I am surprised to see parachute in Space Shuttle..

Is the shuttle dropped from SPACE station with parachute?

Hi Senthil,

The parachute in the shuttle is an aid to assist the braking system. The shuttle enters the atmosphere like a glider and lands at relatively high speeds, while it does not have conventional aircraft-like landing gear. That's why shuttle deploy a parachute while landing. It is deployed only at touch-down. Hope this is clear

The parachute is released after the craft touched the ground. This is done to reduce the momentum and hence speed .
Many fughter jets also use the same technique.
The landing is similar to any other aircraft landing.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha uggh...sorry, I just couldn't control my laughter.

Dear Senthil, most of the aircrafts & space crafts which tarvel at high speed requires a chute to exert some control over the landing.... Its not because it has been dropped from the space station.

Chute only operated where there is air pressure and gravity (some force). A parachute is of no use in outer space.

You see this on aircraft carriers also, where you have shorter runways and the high tech aircrafts, which come in a tremendous speed have to be slowed down by releasing the parachutes. Otherwise, they will land up on the other side of the runway on the carrier - which in this case is not some grassy patch but sea.

Parachute is to reduce the speed when the shuttle touches the runway at very high speed. It enters the atmosphere at 5times greater than the sound speed.

SO WHAT ?
by Vivek Agnihotri on Jun 23, 2007 10:16 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Guys . Guys . Guys
Wake up now, its started to bug me now.
Sunita this, sunita that , Laxmi Mittal this, Laxmi Mittal that and the list goes on.....
Pls be informed that sunita ia a born Indian but is an AMERICAN NOW (by choice).
She prefers Pastas and Pizzas over Channa Bhaturas and Biryaani.
Its only her name that reflects her Indian Connection, agreed media has made her big but aren't we able to put things in the right prespective?
Believe me, she would have been just Sunita Ben had her father not migrated to America and she was exposed to such venues.

dude,
1. she is not born in india, and it doesnt matter, when some one achieves something great, it is ok to talk about it and when there is an indian connection it is even better.
2. half of resident indian teens prefer pizza over channa bhatura, so what.
3. you do something great instead of cribing, then we will all say 'vivek this, vivek that'

I think both of you are right, but even i think for anything which has Indian connection is blown out of proportion. There are six other people too. Lets take this easy, its absolutely right that Sunita has just Indian name. Lets accept that we are some 50 years behind any developed country and if any one of us breaks barrier and leaves this country to some developed country, its just that he/she gets these opportunities.
The way its shown in media is just creating hype and seling their TRPs but the fact is that this may just be very normal for all those who travelled in Atlantis and probably they may be laughing on India looking at all this.

Sunita Williams
by RAKESH DOGRA on Jun 23, 2007 10:14 AM  Permalink

This time the only interest was whether Sunita William along with other astronouts will land back from space safely or not and thakfully she and others have come back safely.
It does not matter that Sunita only carries Indian name otherwise she is all for America the country who adopted her.
But all progressive minds should welcome that all space crew have come back safely from their space mission.Because these are the people who have really contibuted to the progress of mankind with their shear courage and dedication.
"Hats off to them"

Hello Mahendra, the first part you are right but in the second part you are totally wrong. There are cheats in Americans as well. If you have any doubt you can contact the export community in India they will tell you horror stories of being cheated by Americans.
