First let the rivers be Nationalised!!!
by jayson moses on Jun 06, 2007 01:33 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

First of all the rivers flowing through more than one state should be nationalised. And the rivers should be monitored by a non political team. They should also make sure water is proportionally share within states. More over the independent commitee should also plan for more water storages, preseving and maintaining lakes and other water facilities.

constructing lakes, tanks and bunds, water harvesting compulsorily is the answer. the water table in chennai has increased by 5 feet after water harvesting. why cant this be imposed in bangalore where they have reeling water shortages.

Nobody will do anything. Politicians and businessmen will corner most or all of the water resources and sell it for a price. This and other governments will first allow privatization of all water, the levy a service tax on consumption.

my suggestion is - let us stop using cars. Most of the cars puchased are actually not for use but fare purchased for status!

And comanies and banks and Govt is encouraging bcoz they make money.

So it is nexus

Stop this noise
by Vinay Gupta on Jun 06, 2007 01:16 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The whole noise is absurd. Unless the west learns to live in harmoney with nature and develop a life style which consume less, nothing is going to change. But r they ready for this. They r after making money.

West has poluted the way of thinking and way of living of east which was simple and close to the nature. West has to first learn giving up the greed instead of making noise on environment and global arming.

They should come to east and learn from east rather than imposing their life style and thinking on east

actually yes. westernising of east asian cultures will lead to more consumption. capitalistic way of life is more consumption. if you see the stock market - increased consumption reports reflect directly on the stocks.

sustainable development is the immediate requirement. austerity measures will kick in once we are coming close to danger. until then our best hope is sustainable devlopment.

Agree with Vinay absolutely. Our grandfathers & great great grandfathers were much more at peace when they were not having all the pleasures that the west has thrown on us and which has resulted in this global warming

too much consumption is bad. also carbon footprints is the way to analyse. how much water/ energy is consumed in the making of tvs/ fridges/ computers...and carbon footprint for every object.

how much energy, foodgrains is consmed for every cattle, pigs, fish thats consumed. remember we are at the top of the food chain, so even non-vegetarianism out of control will count. moderation for everything is the answer.

Effects of Global warming
by Muralidharan Mahalingam on Jun 06, 2007 01:14 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

In India, we need to have a 'China-like' approach to enforce discipline, be it water / energy conservation, efficient use of natural resources or some tough policy decisions

How many of you have read yesterday's (5.6.07) Times of India ? China has brought out a policy decision to conserve energy, in that no air conditioner will be below 26 o C

We need a Hitler-like approach. Democracy has been misused for long

yes Murali, democracy in India is MOBOCRACY. What mob or powerful says is correct. The whole development model is borrowed from west without having a understanding of ground realities.

you cannot have model of west for 110 crores people.

Hello,
Have you been to china? it is the most polluted country, its water bodies are all polluted, that is why they are in a hurry to join this figt against global warming. Industrial pollution is high there.
You will have a china like strict leader, but what about his decisions, noone can question, right or wrong. If you see properly, india is better place to live than china, china hides lot of bad things and projects only good things to outside world.

climate change
by S Ramakrishnan on Jun 06, 2007 01:13 PM  Permalink

More technically advanced civillisations than us have destroyed themselves by such things as thwese..this is how Atlantis died,Lemuria died, do we want to wipe out the planet and all life forms? If not,we must drastically change lifestyles, simplify life, reduce consumption of energy, make things recyclable, avoid big personal cars, big friz,AC, etc.

by S Ramakrishnan on Jun 06, 2007 01:08 PM  Permalink

Yes,we must use public transport and taxis.or official cars.It must be a strict rule.It is like a intrpalnetary war ..'the Martians are coming'!zIt is as bad or worse than that. So allmust give up personal cars in the interest of avoiding starvation death or drowning death for our own grandsons and granddaughters. It s as bad as that,as close as that.

Why not build a Desalination Plant
by SACHIN TYAGI on Jun 06, 2007 12:54 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Desalination plant could be good option. Countries like Kuwait are Desalinating the Ocean water to make it potable. India has a large coastline and this could be a viable option.

RE:Why not build a Desalination Plant
by R on Jun 06, 2007 01:25 PM  Permalink
Desalination consumes too much energy. we are energy deficient. Countries like Kuwait have oil like water, Countries like India have water like Oil. (thats figuratively speaking), but we have a dual problem of oil AND water.

we'd rather go for a sustainable development. plant more trees everywhere. look after whatever streches of forest, build tanks and lakes all over the country, go for drip irrigation, water harvesting. its easily possible without going in for expensive de-salination.

water
by SAM KIM on Jun 06, 2007 12:39 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The only way to meet water scarcity is to build/rennovate large lakes in rural area's to harvest RAIN water.

A lake of about 1000 acre can sustain drinking water and cultivation for nearly 1000 people.

We should stop building big dam's a/c rivers and there by wasting lot of resources and also destroying forest.

right on the mark. every village should have a bund, a tank or small lakes around. water harvesting should be compulsory in villages to cities.

That's right. water harvesting in lakes has multiple benifits like drinking water, cultivation, ground water recharging and humidity maintaining etc.,

Also by building lakes we won't be destroying forest like those bid dams do.
