time to learn the meaning of democracy....better late than never
by Mikkey Moouse on Jun 13, 2007 10:21 AM  Permalink

Democracy is "The People" in total....when a Politician offers promises to the ENTIRE population, its democracy....as happens in USA & European elections.

When the Politicians offers promisies to certain SECTIONS of the people eg. ethnic, religious, langauage groups etc, then its NO longer democracy....as happens in Indian elections.

A difficult path towards Democracy
by H S on Jun 13, 2007 09:55 AM  Permalink

In present situation Path of democracy for Pakistan seems to be very tough. Pakistan has seen many military coupes since its creation. Apart from military, every civilian government had to tackle the powerful ZAMIDARs. It is almost impossible win a government without support of these two factors. However influence of military over politics can be minimised with political will and through constitutional ways. but real problem lies to tackle local Power Houses. Pakistan governments should constitutional amendments so that influence of Zamidars can be minimised. India did it right after independence Land Ceilings. Under this movement land was acquired from Zamidars and kings and they were paid market prices. This acquired land was distributed to the landless farmers. This process ensured lesser influence in long run. These kings and zamidars started following political way to maintain their influence. Under political regime they were now need to approach people for vote whom they used to rule. This practice since independence has prepared solid base for today's strong democracy. If Pakistani people want a powerful and durable democracy they must work in this direction.
One more important factor is fire power in public hands. In Pakistan having a gun is becoming a culture. Government should also need to curb this trend.
