It is an open secret that the English language education in India has for centuries produced a brown sahib syndrome where the poor goons are brainwashed to look down on everything Indian as native junk, and worship writers who master English.
I have mastered English to the best possible extent though my mother tongue is Urdu and I am much more at home with Gujarati since my entire schooling was done in Gujarati. I am glad, nay, enthralled that this scenario which I hated in childhood has now left me in a very happy situation.
I transcreate Urdu and Gujarati poems directly into English, please note, I do not translate any poem. Most translations lose the flavour of the original and come out stiff and rigid as if produced by the anglophile bureaucracy that sustains our great country with its anarchy and chaos. I conceive an Urdu ghazal in English and then do an 'original' in English using free verse format. Many of my poems have been published at many writers' fora and in ezines abroad. I am writing a book on this art.
However I have clearly felt the discrimination at various Indian fora for writers where writers who write in English, whilst living in India, continue their English worship and avoid encouragement to regional language. This apathy has to change, we have to respect our culture first before becoming anglophiles mindlessly.
