An open debate on N-deal won't hur India
by Gowravaram Muralidhar on Aug 20, 2007 02:49 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I firmly belive that national interest should come first instead of Individual prestige, who ever it might be. If our political class or the adminstrative class involved in drafting such an agreement has over looked certain issues and differ, then they should refer it to the nation to decide as to whether we can go ahead with the deal in its present form or not. Let us understand that we as a nation has with stood so much of difficult times and will do so even if the treaty gets delayed or not operationalised. No treaty can be advantageous to any side of the treaty signing nations. If the national law of USA has the power to override the treaty, then our nation should also enact such national laws that would safe guard our national interest. Only then should we think of going ahead with the treaty. One better way is put the bill for voting in the parliament. If everything is fair in the treaty and no scope for chance has been taken then the government should voluntarily call for voting on the bill which should preceed with a discussion on the issue. I am of the opinion that most of our politicians except a few have no knowledge nor capacity to understand this agreement drafted by a few people. Let us not act like a banana republic. Have faith in the character of the nation. The nation can withstand any sort of sanctions or otherwise that may befall India. The world needs INDIA today and not the otherway round. If the government has to go due to this, let it go.

Absolutely logical views you expressed. USA debated this deal in their senate almost exhaustively while our Parliament come to see its draft only now at the time of signing.

Why do we need it (123 Agreement) now? We were fine all these years without it.

Just Because Dr. Singh is offered US citizenship They expect to dump 123 Agreement on India in return? Do we need to consider it?

Does US have credibility that it teaches us what is creditability.

They can sign a short term 2 years agreement Till the government is in power and let the next government decide what it has to do with 123 Agreement.

I dont understand why congress peruse such Controversial issues during the flag end of the tennure in the government.

Earlier it was Borfos the (rusted Guns) for which Rajiv Gandhi took money and now its 123 Agreement

It is said to address future energy needs of India. However exact economy of Nucear power is yet to be revealed. It seems that nuclear energy will be costly atleast for initial 10-15 years. Successor govt can always cancel the deal but that would cost a huge amount of financial damage to our country. The negotiations on this deal are on for last 3 yrears or so but govt never bothered to debate it in Parliament nor it revealed all the salient features.

in his own words MR BK says us has sofisticated polical system (and india doesn't). When the american system it self easily meddled with by the chinese ($900 trillion reserves) and massive american market is "subsidized" by the chinese so that they can control the Americans, what in the world india can benefit by "understanding and trusting" Chinese. show us one country that has progressed by developing such a relationship.

RE:BJP and NDA were much afraid of George Bush. So they did not unlock the reality to remove George Fernandes' trouser at American Airport when he was a minister.

do you think this is relevant here or you posting just for the sake of your mental satisfaction of BJP bashing? Do you have anything constructive for or against this particular nuclear deal?

People know today about the nuclear deal because the increased strength of the Left. They atleast stayed it for a public debate. BJP liked US to be a natural ally.

You are wrong and acting as a mouth piece of political parties. BJP was against this deal right from the begining while left kept mum for all these 3 years when UPA govt was discussing the deal with USA. Being a supportive party to the govt it was their duty to raise their concern earlier. This time also, it was Arun Shourie who requested the permission of privilage motion against PM and therefore this issue came into lime-light. As usual due to high-nuisance value and good relation with communist minded media, left got center stage.

There is a tirukural (in Tamil) epporul yaryar vai ketpinum .... Arivu) that is whoever tells anyhting study that and find out any subject in it. Study what the left says find any truth in it and then decide No harm will come in by giving it a good study do not reject merely bcos the opposition says.Remember they are oppositon parties and not opposing parties as long as they have the nation in their interest.
