The Tamils in SL, most enlightened Indians and international opinion are familiar with outrageous propaganda claims of the Sri Lankan authorities. (an interesting iconic hoax was narrated by SL ambassador to US to the Washington Post Radio last year) about the theft and sale of 130000 Norwegian passports by the LTTE to the Al Qaeda for millions of dollars). Now The SL army chief (Sarath Fonseka) claims 'Ltte will be defeated by year-end'. In justification he claims that his target is to kill about 20 LTTEs daily or about 500 a month. What a civil act to boast about though he may be a military man! The joke in international circles is that, by now given the killings as reported by the SL government there would be no Tamils left in Sri Lanka.
How about the human cost on the government side?. Fonseka's track record gives an interesting insight on the credibility of his claims.
This general was in the forefront of action in the 1990/2000. In May 2000 the army hierarchy placed the plight of the SL soldiers in such jeopardy that SL pleaded with India to rescue nearly 40000 soldiers who were close to being captured by ..Ltte' (please see Neil Devotta 'Is India over-extended? I am not a Tamil person and I really did not know what Tamils are except that they are from Madras area. This was my understanding of them until late 1970's. My eye was opened during my visit to Colombo in 1970's when I was mistakenly identified as sinhalese by a Tamil groups when I visited a restaurant in heavily Tamil portion of the Colombo. Based on my skin color, height, and facial features I was mistaken as being sinhalese and manger of the restaurant asked me why I decide to have south indian food in a Tamil portion of the colombo. Even after knowing that I was Indian they had hard time to understand why I looked like a sinhalese. In my mind I still believe that they never really accepted that I was Indian but did not object to my having a very nice Masala Dhosa there. So I know that there was deep distrust between two communities even in 1970's. Unfortunately my simple recent message about political issue with LTTE adversity was removed as abusive. I do not know why? I talked about mistake of LTTE to go in negotiation with Sinhalese thorough western intermediary. They- LTTE commanders - should have seen what happened to Jonas Sowambi - Angolan leader who was assassinated after he agreed to negotiate peace with Angolan Govt. through same group of intermediary states. Thats a but strange most Sri Lankan Tamils and Sinhalses are very similar looking. The upper caste Kandyan Sinhlases are very light skinned but they are actullay the Tamil Nayakas. All Sinhala arsitocrats are basically south Indian Tamils. Many Sinhlese eat South Indian food and frequent South Indian restraunts run by Tamils of Indian origin. So they will not be suprised that you are SInhalese eatng in a Tamil restraunt. Usually these restraunts have their regular cutomers bothe Tamils and Sinhalese, and when a new person comes to eat there are bit inquisitive ad will question yo in a friendly manner, they would have presumed that you were a Sinhalese as you woul dnot have spoken to them in Tamil as a Tamilian would have done. Your looks ahve nothing to with it as there aare many tall and very light skinned Tamils both Srilankan and Indian but they would interacted with the waiters in Tamil and when the waiter kenw that you did not understand Tamil he would have adressed you in Sinhala too and you would not have understood the chances are that not knowing any English he would not have known what to tdo with you and would have called the manager. The manager and the staff knew that you were neither Tamil nor SInhala that is why the manager spoke to you in English.andknew you were not a SOuth Indian that is why he was curious about you liking South Indian food
The NAZI general bluffs that LTTE is just 3000 strong group. The entire North western Coastal area of Chilaw and Puttalm was Tamil. The Sri Lankan governemtn and the Sinhala Catholic church of the south ( as these areas were not given under the Jusrisdiction of the Tamil Catholic church of the NOrth East as it rightfully should have been done) forcibly converted all these poor Catholic Tamil fisher familise overnight in to Sinhlalas. All Tamil schools around 1000 of them in these areas were converted to Sinhala overnight.These 250000 people ( inthe 1950s census)were counted as Sinhalas and not as Tamils anymore.I remember going to these areas and you wil find the grand parents speaking only Tamil and calling themselves Tamils . The children bi lingual and calling themselves Sinhalas at times Tamils and the grand children only speaking Sinhala and calling themselves Sinhalese. Sinhlala Buddhist very soon. This accelarted Sinhlassation started in the late 70 80s and now has has been made a priority. Already around 500000 Eelam Tamils hve ben made homeless and have been chased out of their lands in the last year by the Rajapakse GOvernment. These people will never be able to go back to their lands.MOst of these lans wil be given to the new Sinhla settlers fron the South and these Tamils like the Palesteninas will be forever miserable refugees thanks to Karuna and the western intersts and to India too. Many Tamil village names in the so called liberated east have now been chaged to Sinhala names and the army is frightening the Tamils to use these names. The SInhla politicinas have already started their Geobles like campaing in the local media stating the Eastern Tamils are actually SInhalas who were Tamilised by the Vellalar Northern Tamils and the Cholas and Pandyans. THey seem to be finding Sinhlaa meaning to every Tamil name ion the east. convenniently forgettingthe fact that Sinhla is aorund 40 to 50% old Tamil and the root names for places in all Srilanka is old Tamil. TO this effect 19 ancient Tamil villages in the border of Mullaitivu and Trincomalle were ethnically cleansed all Tamils from the Brahmins to the Dalits had to leave any vestiges of the Tamil and Hinduism was detroyed here. Many mass graves of Tamils were found. There was an outcry in Australia, when he was appointed as the High Commissioner. Televsion channels broadcast the atrocities in the North of SriLanka and the mass graves of Tamils found in Jaffna. He was allowed to take his postion during John Howard's government as the Howard governmet was a firm ally of the USA (which openly supports the Sri Lankan government). By defeating the LTTE the Sri lankan government is not going to grant or solve the Tamil problem. People here do not know the Sinhala mind thoer hatred for anythnig Indian or Hindu. Although the overwhelming majority of Sinhalas are of Tamil and to some extent Norht Indian blood, they hate the Tamil th eIndiannad Hiduism with vengeance, they go out of their way to make friends with India's enemies,once they use India to destroy the Sri Lankan Tamils they will discard India as they have always done.
