Lets be pragmatic. USS Trenton is a 17000 ton ship with specialised role as landing platform and carrying men and material. It is the 2nd largest ship currently after INS Viraat. The next largest ship in this category with Indian Navy is a 6700 ton ship in INS Magar Class which is indigineous. Some facts, the 4 state run ship yards have their hands full and currently they are building 31 ships. India is self-reliant in ship building. As the naval ship has admitted that this ship will give good experience to Indian Naval Sailors to handle such a large ship with a different and specific role.
Its time we INDIANS start manufacturing warships on our own. Labour is not a problem nor is money an issue. Engineers are the foundations of this country. So why cant we do it?
I dont understand the rational behind getting a technology thats 40 yrs old to people of india, when we claim to be sych with whats going on globally,we have the latest mobile phones, ipods and what not being marketed here.

First learn, then buy new 40 years old yes. The rationale? here goes. All of us first learn how to drive a car before buying one. Again, most of us buy a second hand car, gain some years of experience behind the wheel, then go for a new one. Exactly the case with Trenton. The Indian Navy as of today, does not have a specialised ship like the Trenton. Since the ship has come at a throw away price, it's logical to gain expertise on handling the ship, exploiting it and concurrently for the Indain ship yards that take ages to build ships some learn how to go about building such ships. So by the time, the Indian yards build ships and handover the same to the navy, the Indian Navy would be in a position to take over the new ship, dump Trenton and have years of expereince behind it in operating such ships by then. It really pains that a country that has the History of Making Ships as best as it can be has to take the old rusty Junks from thre Yanks. Can we not make a LST ? But then a countrey "Defacto Ruled by a Foriegner and Rubber stamped by a Semi-New Yorker" can only do this. Who Knows what more are we to get from these Bullies and the day will not be far away when we may have to take the Yanks Say-so to even take a wink. History knows that The Yanks have always betrayed You when you want them most. -- KOREA,VIETNAM,IRAN,IRAQ,ARABIAn Region and Now in Pakistan/Afghanistan. They are a Selfish lot. GOD SAVE INDIA !!

The USS Trenton is not an LST. This is why your "gov" doesn't want to give you a new ship. The USS Trenton is an LPD (Landing Platform Dock). If you do not know what you are buying then get out of the store. Further more 99% of America would sooner let all of the countries you listed including yours kill each other off meanwhile guarding our own boarders to keep people like you out. Don't blame all of America for the actions a government officals which most of the people do not like to begin with, including me. And yes I do vote but over here is not much different than other places "Have money will politic".

Maybe you need to educate yourself so you don't come across so ignorant. The Jalashva was an LPD not an LST. Two completely different classes of ships. And it wasn't a OLD RUSTY JUNK...your country seemed to see what YOU'RE to blind to see. For $48,000,000 U.S. your navy got a ship and 6 Sea King helos. When the ship left Norfolk in Aug of 07, she was very sea worthy and up to any task. The 'Yanks have always betrayed.'? You need to get your head outta your ass. What has YOUR country done to aid other around the world? You don't give a rat's ass about your OWN people, you keep them down because they're beneath you. We kept South Korea from falling to North Korea. How did we betray them? Vietnam was a fiasco brought on by our own inbred politicians. Those other backwards countries don't dserver our attention. We've done more in the past 100 years than your shit hole of a country has done in its whole history! You even let a piss ant island take over your whole country because you were too weak to kick their asses out! Pretty sad when a country as big as yours can't even build its own navy, then some inbred ass like you bad mouths the strongest country in the world! How pathetic you are! Go eat a cow!
It is a good think that we are getting ships from some one other than Russia even though they are Old. Best of luck from an ex naval sailor. K.B. Sajan

i wanted to go in the indian navy ...i am in the 10th n what further education should i take for going in the indian navy ?
IT WOULD BE BETTER IF WE WOULD BUILD SHIP IN INDIA ITSELF AT LOW COST, BEACUSE THESE US DUMP IS EXPENSIVE THEIR MIGHT BE HULL DAMAGE ALSO. WE SHOULD RELI ON INDIA MADE SHIPS ONLY NOT IMPORTED
You judge for yourself - also, will it be easier for US to keep further tabs on India ? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Trenton_(LPD-14)
Date Where Events June 28, 1971 off Guantanamo Bay, Cuba A steam valve in TRENTON's number two engine room ruptured, killing four sailors instantly and severely injuring six others. The injured men were "medevaced" first to Guantanamo Bay and thence to the burn ward of the Army Hospital at Fort Sam Houston, TX. There, two of the six subsequently died as a result of their injuries.
TRENTON returned to Guantanamo Bay for interim repairs and then made her way back to Norfolk on one engine, arriving on July 6, where repairs were completed at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. January 17, 1977 Barcelona, Spain An LCM-6 from TRENTON carrying marines and sailors from shore back to TRENTON and USS GUAM (LPH 9), collided with a merchant vessel which was entering the port of Barcelona. The LCM-6 capsized. 49 servicemen were killed in the accident. April 27, 1981 Alexandria, Egypt During a five-day port visit, the USS TRENTON and USS JACK (SSN 605) are slightly damaged when the JACK, moored alongside, surges against the TRENTON in a sea swell.
In away it is a good move as with the ship we got the drawings and training of manopower to operate such ship. Otherwise preparing of the drawings by our naval architects, though capable to design such vessels, wud take long time knowing the working culture of the PSUs. imrovising the drawings is much faster. Now the Indian Navy shud start developing the same for building the vessel they require for their fleet.
