The leadership of Muslim League was held by (Mohajir) millionaires like Jinnah, Liaqat Ali Khan who had massive properties in Hindu dominated areas. Hence, they feared loss of power once India got free. Also, in Punjab and Sindh although Muslims were in majority, more than 70% property was owned by Hindus and Sikhs, which created a state of constant tension.

The entire middle class of Muslims migrated to Pakistan from India, and this created a huge vaccum (MJ Akbar). Poor Muslims were left behind, who were too poor or illiterate to understand partition or buy a rail ticket to Karachi. And since then, Muslims are struggling to create a middle class in India.

The idea was to drive out Hindus and Sikhs from Punjab and Sindh, so that massive lands could be given back to mohajirs (refugees) from areas such as UP, Bihar, Hyderabad, Eastern Punjab, etc.
