Kalam as President again?????
by Savio Moraes on Jun 22, 2007 01:00 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I fail to understand this clamour for president Kalam to run for presidency for a second term.

In my view a preson should be re elected based on how he has performed in the previous term.

I'm afraid his performance has not been very inspiring.

Two notable situations which come to mind

i. The Bihar fiasco when he consented to president's rule in Bihar and

ii. Sitting on the mercy petition of Afroze for more than six months

Kalam is a good man and a great scientist ...a pride for our nation ever starving for heroes.
But is that enough to be a good president . . . I seriously doubt it.

It is a pity that people want Kalam to be President and deny a lady who has spent more than 30 years working with the people and is indeed a true representative of the people. Typical of the people in the city who do not represnt majority of India. Prathiba or anyone like her is the true represntative of India. She may get elected through bad politics, but any day she is a more deserving candidate than any we had so far. A scientist or economist is not what we need for President or PM. We need someone who really represnets the people

Dear George, Well how many people know Prathiba Patil before this dillema !!!..so how you can assume she is people's rep...but many of them definitely knew Mr.APJ Kalam even before he was a President. He is not just a scientist, in his term he has represented india in a big level and people in other countries were really fascinated about the knowledge and culture he carried with him. This no president has done so far...thanks

its the turn of media..both electronic/visual/audio and paper
by aravind on Jun 21, 2007 11:55 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

In the present suitition..
I think Kalam can certainly become president..if all forms of MEDIA, keeping their material gains aside should approach every corner of india and directly talk to the people and show that in all channels and news papers..

Particularily they should collect the opnion of those places where congress was elected.

After all media people are also indians..and Hence

I SINCERELY REQUEST REDIFF AND ANY OTHER MEDIA PERSON READING THIS..PLEASE GO TO THE PUBLIC AND SHOW TELECAST THE PUBLIC DEMAND..

IF SOME ONE READING THIS, BY ANY CHANCE ACQUINTED WITH ANY PERSON WORKING IN MEDIA..PLEASE REQUEST THEM FOR THIS..

KALAM, IF STAYED FOR 5 MORE YEARS CAN INSPIRE AT LEAST 100 YOUNG PEOPLE AND THEY RETURN IT BY INSPIRING ATLEAST 200 MORE..

I dont think 'we' have become slaves of Sonia, but many spineless congress man. I still wonder if they have a d___. If they do not agree with BJP policies they can be part of Nationalist Congress Party. There is no compulsion to be part of Sonia party other than lack of self-confidence

In fact..as far as janata is concerned..sonia is nto the person we ask questions..sonia is not a minister.SHE IS JUST PARTY PRESIDENT..THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH.
I WOULD LIKE TO ASK ONE QUESTION TO THE PEOPLE FROM THOSE PLACES WHERE UPA HAS WON TAHT..""WILL THEY VOTE FOR THE SAME PERSON, IF THEY HAD KNOWN THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPNED""

I KNOW THE CLEAR ANSWER IS A BIN NO..
BUT I HOPE THOSE LEADERS WOULD LISTEN..I MEAN PHYSICALLY LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE FROM THEIR RESPECTIVE CONSTITUNCIES..

I HOPE MEDIA WILL TAKE CHARGE..THERE IS STILL PLENTY OF TIME..

Let's Change Our Political System
by Vishwamitra Singh on Jun 21, 2007 11:49 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

My Dear Countrymen. When I say countrymen it includes countrywomen also (problem of the English language). When the election for electing the representatives were held in 1946, they were held on the basis of restricted franchise, meaning that all people of India were not allowed to vote for to elect the representatives who were going to lay the foundations of independent India. With the result only the concerns of few were addressed. The poor got neglected by selecting the colonial system of Governance. Where only the political masters changed hands but the system created for exploitation remained same. the political power remained in the hands of few. That is the result that today you want Dr APJ Abdul Kalam to be President but few people feel that somebody else should be president. vast majority is neglected. what a democracy.
So let us change the system of governance. Give more power in the hands of people.
First step is to amend the people's representation act. Any person contesting the election is required to win more than 50% of votes polled. And if this does not happen by virtue of many candidates in the fray. Then the first two candidates should enter into second round. This "Divide and Rule" regime imposed by "First-past-the-post system" must go so this this nation becomes real democratic.
secondly we must have the Presidential system of governance with people electing their president. It will provide system the stability and avoid Giridhar Gomang's to topal a Gov

Agreed a candidate must win atleast 50% of the votes and there should also be rejection vote, where a voter could reject candidates. If all get rejected I guess a court judge or local IAS guy or somebody should be send to represent the people of that constituency.

People's President
by Sanjeev Verma on Jun 21, 2007 11:36 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The debate on this message board and across India has clearly shown that President Kalam resides in the heart of every Indian and it does not matter, who actually becomes the president of India. Congress has lost morally. They have belittled the post of president. Pratibha Patil may become the President of India but will never get any respect or regard from anyone. Congresss is anyway going to loose the next general elections. This kind of arrangement will not last forever...till then enjoy great Puppet Show in Delhi orchestrated by Sonia Gandhi.

Very aptly put.

Congress has lost its face with this whole sham. This was probably the last opportunity Manmohan Singh had (after his no show on the issues of Ramadoss vs AIIMS, Arjun Singh vs. IIMs, Moral policing of the media etc) to show that he did indeed respected meritocracy.

But now, it surely looks like that Manmohan Singh the distinguished economist has become a true blue politician.

true yaar, Congress is playing dirty politics. why congress only every party is behaving in same way. 3rd front nominated kalam for the reason that they will get the sympathy of Kalam's supporters (almost every indian)..people look at President and PM as their icon. if u are puuting anyone on that post its cheating with 110 crore people. If congress has some resent against Kalam, they could have gone for some other good candidate (like Narayanmurthy or any one has strong vision and whom every indian adore and respect). But not any one unknown like pratibha patil.

Let H.E. Dr. Kalam guide India as President or as ex-President. It hardly matters. Every Indian will fall in line and give respect for his words. After all, Presidency has got glorification because of him and not the other way round. If Dr. Kalam does not continue the second term as President, he is not the "loser", but only we Indians are the "very unfortunate". One solace is that we have also lived when virtuous souls like Dr. Kalam lived on this planet.

Regretable it is that despite sincere efforts made by NDA and UNPA,they could not garner sufficient for Dr.kalam .in the circumstances it will be prudent to allow Kalam to retire gracefully and get along with his pet plans of going back to teaching profession. His name will be written in bold red letters as the best president independent India is concerned. The best possible alternative in this scenario is to allow B,Shekhawat to contest as an independent supported by NDA and UNPA and a big chunk of UPA votes he is capable of managing and deal a bloody blow to the designs of dregs of society [leaders of UPA] He will hands down.
