Stress in Defence
by harpreet bhugra on Jul 02, 2007 10:39 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I do not agree that the suicide is due to Gender Bias or work related stress. I have worked as an SSC officer and am in the civil world now. As a woman the care and family environment you get in defence is 100 times better than the hostile civil cut throat competitive environment. The Defense forces is the best kind of service for women where we are respected, taken care of and groomed to handle all kinds of situations independently. Today my success in any sphere is due to the way I was groomed for 11 years as an engineer in Air Force.

Mr.Harpreet ,Indian Army is no longer respected.
There were many cases of suicide in the past.
Also, there are incidents where they throws out passengers from a running train and rapes in remote areas.
Maybe u r fortunate to get a good environment, but nowadays Indian Army is not a good place to work for sincere and honest youngsters.

The working conditions in airforce and army are drastically different.
Army officers have to face far more hardships as compared to IAF officers.

harpreet I m also an SSC officer in IAF...but have had the misfortune of working along with the army...u r somewhat right about the air force...but things are way too differenrt in army...its an inhuman sexist organisation where people r neck deep in corruption and nepotism....there is a hell of a difference in the way of working of army and air force....
n for the "india should be ruled by army" jingoists...i can only say that even god will not be able to help our countery if dat happens...

Whatever u say is right and maybe u haven't faced all the problems but that might not hold true for others. See I am not femiist I know that they are many men who face harsh condition and stress in the army and as a result go through a pitiable situation. But this is also a fact that maximum suicides that has taken place among high ranking officials are women. You were lucky for not having faced any kind of exploitation but may be others are not.

Gender Bias!
by Moumita Boral on Jul 02, 2007 10:21 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

ITs true women have acheived skies but still they are some domains like Army, Navy and Airforce where women still are considered as weaker sex. In Private sectors many women are ruling the roost and people dont mind being under them. But these Govt. sectors specially armed forces they are many who come from conservative areas where women still are nothing but mere sex symbols and child producing machine so for them being ruled under woman is something that hurts their ego. Either a high ranking woman official is ostracised by her juniors who simply dont want to co-operate with her or she is sexually and mentally abused by her immediate peers who simply treat her as an object of fun. For the past 5 years we have found that maximum high ranking female officers have commited suicide not males. Why?

Don't jump to conclusions without knowing the facts of the case. How did you assume it is gender bias? Just because it's a woman?? Don't men in the army commit suicide?

go by the records. There is a big % difference, in the forces, between sucide rates of male vs female officers. There is indeed a gender bias in Army forcing young female officers to commit sucide. An enqiry needs to be conducted. Shame that tis happnes in ARMY.

Suicides in Army
by deleted on Jul 02, 2007 10:13 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Its hightime that army is still living in past while dealing with its human resourses.Stress and lack of congenial atmosphere are responsible for Suicides and killing of fellow colleagues/officers by armymen. The need of the hour is to have qualified councellers (who themselves are not under stress) to help not only armed personnel but also the members of their family and build a congenial atmosphere without affecting the discipline.

it has been observed several times that in army committing suicide rate is quite high due to bossism, strict actions, transfer to remote areas and tough exit policy. Gov should adept new strategy & amend in existing modal to create a congenial atmosphere for each one of the citizens.

If a single person decides to die, then the entire country can't be blamed for that Gentleman. Whatever circumstances forced her to commit suicide must be really very bad but suicide is not the answer.

A lot of my own very classmates (women) are in the Indian Army in various parts of the country. One in Siachen, one in Nagaland , one in Orissa, one is a Commando at an undisclosed location and many others. They too have problems, they fight back like we all do and not resorting to death.

She was a responsible officer of the Indian Army, if a well educated officer like took to suicide rather than fighting back against the problem then she is to blame and not the system.
