Having been brought up in Mumbai, and now shifted to another city I have a unique perspective of life in Mumbai. Mumbai, is a city that teaches a person discipline, or one could say forces it...coz if you miss the 8:20 local, you are not going to make it on time to office... ;) At the same time, the fact that the city dwells people from all corners of the country, makes it a India in its own rights! That is the beauty of Mumbai.
At the same time, having dwelled in other cities of India, especially the Southern cities, I could safely say that the quality of life is better here. I dont need to spend 3hours of my life everyday travelling in a local! Prices are more realistic in other cities, and earning is also more compared to Mumbai in quite a few domains like IT/ITES etc. Bangalore and Hyderabad certainly pay more than the IT companies typically located out of Mumbai...
The huge population once a nightmare to the country has suddenly become a boon in disquise for the economy boom (by creating big market). Why can't it be the same for Mumbai. If the whole population put its strenght in expansion of Mumbai then the whole perceptive will change.
original Mumbai means from Dahisar to Churchgate and from Mulund to VT .... Is this report talking about this radius or they have taken in to account places like Navi Mumbai, Nerul, Thane (the biggest district), Mira Road, Bhayendar etc... then they cannot call it as Mumbai..they should say Maharashtra... hence, this article is misleading..

You dont have any right to blame UP people, what u know about UP people, What do u know about UP agar UP na ho to India hi nahi rehega, dont try to be oversmart here
Guys give some sensible solutions. Throwing out each other is not a practical one. How about building strong and wide bridge over the creek between Navi Mumbai and the main city. Let the city expand in width and length.
i had the misfortune of visiting mumbai for 3 days. my impression is that it looks like a broken sewer pipe with rats, cockroaches and pests running helter-skeleter. i thank my stars that i am in a professional area which does not have anything to do with the indian stock market or for that matter anything do with the indian market or customers. when i see the images on TV of the recent rains, i really feel sorry for the people living in the city. the government and the administration should wake up before it becomes another palgue afflicted surat.

thank you for your compliments...we are all rats and cockroaches and pests...and we are happy the way in which we live and the conditions in which we survive... We pray to your Stars to keep you always in a professional area having no connection whatsoever with Mumbai for ever.

why do you have to be so defensive. is it not there right in front of our eyes. just because we love the city, does not mean that nobody should criticize it. anyways we should stop talking about Shanghai and try to atleast keep our parks and green belts alive before they turn into concrete jungles.

dont understand why you are getting upset with facts- am happy that you are happy with mumbai as we all are with the cities/towns where we live but civic amentities are lacking in all. We must always try and better the roads/drainage and other services so that we are at par. Nothing to get upset about. I live in Calcutta which was the worst place to live in from 1970's till recently yet loved the city and the atmosphere but cursed the power cuts/roads/drainage-water logging and everything. Do not excuse the authorities for not providing the services which they should have.

I think it is not a question of loving or hating a city. It was a city which India was proud of. Let us work to regain that glory. If you proud to be a Mumbaikars, please let us display it in opposing unplanned development. Though we have lived here for more than 50 years, and proud of the city and heritage, sadly what the reader'campro' says is indeed true. most visitors will leave mumbai with that image. we can not blame them for that.

Dear Sameer,
Please dont blame only UP & Bihar, everyone in equally Responsible for the same. for e.g. if u can go to any muslim family just see their member for family. every one is here to earn some money.
