at first, selfish and rotten politicians should never have been elected by voting through common people. and all should go to vote to avoid such irregularities and corruption.

dear kancj

the presidential election has been messed up bcoz sonia wants a proven sychophant as the president, which unfortunately she is going to have. she did not support reelection of kalam, though oppossition had supported the idea.

when bjp was in power they went for consensus and the end result was a non political kalam getting elected. sonia did not try for consensus.

If elected MLAs and MPs need not vote for President, let we all the citizens take a vow not to vote in the comming General Elections to elect these rotten poticians as our represenatives.

Then we will have ads in Doordarshan , Other TV Channels and Newspapers asking the general public to exercise their franchise (by spending the tax payers money) to elect somebody. If the EC is so serious about the elections, they can conduct some seminars for these MLAs and MPs ( With less expense)to make them understand the importance of the Elections.

SPIRITUALLY WRONG, TECHNICALLY RIGHT!
by Kabeer on Jul 17, 2007 09:01 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Dear Mr. Gopalaswamy,

1. We all agree that it is an INDIRECT ELECTION, RIGHT?.

Indirect Election doesn't mean that it will be the PERSONAL CHOICE of a few hundred elected representatives.

It means, the choice of people being indirectly reflected through these elected representatives when they elect the President.

Hence, TO VOTE OR NOT TO VOTE IS NOT THE PERSONAL PREROGATIVE OR PRIVILEGE OR RIGHT OF THESE ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES, BUT A DUTY, AN OBLIGATION THAT THEY HAVE TO PERFORM AS THEY ARE REPRESENTING ANYWHERE ABOUT 5 LAC (MP) TO 50,000(MLA) PEOPLE OF THEIR CONSTITUENCY!

That's why EVEN THOSE JAILED MPs/MLAs should be allowed/compelled to participate in the election. Their jailing is for their personal wrongdoings not for the wrongdoings of the citizens of their constituency. But here they have to perform a duty on behalf of the public in their constituencies.

HENCE, YOUR DECISION IS NOT JUSTIFIABLE, ATLEAST IN SPIRIT!
IT IS SIMPLY UNDEMOCRATIC!

PLEASE REALISE YOUR FOLLY!

Yes, I fully agree. MPs and MLAs, while voting for the President are not individuals, but representatives of people who have elected them to power. If one MP abstains from voting, it means lakhs of people abstain. Before deciding to abstain, it must be seen whether an MP has ascertained the will of his electrate.

It would be better if elections to the post of President are held directly by the people instead of through their representatives.

Since your wish to vote directly cannot be granted this time it would be better if you control your Polly-Wolly Doodle do da for the next three-four days.

An appeal to all the Members of Parliament and Members of Legislative Assembly of States of India!

Honorable Members!

The decision taken by Sri Chandrababu Naidu leader of the Telugu Desam Party and by some other political parties to abstain from voting in Presidential Elections scheduled on 19th July 2007 is certainly causing much distress and rather heart burn too, among millions of Indian Citizens.

It is highly deplorable to note that Sri Chandrababu Naidu, a leader of decades of experience and having ruled the most populous and important state of Andhra Pradesh over a decade has now taken a most unfortunate and irresponsible decision to walk out of presidential election.

We the citizens are wondering how these leaders who, on many occasions chided the citizens for not exercising their franchise and repeatedly motivated the citizens to exercising their franchisee to upkeep the institution of Democracy; has now chosen to abstain deliberately from exercising the same franchise to elect the same valued constitution head of our country, at the cost of this Nation and values of the same democracy?

Coming to the point of Political preferences Mr Babu is now trying to drive a point to the Nation that:

THEY are left with no other option but to abstain from the Presidential Election as according to him, none of the candidates who are in the race for the highest post of the Nation, are worthy of the post not even Sri Bhairon Singh Sh

When the choice is between the devil and the deep dark murky sea, it would be wise to stay home and watch TV with family and friends.

This way you can show the middle finger to UPA & NDA and yet not have a smelly finger.

JAI HIND. JAI HIND KI SENA.

Voting
by varghese devassy on Jul 17, 2007 08:57 PM  Permalink

The elected representatives of Indian Democracy should be the model for the other people. In a general election the political parties will try to bring maximam voters to the polling booth to exercise their franchise. But in this presidential election, some of the parties campaigning for the abstention .This is double standard. Let any representative abstain with his free will. But the EC should take action against those who are campaigning for the abstentions.

Kickout UNPA from Indian Politics
by viswanath kumaraswamy on Jul 17, 2007 08:50 PM  Permalink

How can MPs and MLAs expect people to vote for them when they don't do when it is needed for that to crucial post of India. How can one party say don't vote at all... they should be punished and constitution should be severe on such people. The whole name Politics sucks.
