The writer has contradicted himself - While running down the Left Parties, he contended that "... the remaining steps like negotiations with the International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA, and the Nuclear Suppliers Group, NSG, were a mere formality", but in the very next para he says ..."negotiations on an India-specific safeguards agreement with the IAEA Governing Board and talks with members of the NSG to seek an exception for India are likely to be long and hazardous".

Vernuri, Read the whole sentences. The author has not contradicted himself.

Thanks rediff for this informative, well written and very explanatory article by Ambassador Sreenivasan. Catch 22 is glaringly obvious. Much will depend on the negotiating skills of our bureaucrats in the days to come and much will depend on the absence of politicians aggravating the process. Irrespective of the outcome, the NSG member states will come closer to recognising that India is ripe to be accomodated into main stream nuclear fraternity after addressing our security concerns. At the same time India will also get closer to serious negotiations in plugging of the security loops which prevent us from accepting NPT in its present form. NPT needs to succeed accommodating security concerns of all countries. A first step towards total phased eradication of nuclear weapons which hangs as a sword over the planet. There have been 5 recognised incidences which were close-calls in having an all out nuclear exchange during the cold war era. We seriously need to remove human beings ability of destroying the planet, given the unpredictability factor of the species.
You have got to ACT like one. You cannot be standing in the same size shoes. As you grow older and get bigger and stronger You have got to show the world that you have arrived.
DESIRING to cooperate extensively in the full development and use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes as a means of achieving energy security, on a stable, reliable and predictable basis;
WISHING to develop such cooperation on the basis of mutual respect for sovereignty, non-interference in each other's internal affairs, equality, mutual benefit, reciprocity and with due respect for each other's nuclear programmes;
DESIRING to establish the necessary legal framework and basis for cooperation concerning peaceful uses of nuclear energy;
AFFIRMING that cooperation under this Agreement is between two States possessing advanced nuclear technology, both Parties having the same benefits and advantages, both committed to preventing WMD proliferation; ------------------------------------------ All the above clauses will help speed our research on thorium breeder reactor technology.
Once we perfect Thorium Breeder reactors. Guess who will come looking for us ?
Ans: The whole world because we can export both the technology as well as the raw material thorium. At least we can add thorium to our list of exports. If Uranium is costly. Then we can price thorium around the same price. This means more ka-ching in our coffers.
This will also bring us closer to Australia Another Democracy.
Just like USA is the dumping ground for chinese Manufactured goods. We in India should be the manufacturig hub which can tap the Australia =NewZealand market before the chinese get their dirty h

stupid swedes and norwegians could be real stubborn like mules. Ireland can be handled easily. May be India can gice them some business incentives.
(a) Some Nuclear Suppliers Group members getting supplies, but still called as Suppliers. (b) Some Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty members proliferate very much, but they are under NPT. (c) Nuclear Weapon State is an one sided & old concept w/o considering current situations.
India with its clean records of non-proliferation, even with these isolation thru sanctions, we showed the world that we are clean. We expect rewards from the world.
