In India there is a competition to become backward and remain backward and the politicians support these because of their appeasement policies and vote bank politics. SHAME SHAME.
Every caste in India including Muslims and Christians want to be included in the reservation category.Even Ministers who roam around in air conditioned cars have reservations and want the reservations to be extended to thier sons and daughters for n number of generations. The government gives handouts and honest hardworking taxpayer has to pay out of his pocket to fund these nonsensical schemes. This creates large scale discontentment among the public. Why should certain section of the society benefit when everybody is paying equal taxes. This is bound to create social tensions which would plunge the country into chaos and unstability.Reservations should be done away with as soon as possible as they have no place in modern India and are a complete and utter failure.

let everyone havee quota.... there would be no problem.... at all .... its like beginning of new kind of communism ....
I think the entire reservation system should be scrapped. This only encourages Caste divides. The Govt should instead allocate funds from the Fed Budget to be invested for development, education, health care etc.

Lagata hai tera pakistan jane ka time aa gaya hai...aisa bahar phenkege ki idhar ki yaad bhi nahin ayegi.
Why is that ST status should not be given to Gujjars. More castes should be included into the BC, OBC, MBC, SC/ST quota. That way there will be good competetion and some merit will comeup even thru the quota's.

Reddy garu, Can we propose like this,as below? All the castes and religions should be given reservation based on their percentge. No general catagory at all!! It works like this. Hindus: (say)70% (70% divided by all casts of Hindus) mus: 16% (15% devided by shiyas, sunnis etc) Chris: 4% (3% devided by RC, Prot,7day..etc) Sikhs:4% (entirely for Sardarji's!) Jains: 2% (all internal casts incl) Budd: 3% (all internal casts incl) parsi/any other religions : rest
So that no one will strike for their quota.
But...I know, Before Any govt/Polititions agree, You people in this discussion board will never agree. Therefore that India will never be Cast/Reservation free!!
India is a 'democracy' and NOT 'meritocracy' like Singapore.
Hence it is imperative to appreciate 'diversity' in Legislature,Judiciary and Administration.
1. 50% of MPs,MLAs,Judges,IAS Officers etc should be from OBC. 2. 35% MPs,MLAs,Judges,IAS Officers etc should be Dalits and Tribals. 3. Remaining MPs,MLAs,Judges,IAS Officers etc should be from other castes.
This will prevent 'casteism' and socio-economic 'collusion' in India..

Why not have seperated country for each category that you mentioned???That way each group can have 100% reservation in their own land.

No sir... they are already over that. Most of them are SC,STs and OBCs. esp in UP, Bihar and Rajasthan
The lopsided caste-based Reservations are the root cause of the ruckus where vote banks and vote power politics ruled the day.
Those -- Tribals and Wannabe Tribals -- both of whom, according to their websites -- Meena Samaj website and also the Gurjjar Community Site -- are prosperous communities, who have already broken the law earlier; inhumanly hurt their Indians and their livelihoods; damaged private and public property (in late May and June this year) for their own selfish reasons. They must be punished severely. Preventive Detention of all their leaders -- both of Meenas and Gujjars, in one stinky 'kothri' . That would be, and should be, the most civil thing to do now before they get out-of-hand again.
Put them behind bars. Now.
They have done no good and much harm to private and public property earlier. Any one who expects it will be a peaceful stir are wrong...and sadly mistaken.
This spark can ignite the country again ! The law of the land should be enforced vigorously !!
Please Rediff, the public debates here are too often obsessed with the bogeymen of the past. I urge you to work with all the powers at your command to evolve the much-needed consensus. Sixty years have already been WASTED BY VESTED INTERESTS. Fifty years ago the divide-and-rule policies should have been reviewed and purged out of our democratic system on grounds of social justice.
Fifty years ago the divide-and-rule policies should have been reviewed and purged out of our democratic system on grounds of social justice. That would have been true "affirmative action" on this sub-continent; not the gobbledygook that Arjun Singh and others have been touting.
For far too long we have allowed our 'leaders' to herd the masses via reservations based on religion and caste-based political trickery.
The 'leaders' have got away scot-free after sparking hatred between communities while the burning issues of poverty alleviation and bigger better opportunities for ALL who really need affirmative upliftment, have been relegated to the road side as vote-banks.
Sometime back one of our Supreme Court Judges had gone on record, saying: "Nowhere else in the world do castes, classes or communities queue up for the sake of gaining backward status. Nowhere else in the world is there competition to assert backwardness and then to claim we are more backward than you....the creamy layer rule is a necessary bargain between the competing ends of caste based reservations and the principle of secularism."
Strike while the iron is hot, Rediff. Rise and Shine.
Progress will be real when only the 'really marginalised, truly needy' people are given the opportunities for upliftment. Peace may then just about return.

Hi DARA,
I totally agree with you. The funny part of this happenings is that now EVERYONE wants to be get into ST/SC categories, whereas it was a taboo way back in India.

Considering that everyone wants to be either in OBC or SC/ST category, these categories should be called elite ones. Since these are elite categories, they dont need reservation any more!
