Indians should happy but not complacent.
by Shantanu Bapat on Mar 07, 2007 06:33 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I see lot of people complaining about rising costs associated with high growth in few limited sectors. Here are few simple questions that you may want to answer:
(1)What is the alternative? We already tried Nehruvian socialistic, license Raj economy. I lived in India till 1995 and I can tell you all that are complaiing about new system, that it was nothing but a rut. Either you had to be an IAS/IPS or big businessman or politician to lead good life. Now anyone can get a job as long as they have basic education. Pre 1995, a BCOM degree meant unemployment or a job of a chaprasi. Now someone with that degree can get a job in call center and earn decent living. Standard of living is way up since 1995. Earlier, I remember we used to go to a neighbor's place to watch TV because many families could not afford it. Now almost all I know have a TV.
(2)If there is growth only for few people, why should that be a problem for the rest? I mean, if let us say we had 100 poor people and now we have 90poor and 10 rich, what difference it makes to 90 poor, they were poor before? Good thing is 10 rich will create jobs for few amongst those 90. This is a "virtuous" cycle. You can't make everyone rich overnite. Things take time. Growth in country like India will take time to trickle down to all. Just be patient.

right points! Good thinking for the current
situation!!!
Let us try to make that 10% rich to 20% rich
& by that way 90% poor will be reduced to 80%
poor. This way makes the 80% poor good living
like easy jobs & other benefit because of the
increased consumption of the 20% rich & their
higher tax pay etc. This will stimulate the
economy too.

This is one of the few intelligent discussion that i have found on this site. I felt very bad that on indian site either people are hurling abuses in general to everyone to PM to anti-socials or to other posters. This is one of the few that encourages creative thinking.. keep it up..

Genuine concerns
by atindra shukla on Mar 07, 2007 02:26 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Cost of education is a big worry. Govt should rather concentrate on making affordable modern education to all rather than giving reservations. Fellowship system has to be set up for any higher studies and not only science/medical etc. With or without inflation, cost of education is a major concern.

So you are suggesting subsidizing education?. Where will money for fellowship system come from? TAXES! because money does not come from air. PC(Finance minister) is not PC SARKAR!
So you want to fight inflation by paying more taxes? How will that make education more affordable? Just trying to understand

Need to understand
by ranvir singh on Mar 06, 2007 11:32 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Few things that we need to understand:

1. IT/BPO/foreign banking can not make everybody rich and run country. What will happen tomorrow if china and South America can do cheaper job than India. Remember west does not love India but they love Indian cheap hi-tech labor.
2. Cutting down the trees and agriculture on the cost of hi-tech industry will not solve average man problem. Everybody eats bread and veggie everyday. If there is no land left for agriculture then no food. Few smart people try to convince profit and loss in term of agriculture and industrial profits.
3. I know good job, salary, technology and all the latest gadgets are important in life and for country.
But we also need clean air, water, lakes, rivers, big urban parks, unspoiled jungles, high octane number fuel for automobiles, civilized society, good garbage and sanity disposal system, clean public transport, good social security, public services and public health care. We need place for walking, running, hiking, swimming pools, river rafting, cycling, skiing, boating and all sorts of sports activities for public.

Also about, 3rd point,
where do you get all the money from,
Do you plan to get all these from
Agri, bullock & Bullock Dung sales???

We needs balanced growth!!!

By growing industrially, it not necessirly
spoil whole Indian Agriculture!!!
We have lot of waste land which doesn't produce
anything, we can very well utilize them by
growing industries. E-commerce site can grow
on any soil, it needs only some mineral water
forthe people who operate the site.

Regarding air purity, we can enforce strict
standard on smoke.

Regarding global air purity, we cannot control
anything, better don't talk about that.

Cost of the education
by Yogesh Sheth on Mar 06, 2007 03:16 PM  Permalink

Yes indeed the cost of education is worries everybody. As the education is improving by the day, it is getting more unaffordable.

It seem more people will have to remain uneducated just because of the cost involved.

?ho told him to go to Tuticorn. He could have, as well, stayed put in Kolkata. Living in Kolkata, is comparatively cheaper than compared to other cities.

Buddy, you missed the whole point. The point is about the inflation rate and not a place being cheaper then another. Although the inflation rate in Kolkata is slightly less then most of other places but even there it is catching up. This is a national situation and not one off case.

The problem cannot be solved if all move to calcutta as it is cheap.....this is not viable. Whetehr it be Tuticorin or anywhere, the fact is prices are going up very fast....real fast....my dad is in construction industry and he says even government projects surpass their budgets over a period of time....everyone is affected....gov. needs to bring in measures that will bring down cost of commodities.
