The scientific community is waiting...
by sudhakar ram on Aug 16, 2007 08:14 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Our scientists definitely want this deal...
Just look at our defence organizations DRDO,HAL, etc... None of them have capable people who can think. Coz whether they do something or not, nobody can remove them!and their brains have been rusted decades ago.
A freind of mine who worked with DRDO for 2 years says that only 1-2% is original rest all is copy-paste..

In such a scenario, they will be just waiting in their wings for American support to get equipment.

I am sure if this deal gets through, within a few years we'll see lots of things done by our nuclear scientists (basically US work with Made In India labelled on them beneath the tri-colour)

Why the deal should be scrapped?
by Kaushik Basu on Aug 16, 2007 08:02 PM  Permalink

As far as N-testing is concerned, anyway if India has to do N-test, it would most certainly be imposed with sanctions with or without deal. So I think India should go ahead with the deal because either way if they test they would not be getting the benefit, alternatively if they sign the deal they can start to get the fruits till the time it is compelled to do N-Tests.

Any how I still don't understand why do we need to go ahead with N-Testing in the current situation? And I seriously don't think that any testing would be taking place in the near future.

Also I seriously doubt how many of you have studied the deal and commenting on that. If you want to know what is signed please go to the following URL

This is the US version. The problem is we tend to become too sentimental when someone says that somebody is compromising with security, we tend to believe that it is true even without validating it.

What India can do
by purna on Aug 16, 2007 07:30 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

There are 5 nuclear weapon states (US, Russia, UK, China and France) and close to 190 countries (including Japan and Australia) have signed NPT; some of them are enjoying the benefits of civil nuclear development. India, Pakistan and Israel have not signed NPT. Pakistan will never sign till India does.

No nuclear or NPT country will help India or do business in the nuclear area. Israel is in a different category as it is surrounded by enemies and has to fight for its survival. This agreement is a way out for India to get nuclear supplies for civil and energy use; even countries like Australia and France will help India if the deal goes through. Emphasising the right to make bombs will only be counter productive.

I disagree with you. The countries you mentioned will sell their technology at inflated prices. No country is going to help India for free.
India should ban the information technology export to the US and Australia if they continue to ban exporting nuclear technology to India without conditions.

This is a win-win situation. India can proceed with the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, build more reactor, more nuclear power stations and get sufficient fuel from us and australia. It can delink its military programme, continue its nuclear weapon programme independently, without transferring material resources, but technology transfer may be possible. India has nothing to gain by exploding nuclear devices.

There are international safeguards regarding nuclear cooperation. What do we gain by banning IT; many countries including china will welcome it. We will be double losers.
