...because do we ever think twice about throwing rubbish/garbage on the streets...out of train windows...careless disposal of plastic...etc. etc.????????
A BMC Cleaner can ONLY DO so much!!!!...but what if we start behaving like responsible and civil citizens????...Can we not ensure that we have a social responsibility towards our village/town/city/state/country?????? Can we not stop ourselves from littering irresponsibly????...The BMC is, no doubt, a behemoth, but even it has its limitations....corrpution, lack of good manpower...but if we cut down on senseless behaviour, it will show...!

Excellent, rightly said. The day we all Indians truly understand that it is our irresponsible behavior that is responsible for all these illness, the day we improve on our civic sense, all these problems would disappear.
The global warming is going to stay all over the world and kill all of us. It is nature's fury. There is no point in blaming anybody b'coz the climatologists feel that whole seasons rainfall of say 2500 mm can be over in 10 to 15 days in the coming years. Mumbai received 960 mm rainfall in one day. The former high lying areas have been created now into low lying areas by filling the adjacent low lying areas. This goes on. The railway tracks were at a higher level once upon a time and all around the railway tracks, construction activity has given rise to higher plinths and the water starts accumulating on the tracks. Let the railway tracks and roads be elevated by 4 to 5 feet and the people can move during any calamity because the future is bleek for everybody due to very high precipitation in a couple of hours. 2000mm of seasons rainfall may be over in 4 to 5 days and the rest of the 360 days there will be no raifall. This is going to happen in our lifetime. We have to change ourselves and increase the height of all low lying areas where human population exists. Life is precious and we can not afford to lose human beings getting drowned for no fault of theirs.
Shiv sainiks should realize that its much nobler and useful to beat corrupt and immoral politicians for the plight of our cities than beating youngsters on valentine day !!

It is we who elect them. How many friends of yours go out to vote? Do you? If you do, what have you done to get your friends to vote.
The politicians do not magically get the seats, we give it to them.
Would you stand for election to solve these issues? I will vote for you. I will get friends to vote for you. If not you or any other 'smart' person wants to stand for election, then I suggest you forever hold your peace and suffer in silence.
When was the last time you and your friends cared to take out a demonstration to protest against this?
As long as our young people get their TV and their salary and job they have no will to exercise their political mandate. It is really sad for India. :(

Very true. I have been advocating for Voting to be made COMPULSORY for ALL!!!!....THAT is the only way to change things!!!!...
...All these so-called political parties will be blown away if we, the educated and middle class, came out to vote.
With hardly 40-45% of voting, these idiots grab power....that too riding piggy-back on "alliance partners"...!!!...Sabse pehle Congress should be defeated...only then will something fruitful will be borne!!!!

Nothing to do with congress mate. Or any other party. As long as you know you can get away with it, wouldn't you? The problem is with letting them get away with it. You mess with our fundamental necessities, we pull your chair. Very simple. Let any of the parties deliver fundamentals then we will talk about ideologies.

Ask High Court of Mumbai to do a Delhi type demolition drives on UNAUTHORISED BUILDINGS AND STRUCTURES from Mumbai. Then 50% Mumbai's problems will be solved.
Does anyone have the power to shift the excess rain from Maharasthra, Gujrat, Kolkata to Rajasthan ? We are still in Sun and waiting for Rain. Please pray for us.
WHY WE DO NOT PROCEED WITH PRIVATISATION IN THE MUNICIPAL MAINTENANCE AND UPKEEP OF THE METRO CITIES? AREAS CAN BE DIVIDED AMONST THE PROFIT EARNING CORPORATES & GIVE TAX BENEFITS TO THEM UPON SUCCESFUL EXECUTION OF MAINTENANCE JOB,IT CAN BE RATIFIED BY CIVILIAN WATCH DOGS AND NGO'S. PLEASE SHARE VIEWS ON THIS SUGGESTION.
Rain water harvesting should be made compulsory in all cities and towns and even villages .This will raise the underground water level. It is successful in Tamil Nadu and instead of precious water goind into the sewage and drains could replenish the underground water table. It is easy and not expensive. Perhaps it will solve the water logging on the streets to some extent.

People like Shabana Azmi who oppose the clearing of dirty slums should be forced to stay in them or accomodate the slum dwellers in her house!

boss raju, it will be the same story wherever it rains in india; be it mumbai, kolkota, delhi or chennai. these cities are burdened with too much of migration. whatever be the natural calamity, the heavy population density magnifies the problem to a much greater extent. really can't blame the civic authorities. a much bigger thinking is needed to avoid the collapse of these cities.

very true, joy. we all find it easy to blame the civic authorities for flooded roads, rail networks....but have we ever thought that the drains are choked because of the c'rap plastic we throw carelessly on the roads or out of the train windows???????

Jokes apart, this is a matter of serious concern, be it any city - Kolkatta, Mumbai, Chennai or any other place.
Now we are becoming global super power... Mumbai is in the top ten financial hubs of the world... Persons like Amitabh Bachhans house in full of rain water... Mukesh ambani is building a house in Mumbai with 600 servents to serve him... we are not being able to construct a proper drainage system in this financial hub... pl think where we are and what we are and whar should be our priorities... before talking very big...
