BJP is the best hope in Indian politics.
by Mahesh on Aug 31, 2007 08:13 AM  Permalink

BJP is the best part for the country. Nuclear deal is the first good thing the Congress has done or trying to do for this country in their rule of 50 odd years. On the other hand there are so many things that Congress did post Independence that almost destroyed the country. I hope this N-deal would not whitewash their sordid history. Even now there is no guaranty that this deal will be concluded effectively with negotiations at the IAEA meet. It might be possible that the deal will face slow death as their allies the Communists are against it.

Good for rethinking!
by Basant Maheshwari on Aug 31, 2007 08:09 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Congratulations to BJP for a rethinking on 123 Agreement. It really makes no difference whatever may be Party's earlier decision maybe, what matters is that one should have the courage to rethink and do for the country's interest.
Please don't get disappointed by adverse comments on your bold action. This bold decision vindicate that democracy in India is alive and thriving.
In my opinion BJP party has a bright future, the leadership has to be more assertive and also sideline the unreasonable elements in the party.
The midterm elections will take place before June 2008 so you must start identifying good candidates ,do not sacrifice candidates with good public image for a "winnable" anti-social and unworthy candidates.
Can BJP prove that it is a party with a difference by ensuring no candidate having criminal mcharges finds his/her name in the list in the next general election?

Who gives a DAMN about the BJP. Its the Congress and its wise leaders who made the deal happen just like the fact they started the open market policy in India in the early 90's. BJP is just a COPY CAT.
If they run out of fresh ideas i am sure they will find another disputed religious site to create diversion and communal hatred. There entire thought process is based on dividing Indians based on religion. It will NEVER WORK !

Opportunistic Party
by Ashutosh Kole on Aug 31, 2007 06:18 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Wow, what a turn around; a full 180 degree. This is only possible with the BJP. And the author Amulya Ganguli has smartly covered the fact that the BJP is a very opportunistic party and all what it says is purely for personal gains, leave aside the national interest. And now, with this article, and the responses to it by all the 'middle class BJP supporters' or rather 'Left haters' are having a time of rejoice. What a scoundrel the BJP is. How can one oppose a decision whole heartedly till yesterday and today all of a sudden, come in support of it? Even more disappointing is the understanding of the responser's that Left is anti national and the only patriotic people left in India are Advani and Co. Its not surprising though to see that these are the same people responding in every anti left article featured on Rediff. All these people want India to be a territory of America.

All parties are opportunistic. With the tables turned, Congress would do the same.

The lesson the BJP learned here is you don't blindly oppose anything the party in power does. Hopefully this lesson has made the BJP "grow up". Kind of like accusing Pakistan without thinking... which ironically allowed Pakistan to dodge blame. The BJP grew up and doesn't do that any more (mostly!).

If a party realizes that it's stand incorrect and incorrect and changes, then it becomes opportunistic? Those that stick to their stand like a rock are in fact having a rock in the place of their brain or worse have no brain and can't think

BJP and its flip flop
by Loan Shark on Aug 31, 2007 05:42 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

When will BJP learn to take a stand? This party of dissidents and indisciplined has never had a political strategy. Now they find themselves cornered as public opinion is moving in favor of the nuclear deal.

Upper caste hindus, who have traditionally been their vote banks, despite Advani's desperation to woo muslims, are favoring the nuclear deal with US. Even businesses want the nuclear deal to go ahead.

So, who is opposed? the Leftist and so BJP is put in the same camp as the leftists - the headless chickens.

It took them long to realise the political blunder that BJP is doing by opposing the nuclear deal. Congress has stolen BJP's economic strategy by hiring Manmohan Singh. Now BJP neither has a policy not a stand that they can call their own.

by Sam on Aug 31, 2007 04:45 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

By not discussing with the bjp, congress is making the biggest mistake.

bjp is only asking to change the indian law slightly to act as a balance againt the hyde law.

by ignoring the bjp, due to sonia europeanji, congress is doing a harm to the country.

evryone knows that lefts interest is only with china.

even once they didnt oppose chinas help to pakistan

BJP will ultimately eat its words ... Don't underestimate Sonia's political and leadership skills .. she will delay the deal and make BJP the scapegoat for the delay ... public opinion will go in congress' favor and BJP will be left with the blame.

nuke deal
by sri on Aug 31, 2007 04:10 AM  Permalink

Amylya Ganguli is more mature in this analysis than ever before. He is not the blindly anti-BJP, pro-left that he used to be. This kind of more centrist position, many Indians including myself can live with and accept.

What are the cons?

What would be the worst case scenario for India if USA tricks us?

Since Rediff users are so well informed about this deal, could you please post the worst case scenario here:

they would take back all the nuclear materials and equipments.

we will be left short of power, for lots of industries would have developed by then, depending on the power generated by nuclear plants.

however this is unlikely, since US and European nuclear companies would not want to lose their investment in the indian nuclear sector.

at the end of the day its not politics, but money that decides the game.

Left in Kerala
by Mathew Mathews on Aug 31, 2007 02:56 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Left is an evil neccessity. We need some one from the right and the left sitting in parliment mouthing outdated ideologies so that we can know that such people existed. Even though I come from one of the communist ruled states, there are still people who vote for communists to bring them to power not because they are good but sad to say congress manages to shoot itself in the head/self destruct each time they form a ministry. This is a prime example of having literacy but no moolah in the head.

Don't try to abuse national priorities for political gains
by Virgo on Aug 31, 2007 02:11 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

BJP, if they really care about Indian national interests, should stop this charade and come out strongly in support of the US-India nuclear deal. In reality, there is a lot more at stake than just the nuclear aspect.

The big picture is the American support for Indian geopolitical goals and problems. Let's face it, China and Pakistan are sworn enemies of India. Without American support, the Chinese and the Pakis will double their efforts to destabilize India.

All Indians who care about the national interests of India should chase the commies and leftists into the bay of Bengal. Indians should get rid of these traitors.

Congress is in government, and government run by majority. If government can not sign a deal by its own than clearly that government do not have people's mandate and must go.
