UP Elections: The persistence of caste
by desijohn on May 15, 2007 11:05 AM  Permalink

Does the outcome in UP hold any relevance for the rest of India? That is, hopefully can Hindus regroup politically, properly? If caste is surviving, and Mayavati is taking advantage, maybe its for the good i.e. Hindus all over India should utilize such an opportunity to regroup politically.

That way, Hindus will get the proper treatment that they rightly deserve, from Indian government.

RSS should promote Dali leaders the way they promoted OBC leaders
by on May 15, 2007 06:42 AM  Permalink

I know it takes time to build a string of leaders, but RSS did that fabulously with OBCs.

Now India's top Hindutva leaders - Shri Narendra Modi, Uma Bharati are from OBC.

RSS must similarly bring many mass leaders from dalit communities in next few years.

Without giving Dalits/Harijans honorable place in the Hindu society, its Hindus as a whole are pulling them down.

I am sure RSS is doing this already. Hopefully, we see the result at the earliest.

Brahmins create history
by J Begud on May 15, 2007 01:32 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

After being downtrodden for much of post-independence era by Hindu-hating (and thus Brahmin-loathing) Congress, Brahmins have finally come through. English media is as usual confused by this emergence and is ignoring this fact.

Brahmins created negative history. It was all negative in the past. Unfortunately whatever they did, it did not help large sections of a society. They are failures. In future, people wmay not even remember these people.

1.Refer to CM of a state simply as CM and not as "Brahmin CM" or "Muslim CM" or "Dalit CM".
2.No heavens have fallen becoz Dalit has become CM.Mayavati clearly prefers merit over caste. Her most trusted aide is Satish Mishra- a Brahmin.

could anybody provide me with a justifiable advantage of any particular caste person becoming a CM or PM or President..? does it matter to our country? Irrespective of cast, creed and religion, if the elected representative does his job with even 60% integrety, the fruits of freedom and governance could be tasted by everyone. It is high time that we understand and realise that while within the mass they do not exhibit hatred between casts/religion, political parties take advantage of the system and create their own vote banks to come to power.

Would anybody be able to prove and justify, that a brahmin/upper cast CM or PM or government did anything in particular favourably to the upper caste/or brahmins or a muslim for that matter to the muslim religion, or a Christian for christians.. we have been witnessing and experiencing the government of people from varied casts and religions but hardly we have experienced governance from them.
when we talk about the religion, would there be a single hindu/dalit/christian or any other religion other than muslim to say anything against or negative to our respectable President shri APJ Abdul Kalam?.. we have all accepted him as the best President we have ever seen.. Has APJA made any special favours or advantages to Muslim relision...

The caste card is used by the politicians only to gain power and under the constitution of India, it is next to impossible to favour governance to a particular caste or creed.

What we need to do is respect every Indian and help each other in make a confortable living and enjoy the fruits of freedom. The government should thrive to ensure that the measures taken by them reflects in developments of the state and its people of as a whole.

caste based politics will last only till the people get literacy and general knowledge about independance/democracy.

Think outside the box
by Kumar on May 14, 2007 07:18 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The author needs to think outside the box and without his usual caste and religious bias. This is a historic moment and not only majority Dalits, a few Brahmins, a few Muslims but a majority of non-Yadav OBCs have voted for Maya. People who did not vote for her in the past as she was using the divide and rule agenda of Mulayam and BJP voted for her this time around. Now Maya is taking about building bridges between people and that too outside the religious and caste context. She is talking about the common man's actual problem and hence she got the votes. In the past BJP seemed to be more concerned about Hinduism and maintaining the ancient archaic customs rather than making the lives of people happy. Mulayam was following the doctrine of destroying the nation in cahoots with criminals and anti-socials. Both of them got the boot in addition to the geriatrix congress.

Rajeev.. doesnt low voter turnout has any effect on this election?
by Senthil Gounder on May 14, 2007 06:56 PM  Permalink

Rajeev,
I accept your points on caste system. Its just a sense of belonging. The status such as higher or lower castes are only artificial created by the britishers, and followed by congress goons.

But in this election, i strongly believe, that the low voter turnout is the key to mayavati's success. With 20% dalits voting enmass to her, and with some additional support from muslims and brahmins, she could win in most of her constituencies.
But, so far no media has actually published her total vote share. Even in rediff, they published that she got 23 % in 2003, but did not publish this detail in this election.

The final truth is her voteshare is same, and so all others. BJP's share came little down by 3 %, and that's not a major loss.

Considering this, and also the fact that 54% of the people ignored this election, i dont feel, there is anything to credit for mayavati.
