by shaju joseph on Feb 21, 2007 09:58 AM  Permalink

I want to share the sufferings of those parents who lost their beloved children yesterday in that terrific tragedy. I know no words can console the parents and the dear ones of those died.

I think it is high time for the government to take stingent actions to protect the lives of people, especially of our children

school authorities need to be held responsible
by jyothi lobo on Feb 21, 2007 09:39 AM  Permalink

this has shaken me up! these days school authorities simply do not take the necessary precautions. last week my 8 year old daughter was given a format which read that we, parents, give consent to her to go for a school picnic to a resort with swimming pool and we will be responsible for her activities during the picnic. that was really shocking. why take them for picnic at all, if school cannot take responsibility of the kids during the picnic?

school authorities have to be made accountable for the loss of these angels.

may their soul rest in peace. amen.

Black day for all indian citizen
by k balamurugan vridhai on Feb 21, 2007 09:25 AM  Permalink

It is shocking news to loose so many little children. It is very sad situation.
1. kerala has lot of boat services. it is better to verify the status of boat and licence by govt authorities.
2. we people before getting in look for whether they are qualified or not. by hanging their copy of licence/certificates in the front.
3. excursion leaders should be well knowledgable, before entering into risky actions. since we parents send our kids to schools by believing on teachers. but what happens is., kubakonam fire, so many schools mischief of teacher, student and external parties against girl child, lot of death in goa beach during excursion, now thattakad.
pls put full stop for this.
teachers are highly respectable position with greater responsibility. the entire future of our nation is in your hands.
pls handle with more care.

by bhaskaran saseendrakumar on Feb 21, 2007 09:12 AM  Permalink

We are getting a lesson through this boat mishap.Five years back, I am remembering about another boat tragedy in Vembanadu lake. Now it is continuing. The government will take severe action in this regard. This will not be continued again. I pray the almighty to give peace for the reparted soul and give strength to the relatives to tolerate their loss.

Pathetic
by vinod chandran on Feb 21, 2007 08:53 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I was there almost one month back on the same boat. That boat was not up to standards. And too it was carrying almost 3 times of its capacity. Anyway Govt should take action against the driver and the officers who is supporting this type of activities. According to my knowledge this driver has got good connection with all the foreset officers there in tattekad.

Those drivers who take more & more people beyond the boats capacity to make money in one go should be booked with heavy penalties and in this case these drivers should be given life imprisonment but nothing can compensate the lives of little children.

Great misery
by b gar on Feb 21, 2007 08:02 AM  Permalink

When it comes to children, there should be a great concern for the safety, it would be wise to use life jacket and a safe licensed boat for this kind of excursion. there is nothing that can give comfort to the parents who lost their children. In India we have the attitude of not caring the safety of children, this attitude must be changed by giving strict instructions training and with great punishment who violates it, including government officials.

Young innocent souls losing lives is hard to believe in India with no fault of their. How could th Govt of Kerala let this happen. With so many technological advances happening , its pity that old fashioned manual boats still ply on our rivers with no lifeguards on board.

What is hitech got to do with such tragedies when we do not give any value to human life? Which software would have saved them when we break any rule set by the govt? Please do not come to a conclusion that only mechanisation can save humanity!!!

Yes Hitech has got to do lots:
1. Two boats held together by wooden planks- do you think that is the standard of a boat that should operate in 21st century Kerala, as it is today?
2. Absolutely no safety measures like life belts/ life jackets....to Keralites these are indeed hitech.
3. No briefing given prior to starting on the journey as to what to do in case of emergency.Sounds crap to us, but happens everywhere in the civilised world where human life cannot be trivialised with.
4. Using mordern communication facilities to summon urgent help when the problem was first noticed. Instead of trying to unload water from the boat with cupped hands, there should have been mechanisms in place to get urgent help, if any emergency arose.
5.Lack of courage or leadership on the part of teachers to pull off the journey when they realised that the boat was being overloaded. Instead they chose to go ahead heeding to the words of the boat owners. Should be a lesson for everyone not to be a party to breaking rules, big or small. If someone had the courage to protest and say "look this is not right, this is dangerous, I will not be a party to it", may be a few more would have stayed back.
He should be convinced that he is not a fool to think so even if the boat did not sink.
Finally, our lives are only worth as much as we believe it is. If we think it is worthwhile "enjoying"a 20 minute boat-ride on an over-crowded boat, in pitch-darkness, with no facilities what-so-ever in case of an emergency, nobody can really avert such a catastrophe.
There are things that we have to realise as free citiens of this country....that we are paying for the goods/services we get and that we have the right to question their safety/efficacy.That we have the right to complain if things are not done properly. That we can at least boycott things which are life threatening.
If visitors said we are not going for sight-seeing in 19th century boats, things will change, slowly but surely. After all such things are not indispensible, for daily living.

Ms Sandhya,

it is clear that you are out of your damn mind. it is because of shameless people like you that keralites have the reputation of being confused.

Typical reply from a Bangalore based 'Software Engineer'. The fact that the boat capsized doesn't have anything to do with it being an 'old fashioned manual boat' . If a boat is overloaded it will capsize whether its manual boat or some high-tech boat!! Anyway I don't see any mention of the boat being manual boat in this news.
