how did China come into the picture ? I call is China obsession, because Mr.Moon is S.Korean and no Chinese can be UN Sec. Gen. because of their non-democratic ways and poor human rights record. I ALWAYS PITY OF CHINA.

Plainly telling:
We want a permanent membership like China,
we deserved that. If that is not possible.
Then no UN should exist!!!

Well Chinese are the most likey who played spoiler in Sashi's election. It is pity why India keeps on harping friendship with China with nothing in return.
Chinese have not budged a inch on border issue.
They have already swallowed tibet and quickly over crowding with Chinese population (in contrast to India's conduct in Kashmir)
Arming pakistan to teeth and
Chinese ambassador openly claiming Indian territory sitting in India.
It is PITY TO SEE SPINE LESS indian leadership , and PITY on India.

We talk about the Red Card brother.
China have 1.3 b, we have 1.2b.
What a inequality world we are living.
We are in the mercy of them to give status
eventhough, we can change the face of the world.

Preventing loss of face
by Dadhikravas Belavkar on Feb 10, 2007 01:31 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Tharoor had China going against him right from the beginning.

Though in the initial rounds of the election, Tharoor was in the top three candidates, he never secured more support than Moon did.

This, and taking into consideration that a permanent member did not want Tharoor as the Secy Gen put the writing on the wall.

Comparisons between Tharoor and Kalam are bogus. Tharoor could be of great service in shaping India's foreign policy, and therefore a position in the MEA would make more sense than the Presidential post. Kalam was definitely Presidential material, and people who think otherwise should just compare the pervasiveness of his stature as President in the Indian psyche as compared to that of his predecessors, and they will get their answer.

It was likely that US has opposed Tharoo's candidature. One major power had opposed.US wanted only its candidate(Ban from S korea, who isconsidered close to the US) to win and there was no way for them without opposing Tharoor as He was in a v good position. Us may seem to be friendly with India. But in critical situations, it has laways ditched India.Same is true with China. We cant expect it also to be that way beocs they are always afraid of India;s growing status.Only RUSSIA is a true supporter on India at all times.

Shashi Tharoor%u2019s resignation
by Bipin K Rokade on Feb 10, 2007 01:29 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

This resignation indicates that India should have to be develop its economic and scientific powers in the world. His unsuccessful contest indirectly reflects the India%u2019s power in the world. Does our 9% growth rate digest this resign and unsuccessful contest? This is the lesson for us that teach us where and how quickly we should develop and I think this is the duty of every citizen to make a country superpower in every sector as early as possible.

Obviously, the person is perfect but the power behind is little bit less for which we have to be grow more rapidly instead of satisfying on current growth rate. Countries economic and scientific powers always matters in world politics.

UNSC Seat
by R Singh on Feb 10, 2007 01:13 AM  Permalink

India has done a stupendous job in supporting UN efforts in peace keeing efforts throughout the world. No other nation has done so much (relative to their resources) as India. But when it comes to getting a seat in UNSC for a country that has one-fifth of world's humanity, everyone (specially China, our friends in the West etc) have not fully supported our cause. It's a realistic world, other than begging to get a permanent seat, India should create its own sphere of influence and leverage its growing econimic might to extract concessions from other countries and safeguard its interests in Asia and beyond.

Hope you will be taking any assignment if offered by Indian government
by rahul on Feb 10, 2007 01:02 AM  Permalink

Dear Mr.Tharoor,

No need for any remorse. You have done a great job in UN. And now days when UN is getting more and more getting controlled by a group countries, it is best to leave that organization.

I am happy that you lost for the post of Secretary general. I don%u2019t know why in the first place you considered it worth of contesting.

It is puppet job and you surely do deserve better in life.

You have made our country proud without being partial.

Hope you will be taking any assignment if offered by Indian government. Specially India is going to become the 2nd largest economy ahead of even US. So holding an important position in India is more valued than the puppet job of Secretary general.

All the best for you in future.

UNSC seat gone?
by vinod nair on Feb 10, 2007 12:20 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I think India could have used a high ranking personnel at the UN for its bid for a Permanent seat. Now, with Shashi gone the task may have just gone steeper.

Don't worry brother. UNSC expansion is inevitable based on current scenario.
Of course, if we have high ranking people,
it would be better, but it won't be a problem.
But I pity for India, with such large population
how India treated in the world.
