N-deal differences cannot be reconciled: Left
by damodaran mohan on Aug 15, 2007 02:03 PM  Permalink

Left is right that the n-deal differences cannot be reconciled. Actually the left is not concerned with the 123 text . Their main concern is to safegaurd Chinese interest from the increasing U.S. influence in the region . Countries like Japan, Australia , Korea etc. with strong economies are already U.S. allies in the region .So our left feels duty bound to check any similar U.S. ties with India that will go against China. So what even if China wants to gobble up whole of Arunachal.(Of course this is not to suggest that India should become a u.s. ally or crony) ! Further , left dreads the very thought of India voting against Iran in future in the U.N. for obvious reasons.

Leaving aside the n-deal , i personally feel the 'CMP%u2019 arrangement itself is basically flawed as the left is not part of the govt. It only implies power for left without responsibility. Do the left realize that if only left were part of the UPA govt. from the begining, possibly the n-deal would not have materialised or may be the left could have taken care of the 'strategic partnership' aspects beforehand ? So, the left have to blame themselves for the current situation. Left wants to have the cake and eat it too. Either the CMP should be scrapped or the left should be kept out of its bound.

Why Nuclear enery??
by Anjan Datta on Aug 14, 2007 11:44 PM  Permalink

India has a huge shoreline. Are there any efforts to tap tidal energy?
There are hot springs sprouting in most of the Himalayan belt. Any efforts to tap geo-thermal energy?
If India has supposedly researched and devised means to using Thorium, why is that not been followed?
Every hydro-electric project goes thru huge delays. Why can't these be expedited?
UMPPs have not been able to see the light of the day, even in terms of policy or process - not to talk about the projects themselves.
Electricity distribution is in a mess, and inefficiencies are at every step. Even if the inefficiecies are removed, there should easily be 10% addition to the power received by end-users.

What is the expected contribution of nuclear energy in percentage terms by 2020 - 10% (20% at the very best) of the total energy consumption.

In a country where even gobar is utilised in producing energy, the government can probably just spend half the effort of the N-deal in the usage of alternative technologies and improving efficiencies in the existing systems, and they would derive far higher and sustainable returns, and also much sooner.

by ssddssdd on Aug 14, 2007 05:20 AM  Permalink

I wonder why congress/left call it common minimum program ? Was common program or common menifesto not enough ? If they even say "minimum", wonder what actually they do (zilch )?

Taking Position
by Lalatendu Deo on Aug 13, 2007 03:26 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

We expect our elected representatives to be able to decide as to what is good for the country and what is not. They should do such things which will not jeopadise our future. There are instances that just to satisfy selfish esteem, our country's interests are put on an altar.

A thorough discussion on the Nuclear matter is certainly of importance. But as to whether it is a tilt towards US or not is not of that significance. If there is some thing in the final draft which goes against the interest of the country, let us speak of it and weigh the same in the larger context. But just rejecting the draft something without justifying objectively is not done.

We may summararily reject the 123 document, which is designed to guide us through the process of setting up of about a dozen of Power Plants. What alternative we have that can guide us to avoid a possible situation in which we would have a power cut of 18 hours a day. Certainly we neither can build even a single major Dam now, nor we can rely heavily on our depleting Coal Reserve.

If we have to go with nuclear power, then can we deal with any other country other than US? If not, can we extract more from them without taking them to the verge of dis-interest? If not, do we have many better alternatives?

Let us deeply study these first, before TAKING our POSITION.

Left does not want to discuss or debate. It opposes the treaty because it is with America.

If we had signed a treaty with China to gift away Arunachal Pradesh, Left would be nodding approvingly.

Section 123 of US Atomic Energy Act, Hyde Act & ''I N D I A''
by NarayaN NarayaN on Aug 13, 2007 09:38 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Look at the amount of Thorium reserves in the 'WORLD'. Look at India's share of it.
Look at how useful Thorium could prove to be in the very near future.
http://www.world-nuclear.org/info/inf53.html

Alright, next look at US Laws - try to understand Section 123 of the Atomic Energy Act and take it into consideration with the Hyde Act.
http://thomas.loc.gov/
Search for Hyde act with Section 123 of Atomic Energy act of 1954.
If you still see this deal as a 'Power or Energy' deal - I have NO WORDS to help you understand.
Manmohan first opened India's 'economy' - now we've got a billion people working as 'slaves' (jz that they're in Airconditioned offices making money in Dollars). If the US Industry Association were to decide they dont want to have Indian workers, where is our 'source' of money? If the US Govt puts laws hiking tax rates for companies employing Indian workers or importing from India, how many companies would still employ Indians?
By 'opening' India's economy, Manmohan has already created a huge slave population - now he is out n out to make India a complete slave country to the US.
Kudos to the Indian Congress Party - one needs to find out how much money they're making on this deal - we still remember the Bofors & the Oil-for-food scams, this will definitely surpass all previous records set.

Narayan,

All your arguments are either hypothetical or in coherent.

I shall like you to tell me as to what India is going to lose if at a point of time there is a break, temporary or permanent, on supply of nuclear fuel. And mind you, this is the only bottleneck about which we are all arguing.

There may be monetary loss. In the meanwhile, we are connecting about 50% of all villages in the country with electricity, which are not got power supply yet and our industries would require an ever increasing quantity of power.

If we succeed, we are taking care of an impending energy crises looming large overhead.

Are you prepared to take on an eighteen hour power cut on a sustained period? At least I am not.

if you think indians have not gained from opening the economy, you must be from Mars..

do you know indian professionals have got recognition in the world only because of that? otherwise, had you ever even seen a computer in school? had you ever heard of 6 figure salaries? had you ever heard of deserving people getting promotions other that those with Jack..!! had you ever seen roads and infrastructure being built at the pace it is currently being done?

ofcourse it is only begining to change so you cant expect to see the change everywhere, but given some time, you will see the effects all over the country...

If you think opening up the economy was bad and has resulted in slavery, i guess you are another of the leftist person. Why dont you preach the same to chinese who are also of the same clan as yours. Had the economy not opened you would probably be still writing on paper and not on the net.
