Spelling bee
by Jit K on Jun 04, 2007 09:28 PM  Permalink

Although a lot of readers were upset at Rediff's headline, I think the social and media pressure on these children would encourage them work the hardest and put in their best performance. More than the prize money, the pressure will develop competitive spirit and killer instinct. Otherwise they will end up like the 2007 World Cup Indian Cricket team.

Students in India (and elsewhere in Asia) study hard from high school onwards because of this pressure. The same reason applies to why top engineering, medical and business schools in India attract the best talent.

Shame on the Author
by mayank mickey jhingon on Jun 03, 2007 04:57 PM  Permalink

I am surprised or should i say shocked by the way a mountain has been created of a mole hill.
but to be honest , look at th article from this perspective - Given that the author chose the word "DISAPPOINT" simply implies that Indians are expected to win almost always at intellect based or knowledge based shows......
Authors like these love to bring down heroes....
maybe too strong a reaction from me, but this is how it begins

by Supriya Shenoy on Jun 02, 2007 10:42 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

what is so disapointing here that the writer believes the Indian-American Kids disappointed the Indian people all over the world...these kids have proved the fact that they tried...and only when yu try and try yu succeed...some of them will be back....and next time it is definitely one of them who is going to win...does the writer knows only words like DISAPPOINT...could have checked the dictionary for some less harsh words...or may be encouraging words...lets learn something from these kids...they have faced the spellings, the people and the television...THEY TRIED....and we should appreciate that.

We should be proud of what the kids have already achieved. The headline for this article is a shame

There is something called just trying
by Priyanka Prakash on Jun 02, 2007 09:02 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I am so disappointed in your article especially the headline. I am a memeber of the Indian American community and I ma not disappointed by the exit of the Indian kids frm the competition. The spelling beee competition is so tough ...just to get into the competition is a mattter of pride.
Next time please make sure that you don't demoralise kids or anyone for just trying.
Also, I don't think the writer has even seen or knows about the spelling bee competition.
