Standard Report
by bharat on Jun 30, 2007 12:25 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

This is a very standard report when it rains heavily in Mumbai. Rediff and other news agencies would be having such reports saved as 'templates' and must be simply pasting this template on the web site with a few minor amendments, everytime it rains heavily.

TV news channels will show clippings which only god knows, if were taken recently of 5 years back!

Very easy to report!

I remember years back it used to rain and rain and there never used to be so much waterlogging.

And now just a nights rain is enough to make Mumbai look like Petes Island.

Not pollution control. this is due to consumption explosion. You pack up every inch of soil you own with concrete. Not letting sufficient vegetation cover to imbibe rain water into ground. The main problem is not smoke from your vehicle, but due to indiscriminate mining and manufacturing, that is too to satisfy your artificial needs. Minimize them first. Pollution starts at the point of wants and gradually emerges out at the point of utility, manufacturing and mining. Limit the space under concrete and expand the space under vegetation. Concentrate first on availability of pure air, potable water and unadulterated food, they are utterly scarce now. Concrete and gadgets are nor our aim. Welfare !!!!!! Questionable is human life, because materials have overpowered the nature and natural being, that is human being.

We can!!!
by Samir Sawant on Jun 30, 2007 11:36 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

True!! we CANNOT blame the BMC all alone!!
It's US to be blamed.

When we look for new homes, we ask for swimming pools, clubs, community hall, Gym and what not??
But, how many of us check if rain water harvesting is in place???

The rains are normal!!!
But, the way WE have structured ourselves is too bad and we can't even face these normal rains. I still remember the days of childhood when rains use to continue for 3-4 days together, but we never faced problems as much as we face today.

Think what we have done to the rain water???

Today it pours on to our roof tops, and RUNS to drainages!!! Where is place for MOTHER EARTH to take a SIP of it???
We are applying pathces to the face of Earth.

Having said that, Now what???

We should come up with a system, at ROOT level, which stores rain water.
If we start doing that, the SUDDEN WATER LOG can be controlled to a great extent.

Who will do that???
US!!! Every house will have to do that!!!
How long will we keep the rain water running away from us????
Why can't we use the rain water for home usage directly by harvesting it in our own buildings??
Does'nt it sound like a fool that we let the rain water runaway and purchase the same from Govt. Is this THE system??

You would think it's a joke!! How'z that possible?
Remember the Squirrel story from Ramayana?? So, let's stand and say "I will do my part!!!"
That would be a great help to BMC and yes, to us.

Think!!
ATB!!!!!!!!!

bUT GENTLEMAN PLS HAVE A LOOK AT THE VOLUME OF WATER RAINING in mumbai then say if it is possible to store such a high volume.Further rain harvesting will not solve poor problem of bad, narrow roads and poor drainage systems.

The problem here is Mumbai is basically a collection of islands which is artifically combined with concrete to make a single island and plus further concretised to make it a concrete piece of land. Where will the water go? Naturally it will stay until the rain subsides and the tide goes down. Along with this water the entire citys human excreta gets mixed up and Mumbai becomes one big *shitpot*

Well, though your comments are good but it is not the solution for bad drain management, it is about using the rain water to its maximum so that we use less water from the resourvoir.

You can not store these massive amount of water to save mumbai from flooding, maybe if you store these amount of water it will give rise to other problems related to mosiquitoes.

Yes, the drain system is a problem because the suburbs drainage system was not well planed and hence we see the problem year after year.

People in buildings can store it in their tanks!! Most of the buildings have one tank which stores the water from BMC and another one for water from Borewell in times of water cut.
We should use these borewell water tanks to harvest the rain water.

For people not living in buildings it's even more simpler. Because they store the drinkning water for the day, so all the water they get store in there water tanks is used just for washing.

I'm not asking everyone to follow this, but try and smallest of their effort.

Also, remember, using the rain water is not a compulsion, but storing it, to avoid sudden water logs, in heavy rains is.
You can always drain it, later when the rains slow down.

Beleive me it counts!! Let's do our bit.

I think you have underestimated the volume of rain and the power of water. Do you even know how much water pours in with just one day of rain? This is not about housing society tanks or whatever. This is about oceans of rain water! You cannot store rain water in housing society tanks to be used for a day or two. Rain water harvesting is a scientific process and this needs to be done in large tracts of land and not in society compounds. You could harvest rain water in a spare tank that your society might have and even if all housing societies in Mumbai store such rain water it would just amount to a fraction of the rain that barsofies on Mumbai in a day.

Why don't you get out of mumbai if you feel its rotten ? Do you dare to leave mumbai if you feel its slumbai ? Read the comment from Samir Sawant and think about it. Why blame the political parties when it is you who has elected the leaders ? I doubt if you really exercise your adult franchise at the time of elections. I have a strong feeling that you prefer to go on picnics and just booze out at parties on the day of elections. If you don't realize your OWN mistake, you have no right to point fingers at others Mr. careless harkatul.. whatever..
