars of tax payers money. Saying that first respect them then only they will deliver is stupid. You should understand that they work for developing technology and not for getting respect. Respect is something you get, never demand.

Another case of a babu not getting enough attention
by Gurdeep Singh on May 25, 2007 10:32 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

India has been a power deprived country for so long and all our lives we have lived with power cuts. Here is a chance for India to become self sufficient in power generation and we have babus playing spoil sport. Perhaps they are not getting enough attention.

This particular department should be scrapped since it has failed miserably to address the need of our country even after being in existence for the last many years and guzzling billions of tax payers money. Perhaps they are afraid that the new technology would expose the crap work they have been doing for the last many years.

PSUs are good for nothing especially in the strategic defence sectors. Look at DRDO. All it is good at is producing some craneberry juice. This week CAG pointed out that all our warships are sitting ducks because they dont have a sonar. The reason, DRDO failed to deliver. Other example would be the MBT Arjun which is so miserable that our army is scared of inducting it, but for the government pressure. The LCA being developed by HAL would probably take another 100 years to develope. HAL miserably failed to produce the Kaveri engine which was supposed to be the heart of LCA. When air superiority fighters are touching Mach 3 and 4 our HAL comes with a subsonic engine to power the 'next generation' of fighters! ISRO smuggled crucial missile technology from the US as recent as Apr-2006 as mentioned in the US congressmen letter to the PM. And everybody would remember the hullballu when we were denied the cryogenic engines for our space programme. Did we build it ourseleves. No. They were finally imported quietly after a few years.

Guys lets not have pride which is not backed by substance. It sounds good to say we will manage do it ourselves, but can we. Lets us not keep this false pride from lighting the homes of millions of poor indians and irrigating fields of poor farmers.

You need to familiarize yourself with facts first

1. LCA. The LCA flies today and is a fine machine. India has taken a BIG step technologically towards developing world class flying machine. But Kaveri !!! failure !! you say. Do you have any idea about the complexity of fighter engine design ? Even Rafale flies with the same GE engine as the LCA (because SNECMA, the french company with 50 years of design experience is facing delays making the engine), 3 Technology demonstrators, 2 prototypes and 1 limited series production LCA are already flying. At supersonic speeds.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rafale

2. Arjun MBT. Every tanker who has used arjun loves it. "Arjun is bad" is a myth propounded by the arms import lobby. Arjun is heavy (but did you know that it has lower ground pressure than T72 or T90 ? better armor than both ? better gun than both ?) Do you know why Arjun weights 58 tonnes ? Because the Indian army wanted a 58 tonne tank (Pakistan was considering an Abrams tank then). Turning around to DRDO and accusing them of making a heavy tank, when they were asked to make a heavy tank is stupid. Did you know that T90 have problems with their fire control systems ? Almost half of them have broken down ? All of them have torsion bar problems ? Surely russians with so many years of tank development should make better tanks ?

3. ISRO makes rockets. Not missiles. DRDO makes missiles. The "crucial missile technology" that ISRO smuggled was a 1990's Intel chip (the i960

1. The LCA had to be powered by the GE engine because DRDO or HAL whomsoever you may like to call it failed to develop the Kaveri engine after 25 years of development.

2. You seem to be having some first hand info about Arjun "Every tanker who has used arjun loves it". I usually have information from the press. So no comments.

3. The technology developed by ISRO goes to our missile programme. So whether ISRO smuggled it or DRDO doesn't matter. Moreover if we still have to smuggle a 1990 chip shame on us.

Gurdeep,

Engineering in the western countries has been there for some time well even before we were under British rule but considering the amount of progress made by our country post Independence one should be very careful when they make irresponsible comments like this.

You agreed that most of the comments made by you are based on the news coming up in the media which is totally manipulated? Learn to trust our country and our team of scientists first before starting n kicking off your praise in the other direction.

That is exactly my point. Reinventing the wheel isn't going to get us anywhere. At best we might have a wheel and worse still a baloon

Gurdeep I agree with you . Most of our science is Bullshit and our capable scientists are hindered by poor management and incompetent babus.

LCA , Arjun , missiles like NAG , Trishul and Akash are all FAILURES.

Hey one thing about Arjun, it is one thing to build a heavy tank and another to make a heavy tank which can't move. Anyone can understand that a machine meant for war has to fast enough. Here you are saying that army is protesting because its heavy. No my dear, the army is protesting because it is slow and a sitting duck for enemy fire. It seems that DRDO just achieved the requirement of a heavy tank while completely ignoring the requirement of a fast tank.

Now let me explain why. Building a heavy tank does not require any brains while making a fast tank requires a lot of brains coz you need to develop an engine and reduce the weight of the armour while providing the same level of protection!

Well said, Mr. Lakshmi Narasimhan, you made a lot of facts clear. Sad thing is our own people dont have clear information about our R&D instead make assumptions and views based on hearsay and half truths. Thanks for putting your views forward.

Developing the best technology requires the best of brains. When our best brains leave to pursue careers outside India especially in the west, how can we expect to better the west's creations. All we are left with, is second rung engineers. To top it we have SC/ST and what not reservations in the PSUs. Do you think an army of such second rung engineers combined with the reserved category engineers can ever produce what the best brains in the world produce working together?

Wishing so would be living in a fool's paradise.

Idealogy Vs Practicality
by Hari Prasad on May 25, 2007 10:19 AM  Permalink

Is India too idelogical about their neuclear knowledge and skills. May be the whole world of neuclear energy business is goign in a new dierection with all the suppliers of neuclear material on one side. India should join the world rather that doing something in a isolated manner.

Within a matter of 10 years almost everybody like Iran, Syria, Yemen, Malasicia, Indonesia, vietnam, argentina, brazil and haungary will have neuclear capabilities. And even some terrorist organizations like Az Quida, Hezbollah, JeM, LTTE, will aquire capabilities from countries like pakistan to form small terrorist kit which contains small ultraportable atomic bombs.

So INDIA ultimately will join the world when it comes to aquiring new knowedge about n.energy and not struck withthe past and stay ahead of the curve.
