The core issue is Caste politics in India...

Casteism in India is nothing but a covert mask of socio-economic Collusion.

Vote only for candidates from your Caste.
Do NOT care if he is Corrupt/Competent.

Don't worry about Merit.
India can import Merit from Chinese at 80% discount.

And just watch the magic....

SC/ST Community owe a lot to Election Commision.
by Rajesh Toppo on May 07, 2007 09:40 AM  Permalink

The strict vigil by EC and paratroppers means that SC/ST and OBC communities will be at ease for the first time in India's history to cast their ballot and make themselves count in India's politics. SC/ST community were always intimidated and forced to stay away from polling and elections in genral. The lack of proper Leadership for the SC/ST comminities was always a handicap and now we can hope for the educated in SC/ST community to come forword and stake claim in Indian Politics.

A considered choice of word
by dull roots on May 04, 2007 05:43 AM  Permalink

To your question -"So, have the Election Commission's measures inadvertently helped the two parties that claim to champion the cause of the lower castes, especially the BSP?" ..... There is nothing 'inadvertent' about it! Fair and free election keeps democracy on track. What we need to realise is that free and fair elections are also the 'economic engine' for free market based political economy. Now more likely than before, the vast Hindi heartland would ramp up the speed of socio-economic growth.
