Australia - a big joker
by rajesh on Aug 16, 2007 05:20 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The Aussi PM John Howard is an idiot of first rate -
He imposed sanction when India conducted Nuclear Test thinking that India will fall on his feet pleading for mercy!! India simply ingonred the idiots. When he came to India later he was humiliated by the Vajapayee govt. and understood that the idiots do not really matter to India much!! Now, since Australia has a huge reserves of Uranium and we want it from them, he is upping his ante and asking us not to conduct test. Simply ignore them, they will come back to us - its money, afterall...

We should not negotiate with cheats like Howard, we should instead plead the case of humiliated aboriginal community and get Howard sent to prison.

Indo US nuclear deal
by SS Kumar on Aug 16, 2007 05:02 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The Americans are past masters in the art of double speak and the Indian Govt. is already seeing example of this. They lull you into a false sense of complacency and then pull the rug from under your feet with a fine print exclu- sively favouring them. I fully support Karat when he advises caution to Dr. Singh in rushing in to sign this agreement, with a lame duck US President. The behaviour of Australia is already an indication of the shape of things to come. India should not fritter away its independence of decision making, under any circumstances. It would be a shame if it did. SS Kumar

Thorium
by salim das on Aug 16, 2007 04:59 PM  Permalink

Thorium, one of the %u201Crare earth metals,%u201D is an alternative to uranium as fuel for the construction of nuclear reactors designed for the purpose of producing electricity.

Thorium was, in fact, tested for this purpose at the very beginning of the design of nuclear power plants for generating electricity for powering submarines. It was used in the fuel for the world%u2019s first land sited nuclear power plant located at Shippingport, Pennsylvania. That first plant was built under the aegis of the %u201CAtoms for Peace%u201D program championed by then President Eisenhower.

Thorium
by salim das on Aug 16, 2007 04:58 PM  Permalink

Thorium has been determined to be three to four times more abundant than uranium in nature. The world%u2019s total economically extractable reserves have been recently estimated at 1,200,000 tonnes (metric tonne units). Australia with 300,000 tonnes of reserves, leads the world in this category, followed by India (290,000 tonnes), Norway (170,000 tonnes), the U.S. (160,000 tonnes), Canada (100,000 tonnes), South Africa (35,000 tonnes) and Brazil (16,000 tonnes), with all others totalling 95,000 tonnes.
