It is good that Indians, are so worried about GW. But real question is that "are they doing anything about it ?" And the answer is NO. They are worried bcoz they are as usual waiting for some great leader or god to do miracles to prevent the problem. We still make houses near seashore and use kerosene is our vehicles. In today's time, it is not enough just to be concerned for GW. We must DO our part and prepare ourselves to fight GW.

You know something. India is the only developing nation that has less than 10% of the emissions done by Western countries.

But we will be the most effected.
america causes 25% of worlds pollution alone
they refuse to sign Quoto
They are least affected by pollution because of their location on globe.
where as we are more affected by their pollution as well
so we need to think about

the most concerned especially because of the literacy rate of 59%. The global warming info must be in our genes since most of us don't learn it in school and don't know what it actually means.

"Dao fire sei aranya " meaning 'give back those forests'-----------
Rabindranath Tagore wrote in a verse many years ago from now! H e sensed it by his supernatural
instinct! And when? Then 'modern science' was extending its foothold through discoveries/ inventions for human comforts along with some more! Since then science has started taking its pound of flesh! Habits have been changed! Dependence on scientific achievements has tremendously increased !
END EFFECT -- "THE GLOBAL WARMING 'HAS STARTED TO INCREASE DAY BY DAY !
It calls for a tetremendous constaint on may habits WHICH WILL CREATE ANOTHER KIND OF UNREST!
WHO THINKS OF FUTURE? PRESENT DAY LIVES ON PRESENT ENCASHMENTS!

100% true, heightened awareness and action right from us individuals can only help us. we are ttally dependant on the glacial rivers in the north and regular monsoon in the south - this is just the start, so many other factors are closely interlinked to global warming such as saliniy problems due to increasing sea levels, or landmass loss in a country where population is always growing rapidly. its upto us!

Culture play major role in this understanding.
We Indians respect every natural thing Sun, Air (Pawan), river, tree, etc. and consider them as "Dev."
"Devata" usually translated as God by ignorant, arrogant in second grade language English.

Indians actually are better off than many others on the planets
by pankaj kumar on Jun 10, 2007 09:41 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Problem with fellow Indians is that we believe what we see. What we see in India, is dirty roads and that creates the image of India for everybody. I am in USA currently, so I am going to compare India and Indians with America. What we don't see is the excessive waste created by Americans and other developed countries. What we don't see is that we use scooters and motorcycles that are far more fuel efficient than the SUVs that are beloveds of Americans. What we don't see is how we love our public transport system, while there is none so good in America, other than airplanes which actually should not be considered public transport. We don't see that the newspaper (which is already a recycling product) in India is reused to make paper envelope. What we don't see is that per capita packaging waste of India is 2.5 Kgs while that of USA is 77 Kgs. What we don't see or don't tend to remember is Chipko aandolan or the one related to Narmada. Do I need say more about Indian's ecofriendliness. The only thing that is not working right in this direction for India is the Indian babudam.

Rightly put, India and China together produce 12 % of the global warming gasses, where as US alone produces over 30%. India and china form 1/3 of the world population and US has 1/3rd Indias population.

Global Warming - Time to react
by OM Murali on Jun 10, 2007 09:28 PM  Permalink

Mother Earth has been so kind enough to accommodate our injection of green house gases. But there is a limit to natural balance also which has been severely disturbed.

Our Earth needs all time support from humanity across the globe to fight the increasing green house gases. If we are not considerable enough to act now, Earth may not give sufficient warning to her global adjustment. This may reflect by means of powerful cyclone, extended heat waves, prolonged dryness, severe water scarcity, shifting of school of fish, increased diseases where man can't easily tackle the scenario and much more.

So, it is high time to act in cooperation between developed and developing countries.

O.M.Murali

Oh Hiten,

Don't hit at India so much!

Already Temeratures have reached near boiling point on these boards.

There are many things that are still not right about India, after 60 blistering (read blustering and filibustering)years, but love and affection for our near and dear environment is not amongst them.

Only Indians, who throw Kachra out of their windows, yet had a chipko movement and only Indians are adept at recycling waste so very efficiently.

And, Thanks to Rediff we all are so much aware of our responsibilities:

Yes Indians are most concerned about global warming and the New Scientist's findings should not be scoffed at.

With all good wishes,

very true
it is just like that
rivers are drying
fields have no crops
I am able to appreciate this in my own village
people are holding land just with an anticipation of real estate growth or things like that
The yield of the crops have gone down
formers are migrating to cities
commiting sucides
no income from crops
dams are just being raised for individual state benefits
we are now importing wheat

Global Warming.
by Rahul Singh on Jun 10, 2007 09:07 PM  Permalink

Indians and the Indian Government ought to take this issue very seriously. Perhaps China and India are the two most populeous nations where the demographic index is constantly rising. China has controlled its population to a large extent, but India ? we experience the woes in our day-to-day lives. The worst part in India is the vehicle population is outstriping the population growth. Thanks to the era of economic liberalization where middle class families are able to affoard 4 wheelers through loan. The effect is seen on emmission of poiseneous gases by these vehicles, polluting the atmosphere and leading to respiratory diseases. This is very true with Hyderabad, which I feel is the most polluted city in the country.

RAHUL SINGH.
