Khaphalu should have been taken !! Alas
by Vishnu Sharma on Oct 04, 2007 05:03 AM  Permalink

Check the map:
http://www.blythe.org/afghan-maps/kashmir_area.jpg

In 1986, Pakistani army received another setback. In an extraordinary act of valour and skill, Subedar Bana Singh captured 21,000 ft high Qaid Post from Pakistanis. India renamed the post as Bana Post and this earned Bana Singh India's first and only Paramvir Chakra after 1971. After this defeat, Benazir Bhutto tauntingly told late General Zia-ul-Haque to wear a burqa.

To dislodge India from Bilfond La, Pakistan raised an elite Special Service Group (SSG) commandos in 1987. It built up Khapalu garrison with eight thousand troops. General Pervez Mushraff, then incharge SSG, and now Pak Army Chief, spent his first soldier's night with SSG at Siachen. Pakistan launched the assault in September 1987 and suffered a crushing defeat.

Though Pakistan failed in its attempt to capture the Bilfond La pass but Indian also lost the strategic initiative. It failed to appreciate that takeover of Khapalu rather than the control of either Siachen or the Saltoro-ridge line was strategic to Indian security interests in the area.

If Khapalu had been taken, then supplying troops would have been a lot easier via the Shyok River and very much economical.

Let us make sure to take Khapalu next time.

Jai Hind !

to hell with you. Country is not made by just going into armed forces it is made by people who work and bring money so that armed forces could be fed and maintained. Stop posting this bullshit about north or south. People like you should be driven out of the country.

Very Nice article By rediff. Thank you.
by navin pillai on Jun 28, 2007 08:52 PM  Permalink

Thanks to the Interviewer. Very sensible Headlines too. Instead of the usual jargon.

Very inspiring article. I'm not worried about the past. Its the present and the future.

Our leaders made some mistakes. But they did do lots of great things for the countries improvement.

When this soldier can refuse a 15000 monthy allowance for a paltry 160 monthly allowance. I cannot even imagine the dedication and love he has for his country.

How much ever I say I love my country cannot match THIS soldier.

His life is a true example of being a inspiration to others. Hope we learn from him.

Even he is not affected by past. he knows he cannot change it but surely tells us that we can learn from the past.

Not that we have to go and start the fight. But we need to know how to prevent the fight. And lead a peaceful life.

It is what we do in our lifes that governs, what is going to happen with our family, our society, our nation. Each person is responsible for changes in the society.

Indians need to realise thier potential and stop cribbing and take a stance for development not "Destrution".

Rs 160 a month as allowance to a true hero, what these so called chief ministers and prime ministers are doing, how come they can do such a disgrace to a gallant hero. This means they are not at all respecting our country india. This is really very bad.

Truth should come out now

Quite frankly India should have never been divided, two nation theory was fundamentally wrong, British were succeeded finally in dividing the country. Gandhi and in particular Nehru failed to realize the gravity of the situation, they should have let the Jinna become the first prime minister of India but no the self interest of Nehru didn't let it happen. The reasoning given to Jinnah was that since India is a majority hindu nation and they wouldn't accept a muslim PM, which lead Jinna to creat Pakistan with the help of british otherwise he was the most secular muslim of his time. Both Jinnah and Nehru were not saint they both want to get the top post, and India became the victim of their greed. It was the biggest political error of all time.

The division was wrong territorially too, why a 95 percent muslim populated land (Kashmir) didn't go to pakistan, and Bangladesh a land far far away to Pakistan. Again a stupid reasoning is given because the Kashmir was ruled by hindu raja and he didn't want to go to pakistan is all bullshit than from that point of view Andhra was Nizam territory and the whole india was Mughal territory before british should have gone to Pakistan.

Interestingly what Gandhi and Nehru failed to realize that nat far away in 1857 it was the same majority hindu nation got together under a muslim king named Bahadurshah Zafar to get rid of racist and cruel british raj and for the record we still are secular the majority of indians hidus and non hindus a

continue....from above....

Interestingly what Gandhi and Nehru failed to realize that nat far away in 1857 it was the same majority hindu nation got together under a muslim king named Bahadurshah Zafar to get rid of racist and cruel british raj and for the record we still are secular the majority of indians hidus and non hindus alike want APJ Abdul Kalam to remain a president for the second term against hindu candidates. It was british who cheated us and used the greed of our leaders to divide us and now it is our own leaders together with misguided Bajrangis (Modi) and jehadis doing the same thing

let's just forget about the partition. It shows that we have given up and people in pakistan don't feel that way, then why should we dream? does it show we can't manage pakistan as an enemy and we are giving up? These kind of reports are never discussed in pakistan and never show up in people also. Let's learn to manage our one diversified india,, should we?

We,the Indians, can boast of a such gallant hero who dedicated his personal pleasure for the prestige, unity and sovereighty of our country and successful mission. Rediff should depict the history of such National heroes who fought against the British Raj to free our country from the foreign rule$bondage and made our country independent..In this regard--I fervently appeal to the rediff to publish an article which may help to unveil the death mystery of Netaji Subhas chandra Bose.
