drdo contribution
by saroj sayed on Mar 15, 2007 09:49 AM  Permalink

why only after drdo. let there be an indepth analysis of other organizations like iisc//tifr/cisr labs and let the public know how they have contributed to India's development.huge public money, at the cost of many others, can not be simply spent and not questioned because it is something with science. there should be justification with everything and accountability.people are more engaged with self-advertisement and portray how many students they drain abroad because they have less to say about their own contribution to indian society.

DRDO
by krishna raj on Mar 15, 2007 09:38 AM  Permalink

DRDO is another govt. organization with lot of hype but no substance.

Any organization has to work under competitive environment, with specified time for different programs. This can not happen in govt. sector.
Govt. should remain as regulator and for welfare
of people.

One thing politicians should understand, that their aim is to uplift the
country and it's general population , not those handfull of burecrats and govt. staff.

Let businessman do business.

Defence developments are like any other industry
with developments ,new designs and technology
keeps on coming/ evolving with time.It is not a place for burecrats or govt. staff to pass time.

Speed is today's buzzword. if you don't get proper invention in right time, then it is all
waste for govt.'s /people's money.

Everybody has to change the mindset.
We all know that all our public sectors started
opening their eyes only once they thought
their survival is at stake.

All this foreign tie ups will be another waste.
Our priority should not be how to save DRDO,
but should be how to save the country and how to keep pace with outer world in technology.
Only private sector can do this. Not our pampered govt. staff or burecrats , with safe jobs in hand, no motivation, tied up in red tapism and only interested in moving files
between different departmens.

Role of R&D in Defence of country
by sanjeev on Mar 15, 2007 09:38 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

No, Not at all instead of criticizing, let us know why DRDO doesn't work.
DRDO born in 1950s, but with whom we are comparing it(USA) born in 1792. But just after some time of its existence it start big project, let us give some time to define it.
DRDO duties is not only missile programme. but al lot of other work.
Brahmos is joint work of DRDO and Russia ( project DJ10).
tejas is developed by DRDO and lot of work.
Eq- DRDO is First in world to make typhoid kit( achievment in medical science.)
It gave great success in Material science.

DRDO is not white elephant or it cannot be closed, we can not repeat the mistake of Hitler which give him a big set back in 2nd world war( Neglect the role of Nuclear scientist so they left to USA where they develop Nuclear bumb), ever ist deciding war of india(battle of Panipat -1526. is the battle of science when ist tme explosive are used. English get victory over india because of developed science. even all battle win by india is victory of technology not of men. Further do you think that foreign nation ready to share their sensitive nation with us. if you clearly see then they only ready to sale their old tech.

If drdo is late or fail then reason are.

15-20% of total joining leave DRDO, That include all super brain of india(IITian or equilent institute candidate. retation rate include departmently promoted, people belonging to basic science, or some non defined person.

Is it only low pay would be reason, do you think that IItian didn't before joining it, or they don't have other option.
No, see the inner atmosphere given to them, are they satisfied from their job, or job is enough to full fill their internal ego.
Do you think the man who have DRDO his first option and not joined it to full fill daily requirment, can tolerate second preference in organisation.
Do you think that the men who retain DRDO are able to give best of world.
Men working in sensitive area's is exposed to number of hazard conditions( don't mentioning deliberatly), but there contribution has not been counted or not come in the eye of common people.
IN some Labs, scientist(first class Gazetted) have to share single room.

In the whole I can say instead of closing let us look for other sugestion which can increase proformance and retension rate( other then Pay hike) because all drdo men have not joined this prestigious institute for money sake or to full fill their daily requiment.
Duties of scientist and social status should be such that while doing his work he fill proud.
young scientist should be consulted before formulating policies

RE:Role of R&D in Defence of country
by krishna raj on Mar 15, 2007 09:50 AM  Permalink
It is all good when it is theoritical.
In practical world , all these jobs are centered in efficiency of operation.

Govt. staff live in cocoon. They should live in
competitive environment, where their research is paramount, not in moving files.

EFFICIENCY will not happen in Govt. dept.s where ego and promotion is most important; not the work. Everybody is just interested in safegaurding their interest.

Govt. sectors are organizations where there is no foresight and they need not be, as good people are never rewarded or acknowledged.
After some of work, everybody starts thinking
why should i bother. Let it run the way it is running.

I worked in DRDO for 7 years. I know the system's inefficiency very well. First of all majority of the senior scientists do not have any project management experience or people skills and they would have opened research journals when they first joined, later they are with politics, stock trade and kids education, no R&D interest.
Nobody to train the youngsters teamwork, people skills or project management or there is no direction. Lot of favorism, I know some of the got multiple promotions because of their influence. Only privatisation and competition can not only produce creativity. Just giving more pay won't solve, need provisions for firing inefficient people.
Atleast youngsters came out and worked in the private boost the IT industry and Indian economy kudos for them,

Defence Budget
by sudip kumar on Mar 15, 2007 09:23 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I hope you guys know that Airforce is olanning to buy 126 fighters . Each one will cost around 300 crores. So total amount is 37800 crores. DRDO' s yearly budget is a small fraction of this. Even total development cost of LCA (Tejas) is less than 5000 crores and you can produce n number of fighers with 1/3rd of the price. So the solution is not in closing the DRDO but by strengthning it with qualified young people in zeal to do something new.
Do u have the guts to leave MNCs and join DRDO

Cost of the product includes land cost, utility and other cost, which will be more than the price for sub standard product. LCA uses very old technology, even its software, hardware and control system and other interfaces. Why to depend on DRDO where project management or personnel management do not exist and there is no real accountability. Time has come to revamp DRDO

It is not for getting profit like selling
soap to get cost of production, castic soda
costs everything to calculate!!!

It is for own use & for our capability & for
national proud!!!
No bothering about costs, of course the cost
won't increase that much too in land, utility
etc.!!!

Yes I agree with you guys. The problem is everybody wants money. Who ever joins DRDO is feeling bad once their friends in IT/MNC'c earning more than them. A well learnt junior scientist(-B) of 2-3 experience is using his learnt knowledge in IT/MNC's by leaving. Make DRDO knowledge rich by giving the scientists better pay-package as comparative to MNC's. First and foremost thing is reduce the attrition. I am sure the best research and development work you could ever do is there in DRDO. And One more thing is a good management at senior level and constant motivation in terms of financial and morale will give definitely a great results.

Arjun Tank
Agni miss-ile
Akash , Dhanush , Nag miss-iles

The list of failures of this "safed hathi" organization are too many to list.

They should simply be scrapped and let private companies bid for these contracts and come up with better products

Mr VS
just writing 1000 line program sitting at r office is not wat a missile means

for r info let me tell u that we have diverse climatic conditions prevailing at the border

the systems has to be through at all those places
ofcourse efficiency may not be good frm DRDO
but the solution is not closing it
people give examples of singapore
but why dont u think of ISrael
their are getting help frm US but ultimately they hv their own programes
so foreign collaboration can be helpful keeping eye on the national interest like our pact with US in nuclear field

U dont know other countries failures
u can see ours bcz u are indian
noone discloses their failure
there are some success stories in DRDO
that u dont know
anyway just keep urself updated

All this is Bakwaas. The DRDO staff has to change its attitude. They are not scientists but babus with no zeal. They already have lot of financial and administrative freedom. Anything more will make them no better.

Another way of wasting money. These scientists (sic) as it is don't work or produce any worthwhile things. Now with foreign tie ups, they will just sit in good places and do side businesses while wait for the foreigners to give them some crumps. DRDo should be closed for the betterment of the country.
