When terror probes and racial profiling go hand in hand

By IANS
Friday July 6, 08:03 AM
Mohammed Asif Ali, the second Indian doctor detained in Australia in connection with the UK terror plots, was released Wednesday without charge and declared innocent. Never mind the ordeal he underwent for three punishing days and the widespread negative publicity that led him to seriously consider quitting his post at Queensland's Gold Coast hospital.

'As with a lot of investigations, a lot of people are spoken to and he's (Ali) back in the community,' declared Australian federal police commissioner Mick Keelty. How gracious!

Like Ali, Haneef Mohammed, the first doctor taken into custody in Australia, may also be discharged late Friday when his detention ends. The police might discover that the SIM card he had bought in Britain for a mobile phone and which was recovered from Mohammad Jamil Asha, a Jordanian national, who is also in custody, was accidental.

Sure, unearthing terrorist missions at an inchoate stage, prior to harm, has acquired a sense of great urgency especially in Britain where levels of hysteria and paranoia have reached extreme proportions after the 7/7 train attacks. Do you know how many times a day the average Londoner is caught on CCTV cameras? Three hundred times.

Educated idiots....
by Rangasamy Vijay on Jul 06, 2007 05:20 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

These educated idiots brought so much of shame to their families and country as a whole. One of the doctor has become a father of a new born child. What will be the future of this child who will be branded as terrorist's son all thru his life. They are not martyrs fighting for liberation of their homeland but devising means to disturb world peace. Their religion has blinded them. Then why waste Govt /tax payers money in educating themselves when ulltimately they are going to follow some hollow ideologies and end up with extremist activities- they can as well be holed up in a madarasa instead and happily develop their hatred towards other religions. I do not know how many more educated idiots are out there rupturing their future and devastating their family reputation..

RE:Understanding Islam
by Srinivasan Ashok on Jul 06, 2007 03:21 AM  Permalink
Already 3 Indian Muslim doctors understood too much of their religion that you are referring for and finally ended up in Jail. Also created pain to their parents. These guys jeopardised the future of all Muslim professional working in UK and western countries. Great achievement.

hmm........ ok. so religion is a reflection of its followers. so then are all christians crusaders or all hindus wife burners? sorry, i am not a muslim, but at the same time, i would carry myself with dignity and not speak ignorantly.

and yes David, Bro, all i can say to you is , you've had a bad upnringing. but then again its not ur fault. isnt it? as per the ideology, its the religion which teaches you to be abusive.

now lets wait for our brother in peace David and many of his likes to bash me with abusive language, epithets and slurs.

Why does Media keep saying ''indians''...in this case...
by prakash kumar on Jul 06, 2007 02:17 AM  Permalink

Muslims in india consider themselves muslims first and indians later. So wouldn't it be proper to call these people caught in England as either just muslims or at least muslim indians.....by calling them indians, they are insulting a 5000 year old peaceful indian culture...

Imperialism: Its many faces
by prakash kumar on Jul 06, 2007 02:13 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The controversy over the song Vandemataram, created by over zealous, ultra fanatic muslims in India has brought to the front a very important issue that needs consideration in today's world. And the issue I would like to bring to your attention is the phenomenon of imperialism. If you look at British rule in India, you would see that british were primarily an imperilisitc power driven mainly by economic interests. Apart from some isolated incidents, they did not have much interest in either assimilating in the local culture or spreading their brand of christianity. Although some would argue that missionary activities increased during British rule in India and that may be true.

I would like to argue that refusal of some muslims to change their habits and thinking in the face of the dominant culture where they live, should be seen as an imperialistic attitude with religious interests behind. Islam is an imperialitic mindset disguised as a religion and fostered in the name of their so called god Allah. Unlike British who came from outside India, most of the today's muslims in India are actually Indian by race. Even then they would object to a beautiful song Vandemataram by citing and interpreting their so called spritual book in a very rigid and inflexible way. It basically boils down to "We are muslims first and Indian later attitude". Anybody who argues otherwise is living in a wishy-washy world, detached from reality. Mohemmed was a schrewed person. This was no ordinary "Pr

MAY BE A PART OF UK GOVT CONSPIRACY
by Rajesh Kumar on Jul 06, 2007 02:01 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I speculate the whole drama of bombing by docs is part of major conspiracy.
1. UK immirations are very biased on foriegn doctors form india, they need them to get out(recent headlines if you rememeber)
2. Gordon brown new PM and within days of he in office bomb plots, fire burns at airport(these could be easily staged by any intelligence agency)
3. they pickup few docs from middle east and few indians to justify their claim
4. guess what, australia is also part of global war on terror.. all of a sudden it detains another doc flying out without a return ticket(there can be n number of reasons to do this) and links it to london plot.
5. now slowly the invistigation reveals most of the indian docs are truly innocent.
6. to sum up, the governments want people to fear that terror is here and it could strike newhere. they also use this against immigrating indian docs by formulating and passing tougher bills for immigration.
6. i would say this conspiracy could be formulated better...they should learn it from the USA.
Rajesh
P.N : everyone is innocent untill proven guilty.

Mr Rajeshkumar
this is a childish rationalisation. they can easily restrict/ deny work oermit to anybody.U.K. like USA is now adopting very correctly a policy of zero tolerance of terrorism.Let 5 innocents suffer but 1 terrorist must not escape.-Deepak Deshpande

all from bangalore? is it in india?
by sunil sirohi on Jul 06, 2007 01:05 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

LONDON/BANGALORE: The Bangalore connection to the British terror web appears to be turning deadlier by the day. Two days after the suspected role of two cousins Sabeel Ahmed and Haneef Muhammed, both from Bangalore, in the foiled car bombings in London hit headlines, it has now emerged that the man who drove the flaming jeep into Glasgow airport on Saturday is Sabeel%u2019s elder brother Kafeel. Kafeel, an aeronautical engineer with a PhD from UK, is lying in hospital with 90% burns.

While police and security agencies in London were cagey about confirming the identity of the man they had pulled out of the flaming Jeep, sources in Bangalore confirmed that the man was, indeed, Sabeel%u2019s brother Kafeel, and not someone by the name of Khalid Ahmed, named as the driver earlier by British cops.

Kafeel is also suspected to be the chief designer of the car bombs which were defused by London police in the crowded Haymarket (near Picadilly) area last week. He was a doctoral researcher at the Anglia Polytechnic University in the department of design and technology. His CV mentions him as the author of papers on aerodynamic designs, computer-aided modelling and fluid behaviour.

The third Indian in what is widely assumed now to be an al Qaeda-linked terror cell is Mohammad Haneef, a 27-year-old doctor arrested by Australian police this week from Brisbane. Haneef, a cousin of the Ahmed brothers, was in close touch with Sabeel. He was nabbed as he tried to board a flight with a one-wa
