Excellent logic

What we can take home from this piece more than the need to conduct more nuclear tests is what is being said at the end. India is in a rush to become a regional power even if it means making a thousand compromises. To become a regional superpower one needs real clout that can weigh down on at least the immediate neighbours. Just by acquiring fuel for a few more weapons we will not scare China. What we will make china will supply in advance to Pakistan, ready-made. And economic development takes a few decades for a country to trumpet not 16 years of half hearted reform. This piece should serve as an eye opener for policy makers.

Oh so the assumption still ( and might I say like the government of India, YOU are also mistaken ) that pakistan cannot build her own N-weapons? India did? did it? What are the Russians scientists doing there even now? playing Golee Danada with your scientests get real, China doesnt supply anything critical to pakistan in terms of a sustainable N weapon program, fact is some components just like Indias program do come in from other sources. Besides Pakistan has a totally different design of her Nuclear weapons compared to China too keep that in mind, Chinese, Indian and Russian designs are carbon copies of Russians original designs where as Pakistans designs are based on blue prints from Holland and hence are different.

I appreciate your education about Pakistan's nuclear programme. But I must say you missed out on the broad point that I have been making. china is using Pakistan as a front against India. You see everybody (read China,US and even Russia) gains when India and Pakistan point missiles toward each other. That was the rationale for the partition anyway. Where are we after 60 years? still holding secretary level talks and staring each other in the eye. If this had been one country, call it by whatever name, The US would have been fighting a cold war with this entity for control in Asia (the whole Asia). Unfortunately this logic seems to elude people who seek oneupmanship in both India and Pakistan.

The problem is Israel doesnt want Pakistan to have Nuclear, and the fact is unless india get disarmed from nuke, pakistan will not be ready to even speak about it.Bush Govnt will only do wot israel will say.So in order to disarmed pakistan from nuke US is trying to nuteralize India with bribing us with civil nuclear technology.

Israel doesnt want Pakistan to have N weapons? why? unofficially both countries enjoy good relations, we have nothing against them, Pakistan infact 'defacto status' thinks it can play a contructive role in negotiations b/w Israel and the plaestinian authority. No problems there. This is faulty analysis, rest assured Pakistan and israel will not war against each other.

Just test it against Pakistan
by Basker Mathrubootham on May 16, 2007 07:09 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Yes, India did agree to a self imposed moratorium. What is the point in testing nukes when you will never ever use them. Except for the US which used it against Japan, no country has ever tested nukes against another. This being the case where is the need for them. If you want to use em against your enemies, just test them across the borders. After all, unlike US we don't have our enemies far and away. They up close across our border. Just drop a few of them in China and Pakistan. Test them there.

Sire if you follow the logic of what is the use then there is nothing needed in the world. The nukes are gained to demonstrate who is powerful. A bargaining tool to join the Elite Class. And the rule is simple : Either dont aspire and be ascetic, or be ready to compete and compete real hard!
If you ask MHO I would say do both: Be strong and compete and then be ascetic. For a change this article hits the point home brutally: I feel ashamed of talking to chinese now as I come to realize that how much power do they have to even condemn the US and warn it. Their elite status is reflected in the seat in UN as a permanent member. Do we not feel ashamed of it. But I guess we do not have time ... we have other imp issues to fight for... northi southi, hindu muslim or yadav gujjar, and the list continues ....

I do not realize what kind of indian talks about the deal with US ... two options come to my mind : either there is a genuine misperception that there is no big small in the world ... and assume that US believes in this (sab barabar hain) ... Living in US for last couple of years if there is anything they are not willing to be is equal to anyone in the rest of the world ... so that does not look to be true ... the only other option seems to be that we are ready to sell ourself ... our freedom to retest, and compromise our nuclear capabilities ... and this is based ont the previous agreement that hey be friends with equals .... so if we want to be friends with US or anyone ... lets first be equal to them .... Fire daily monthly or however soon one can and develop the capability that puts the chill in the heart of the US/ china or whosover and then we will talk abt peace and all that stuff .... do not take one's laziness and cowardice to be a sign of peacefulness .... be cautious of one's own actions !!

Its about how affirmative we can be with the US
by George Thomas on May 15, 2007 11:31 PM  Permalink

Its about how well we can tell the states that to test or not to is our right & we will take a decision based on our threat perception. They also must be told that we can behave irresponsibily ie make firends with Venuzeala, Iran ect & may be some nuke transfer if they dont do away with the Hyde act. Also give them an incentive(of course for a price)access to our bases & refueling & repairs. we can also let them station troops & our army will run the logistics for them. In exchange the deal will go thru minus the hyde act, 200 odd F-18s & F-35 with AeSA technology transfer. Iam sure this will send the deal through without any issues for our security intersets. as far as not conducting any more tests are considerd its because we Indians like to blow our trumpets even for the most quicxotic of reasons.........

Nuclear weapons
by Abbas Ali Rehman on May 15, 2007 10:27 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

India needs strong nuclear weapons. Look ate Indias neighbours. No one can remain peacefully in India with such kind of neighbours. USA is presuurising us by all means to go awau from nuclear programs. But the thing is that India should become self dependent so that no on eis able to deictate terms to us. If USA can condemn other for testing nuclear bombs even when it is continuing with its own nuclear program then that is becasue USA is not dependent on any one.
Any way this was a good article. Need to think

well said Abbas .... There are some things when no one risks intervention ... why even think that US intentions are genuine ... even if they are why dont they go to China for such a deal... or why dont we have such a deal with them .... that is why dont we have access to their facilities ... till such time there is no pro quid pro a general rule is weaker is going to be exploited ... but I very miserably feel that there are some elements in our country where we have a tendency to welcome the outsiders in our home and then cry later that they ruled us for 400 years or watever .... dont know when as a civilization will we become self confident and independent and not invite outsiders for a change in things as critical as security ....

Excellent article - True
by Mukesh Garg on May 15, 2007 08:03 PM  Permalink

This particular article simply and clearly shows us where we stand. This article tells us that India is being pressurized by US to stop going nuclear, even when they themselves doesn't want to stop their own nuclear program. WHY? They themselves are still spending billions in Nuclear bombs field but are stopping us, simply coz they don't care about India's security but only care about their own business. But should India also not care about its own security ?? WE NEED TO BE PRACTICAL AND UNDERSTAND THIS -> U.S.A CARES ABOUT ONLY ITS BUSINESS AND WE NEED TO CARE ABOUT OUR SECURITY. Our neighbours have continously attacked us in recent years and they will do the same again. Thats for sure. We must keep upgrading our nuclear power if we want India to be safe from hostile neighbours.
We don't need such electricity, What will be the use of surplus electricity if we exchange it with our country's freedom?
Our leadership needs to behave intelligently and must not give up the right to test nuclear weapons. Jai Hind.

This article is well said and inline with fact finding.
Actually keeping Indian nuclear program closed and away from international eyes could help rather than asking for Uranium fuel.
Considering claim from indian scientists, we could pour in some more money to perfect thorium enrichment and say good bye to uranium scarcity.
