very hurt
by on Feb 06, 2007 07:31 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I like any other kannadigas is badly hurt at the decision and I sincerely hope that the tribunal order has nothing to do with the TN or UPA arm twisting or influencing tactics but it is very tough to beleive otherwise so. One my close advocate friend said which I quote is "it is like dividing your property; Assume you have two sond and the first son has two children and the second son has five chidlren and you give more share to teh second son just because he has more children - looks logically right but in reality absurd.

Also I hope someone knows the effect of Bangalore on Indian economy (mr PC and MR PM are you listening) and the effect of this order on Bangalore Economy and in turn the Indian economy and I hope someone reserves some tmc for Bangalore also from the overall tmc sharing.

The order has made everyone in Karnataka very sad and frustrated :-( Somehow we are losing the confidence in the whole setup of this Indian union

Guru - the frustrated

Guru,
While politics can never be ruled out, one should also consider the fact that the final judgement was so close to the interim judgement leads me to believe that this is fundamentally a techinical/legal decision.
And even though people seem to think that this judgement went for TN, I would like to point out that TN's share is in fact lower than what it was under the old colonial agreement. Karnataka's share almost doubled. The trouble is not the award, but the expectation. Clearly Karnataka considers everything about the old agreement completely unfair and feels that it has the right to use every drop of water that falls on its state. While there is some legal basis for this argument, there is definitely no humanitarian basis for this argument. Turning TN into a desert (Cauvery is the only major river in the state) would be devastating not only for TN, but also for KA and the rest of India.
If we can agree that some water needs to be released by KA, then it only becomes a question of numbers. Should it be 192 Tmcft or should it be lower? I hope the CMs can meet and work this out instead of playing politics. It is time India grew up.

Your city has grown not just because of Kannadighas. In fact there is a great contribution from non-kanna which is why this growth. It is only because of lack of trained kannadighas that all MNCs recruit people from elsewhere and your city's growth is directly linked to the success of the business which is highly driven by non-kann. Just calling yourself Kannadigha, your city will not grow. You pls direct your email to Infosys, wipro, who are kannadighas to recruit only Kannadighas and see how long they survive, may be few days. Then you have to go back to your tribal days. remember. If you still want non-kannadighas to go out of karnataka, issue a same warning to all kanndighas outside Karnataka to pack-up and return home for "good" (???). Listen, a society open to all irrespective of case, creed, race only will grow. Don't dig your own grave. Jai Hind.

cauvery issue
by ranji deroose on Feb 06, 2007 05:12 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

i would say that this time the court has come out with a fair verdict and has really favoured the needy. i had myself attended many a court session during my one year working in the kerala cauvery cell and know much more details than any other layman or even a minister about the actual facts of the case. i personally feel that this long year case was a great success and benefit to all those advocates involved rather than benefit to any of the states and advice not to go further for any review and satisfy with whats available.

petty tribalism
by on Feb 06, 2007 04:22 AM  Permalink

Why dont we just stop all these tribal identifications and be human beings! that will be difficult for most because then they would have to take responsibilty for each person they meet on the street no matter where he is from, which language he speaks and how much money he has...guys, stop being so selfcentred, tribe-centred, caste-centred, nation-centred....let us end all the divisions in the world and for that begin with ourselves...

Stay calm - Unity is our strength
by srini vasan on Feb 06, 2007 04:04 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Gentlemen, some of the messages only exposes the hatred that we have in store and venting it out during such political decisions. Every culture, language and place has its own merits and demerits. Let all of us (all dravidian states) together understand the reality and do justice to our farmers at both ends. Water wastage do not start in ending up in sea, but right from our wash basin. Let us abide by the law and stand an example. Stop the rhetoric that would disintegrate india. Unity is our strength. SRINI.

Sandeep,
As per the tribunal's award, TN is getting less than it has asked, as also less than what it has historically received.
So this is a "victory" for TN and "defeat" for KA only insofar as expectations are concerned. While TN is desperate after years of KA's refusal to honor interim as well as Supreme court awards, KA has maintained a maximalist position that basically said TN is not entitled to a single drop of water that falls on KA.
This is obviously a political position with no thought to reality. Cauvery is the only major river that runs through TN. If it is turned off, TN will turn into a desert within one generation. India being a free country, where do you think those poor desperate starting people are going to migrate to?

You or I do not know how much water each State needs.. There has been a team formed which did a lot of analysis and has come up with this verdict... There is no point in you or I debating on this topic of which we have the least knowledge...

verdict on cauvery
by Jawahar Paulraj on Feb 06, 2007 12:14 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

It is a healthy sign to share the limited cauvery water resource by the four states. The states have to take initiative to effectively utilise the water. Hope my fellow friends from Karnataka will abide by the verdict.

in the past 25 years only twice water has reached the sea. Why? Last year KN did not release water in summer, instead it allowed all the dams to overflow during peak monsoon and then released water, causing flooding in Srirangam. Ofcourse the water had to go to the sea. Which is why the tribunal order makes sense- periodic release not sudden off-loading!
