experience and age matters
by PD on Jun 22, 2007 05:20 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

its experience and age matters the most..When they did study did they taken into account age factor? if elder sibling is 3/4 years elder than younger then IQ must be higher as he has more knowledge, more exposure and all..

My observation is, if you compare 10 year old child and 5 year old child then sometimes, younger one is more sharp..(this we always observe around us and we call it as next generation is really very smart..what we came to know at the age of 10 now this new generation talks about it at the age of 7/8 or something like that).. isnt it? ---- this is again due to more exposure for yougener generation than older ones..

After all comparing these figures 101 and 103 is i think useless...!!

i mean more facilities to look into.. tv, internet, more load of study (as study burden is year by year increasing) for younger generation.... or it is genetically?

What the Rediff version of the report misses out:

"In the study, Norwegian epidemiologists analyzed data
on birth order, health status and I.Q. scores of
241,310 18- and 19-year-old men born from 1967 to
1976, using military records. After correcting for
factors known to affect scores, including parents%u2019
education level, birth weight and family size, the
researchers found that eldest children scored an
average of 103.2, about 3 percent higher than second
children and 4 percent higher than the third-born
children. "

The military records of men were analysed! How does this extrapolate to the general population?

how the hell it matters...
by Charan Chaupal on Jun 22, 2007 05:13 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

does it really matters. i mean an iq difference of 1.5 - 2.5 is not going to decide how successful you are going to be in life. It all depends on the opportunity provided by the parents to their kids for growth, and proper nurturing. such kind of biased studies only create false complexes among millions.

well with due respect report never said that the elder sibling will be more successfull in life than the younger, it only says that the average IQ level or the smartness level is higher in first born child comapred to his/her younger siblings

I have studied the same here and found the Norwegian scientists are wrong. The last one is always smarter. Also aged parents kids are smarter than others...Just check this with your neighbours or relatives...

why this happens?
by on Jun 22, 2007 03:41 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The younger ones are always subconsciously competing with the elder ones. Competition makes them agressive but not intelligent.

It's more on the

It's all in the matter of whether the child is given the position of responsibility or the amount of attention given or in short, the status given to the child.

Coming from a family of five children, and coincidentally favoured by my grandparents and thus singled out, I was the one given the most attention and hence more tutoring in my formative years, though I am the 4th child. As a result I am relatively smarter than my other siblings. My position as the one with the greatest capacity to give my family a better living, which came to me at an early age of 14 when I received a scholarship to study abroad, have a better education and a much better future, cemented my intellectual improvement with all the encouragement I got from those people who are hoping for my help in the future.

To me, and to my friends who are on the same boat, the relative IQ of a kid depends very much on the relative encouragement and importance given to him.

Of course, the study is talking averages. Exceptions will always exist.

Moreover, that you are more intelligent than your siblings is your own opinion. This might not be factually correct. IQ measures basic level intelligence which may not depend much on the schools you attend.

The truth is I am academically better than the rest, which probably what the research was about. My father attests to it. Everybody does actually.

I'm not lifting my own seat here, nor am I disproving the study. I was just saying that it's a matter of attention or motivation given to the kid.

Peace out.

Practice makes one better
by Pratap Singh on Jun 22, 2007 03:30 PM  Permalink

This is absolutely crazy. How can anyone justify the level of IQ based on the whether the person is a first born or not.

No one is born with a talent. The become great through practice and dedication.

If you think that you do not need to do anything and rely on a great IQ because he or she is a first born then it is absolutely absurd.

Practice makes one better.

absolutely right..
by Ramkumar D on Jun 22, 2007 03:24 PM  Permalink

i've been wondering for a very long time. This is true.. to add to that.. first born of parents who are also first born have high IQs.
Someday somebody might research on this too..

Absolutely you are right. You will notice that horns come later than ears and hence sharper. Likewise younger generation more faster than old generation(as in the case of children are more sharp than parents) due to evolution. Present generation studies are more tougher than older generation. Therefore child is father of the man.
