Logically thinking and speaking one cannot dispute Mr. Bidwai on this issue. For states like India the choice is as clear as for a woman about to be raped- either fight back with every ounce of energy you have and hope and pray that the enemy could be overwhelmed OR lie back and enjoy the inevitable!! The invasion of Iraq and execution of Mr. Hussian was no war against WMD or terror it is nothing but the power greed of a few neocons in America for which many American soldiers and Iraqis have paid with their lives!!

You r absolutely right. Ther were WMD's and Chemical Weapons but the war went and even THE SO CALLED UNO did not utter a word and thousands of iraqis and americans soldiers r losing thier precious lives for the sake of Oil and gas business
This is in response to the article 'Saddam's hanging was illegal and vengeful.'Saddam was not a despot as Mr. Praful Bidwai would like all to believe. His reign developed Iraq into one of the most powerful nations in the middle east.Education was free, and so were most of the medical services.Income tax was nil,and business was booming.More over Iraq was the first middleast nation to adopt democracy.Saddam was an elected and a popular leader of the Iraqi people.
He did kill the Kurds and the Shiites, but only because they were creating trouble by demanding separate nationhood for their territories. Now any leader would do so to protect the integrity of his nation. It is his duty. And moreover,he did not kill the Kurds and Shiites indiscriminately. He killed only those Kurds and Shiites who were creating mischief. The Indian leaders too did it when the Sikhs led Bhindranwale wanted Punjab to be separated from the Union, and so it is the same now with Kashmir and the north-east.Saddam's forces didn't kill innocent civilians. But the Indian forces do so at the drop of a hat and they most gleefully rape the women from these regions. So when Saddam's forces were trianed and advised not to commit these heinous crimes, how can any one's conscience be so porous as to permit them to say that Saddam was a despot? If you want to know the meaning of despot just look at some of the African leaders;read the history of Khmer Rouge.hen you will realise that Saddam was not a despot. If you still say he was a despot, then every person who ruled or rules a nation is a despot.
Saddam's hanging didn't make him a hero.It only underlined the fact that he was a hero.It also brought out the fact that Saddam was feared by the US even when he was in prison.Well,so much for the only super power on earth!
To view the American crime broadly,Saddam or no Saddam,Bin Laden or no Bin Laden,9/11 or no 9/11,U.S would any way have attacked these countries,Iraq and Afghanistan, and it will attack its poodle Pakistan, and India too for various ridiculous reasons.Remember that not India was warned by Bush Sr and Bush Jr not too long ago.So then when this attack will happen, rest assured, we will have many Saddam Husseins and Bin Ladens fighting for our land. Then I would dare you to call them despots!
The aim of US is to rule over the world. So no one can be its friend. So it would be better for all the nations to unite and deploy forces against USA and England, and defeat the new imperialist ambitions of these 'rogue shadow of the devil'nations to protect the integrity of all the other nations of the world. This would be much better than calling the leaders of victimised nations falsely as despots, criminals and maniacs.

Same old blinded, generalized, biased opinion of yours regarding Indian forces in JK.
"...But the Indian forces do so at the drop of a hat and they most gleefully rape the women from these regions.."
Will you please get the facts about the Indian forces in JK and talk?

I liked this more than the original article.Mr.Suhail has given an insight of an insecure Iraqi leader trying to keep his flock together. As he has said any would of any country would ve done the same.Keep it up Mr.Suhail i look forward to some thinking messages like the one u posted.
I thank Mr.Bidwai for the informative topic.I am more dissapointed with the attitude of our Government of the day as well as other parties. If we accept unequivocally that Saddam was friend of India, why our reaction is so muted ? Actually we have followed double standard. An upright and noncompromising principle is accepted and regarded not the surrender policy we are following.Saddam perished but Head high above the neck, defying the invadors and enemy to his nation till last. This has made him commanding respect from many and given him martyrdom. I once again convey my Gratitude to Praful Bidwai for the write up. Dr.S.Mohanty,Bhubaneswar,Orissa
USA apologised to Iraq and the world. U.S and U.K. made allegations like "possession of weapons of mass destruction" by Iraq. They invaded with brute force captured Saddam and killed him.
How about live telecast of Bush's hanging? Yes, punishment is already decided. Now, the case, he is responsible for every thing bad going on earth (exaggerated..!!). Let's try him and hand over the punishment in a court just run by those who have been deprived of the same under his rule.

No right thinking, unbiased individuals can disagree to any of the points raised by Praful Bidwai. There are enough and more people who think on those lines. None of the points made by Bidwai can be disputed by honest and unbiased persons. Saddam could have been a demon in US's eyes. But he was never accused of siding with the Islamic militants. Iraq under him was the only Arab state which didn't allow fundamentalist groups like Alqeda to operate from its territory. Post Saddam you can see all sort of militants operating from Iraq.
Also it is pertinent to note that US was backing Saddam when the did all these "so called heinous crimes against humanity" because it suited US well at that point it time to support him. Who gave US the international Policeman's job??!!
