Our religion says everything is God. The self or our soul is God. Because of Maya we do not know the nature of our self. We considers ourselves as our body and mind. But lord Shiva knows this truth. He knows that He is the omnipresent Brahman and not the body holding a trishool. So we must worship that form of Lord Shiva; otherwise what we will worship as everything is God. Since Advaita says everything is God will god be pleased if you worship yoyr boots?
Lord has assumed the form using "Maya" like Lord Shiva for us ignorants to worship
