These are excellent set of comics. I spent few hours with my daughter today at their website (http://www.virgincomics.com/), and we have ordered all Ramayana, Devi.

Many thanks to Deepak Chopra, Shekhar Kapoor and all those involved in this project.

by Bodh Ramdeo on Jun 03, 2007 08:09 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Indian comics takes US by storm? What storm? The one in the author's head maybe!
You guys never fail to amaze - with your so over-the-top, headlines. Maybe it's bacause Rediff never verifies anything but blindly reproduce anything they're told, claiming it as their as their own.

Rediff is the publicist for everyone else's press releases. Have you seen their music or song "reviews"?

You must be sooo good...
You should only talk big if you are that big... otherwise shut up and crawl back under the rock you came from!

Comics on Christian mythology?
by Vivek on Jun 03, 2007 07:53 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Why don't they write comics on christian mythology where well-known fictitious character, Jesus, fights gamblers? Other one like Noah builds a big boat would make a good story too.

Because then they'd put a fatwa on the publishers.

I am afraid, I do not agree with some statements....
by Anil Puppala on Jun 03, 2007 07:51 PM  Permalink

Dear Mr. D'Souza,
In reference to the statement
"Indian concepts like destiny being the controller..."

I am afraid, I have to differ with your statement by quoting Swami Vivekanda, who himself spoke about India and Hinduism at Chicago in 1893.

"Stand up, be bold, be strong. Take the whole responsibility on your own shoulders, and know that you are the creator of your own destiny. All the strength and succor you want is within yourselves. Therefore, make your own future".

Well, He clearly says that "you are the creator of your own destiny!"

So, hands down.

Lest we trivilize it all
by Ravindra Khardekar on Jun 03, 2007 07:12 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

It is very fine to popularize new/alien concepts through contemporary art forms with mass apppeal. But for serious pursuit a 'comic existence' can become a mental block. The symbolism of gods and godesses does have a deeper meaning. Five elements are not merely some simple alchemy but cosmology explained on basis of Panch Maha Bhuta's. Shiva symbolises Aap the water element. Durga the tej, and vishnu the aakash. Hanuman and garud are Vayu tatwas.
Perhaps billion dollars earned through comics can be ploughed back to some serious indic studies as well.
