why not careful beforehand
by VIPUL MATHUR on Aug 11, 2007 02:33 PM  Permalink

The documents were not complete and so no fuss about it to send back the girl. Why so called Indian Genious working in America forgot this trivial requirement. It is simply as travelling ticketless in train and saying I have one left at home - will anyone expect that the train staff will agree....
We should not site examples of others being treated otherwise. Why not every other Indian is protected with Z Plus category and Black Cat commandos - it is requirement of the day for them only, so the waiver of law in exceptional circumstances...
HOW ONE CAN ENTER ANOTHER COUNTRY WITHOUT VISA DOCUMENT.......?????

Kolkata: Immigration officials deport 12-year-old
by Prem Mohan on Aug 11, 2007 02:30 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

As far as I remember, Prof Samar Guha was a communist party leader. Why is it that the children of communists like to live in the United States of America? Don't they feel frustrated and suffocated in a capitalist country?

Communists in india almost capitalists.
They are capitalists in form of communists.

I worked in a company in Hyderabad for almost
an year which was owned by a communist leader.
His daughters stayed in USA. Even, in the company, employees were treated horribly. He was paying peanuts to his employees. After this
experience I vowed never to work in companies owned by communists.

Never go with or work with communists.

Dear Friend,
If you were a passenger with out all papers in hand to US or other one AUSee if would have pull out your underwear and see whether any security threat to their land! and say you have given the original visa etc to terrorist. So please don't Indian Govt to be Sympathic to a child and so and so.. Ask the parents to be carefull while before travelling to any country. At least let the officals of our country be wrongfully be loyal to the security aspect.

After getting their US passport, they "forgot", a important travel document with which they are suppose to enter India... You deserve it 100 times mr.Tirthankar Gosh! Now you are blaming the officials! First realise your fault that you "forgot" the passport! Does a passport add to your checkin luggage weight? Try to respect your country's laws. We cant bend them for your careless and take it easy nature which you exibit only in India, not in US where you are begging right now!
But you didnt forget the following:
i) boasting that you are from the family of so and so...
ii) Trying create sympathy by making empty noises.
iii) Comparing a story or history, that you gave visa to so and so... because he was a politician or whatever may be!
Final word to you if you are reading this post sometime! Go and get lost to US and dont come back to India Mr! Atleast live as a good citizen in that country!... i know you would do it... because they will make sure you do it!

I think this girl should have been allowed temporary landing permit (even confine in airport) in the meantime Old passport which has visa could have faxed/courier to Official. Now in the modern world Visa validity can be confirmed through diplomatic channel.
More realistic approach is always beneficial.

I think the immigration officials were absolutely OK in not allowing the child in. They were just following the rules.

Ask the father what the American Immigration Officials would have done under similar circumstances??? Probably stripped checked the kid in the bargain and sent her back on the same flight!!

Communication
by BALAJI DASARATHAN on Aug 11, 2007 02:23 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

While we are in the Era of wireless & seamless communication, i hope that the details of the Visa given to the young must be available online. This could have been instantly verified by the immigration officials. On the other hand a matter of discussion whether the same officials would have deported a much wanted criminal in the very next flight. I hope that they would have waited for clearance from the higher ups and further interrogations. Thereafter they would have taken this step of deportation. When one can find online the information of the visa what prevents the officials to look into that and take consideration. Remember they are doing this to Indians residing abroad and not to foreigners coming to India. It is pathetic that this the 2nd time an innocent young passenger is to put to policies that are nothing short of useless.

Balaji, try entering USA with a VISa which may an error of date or something else. You will be stripped, racially abused & sent back by the first available flight back to your good ol' INDIA.

Have seen plenty of Indian film personalities, humiliated, insulted at the US airports & non of them had the balls to counter argue.

What the Indian authorities have done is just right. Go by the rules, if one changes the passport, you are no longer an Indian natioanl, just another allien (term used in the US of A)

In the era of seamless communication, passport details can be verified online too... so why even bother carrying a passport? The visa was issued on a passport, and hence that passport must also be presented with the visa for authentication. The child is faultless - all the blame rests with the parents, who should have checked that if nothing else, they had all documents on them. Which idiot travels internationally and doesnt double check his or her travel documents?

Guys,
Do you know that other countries levy a fine on the airlines which bring in passengers without a valid visa? Also how did the US Airport Authorities let her fly to India for which she had no visa? May be they were sleeping like they did on september 9/11

The immigration officials are not to blame
by Maximus Decimus Meridius on Aug 11, 2007 02:18 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

If anyone has to be blamed, it has to be the mother. How on earth do you travel internationally and forget a visa? No country allows entry without a visa, so why should India? Blame yourself. Rules are rules - the authorities cant have one set of rules for kids and one for adults.

"I hope bureaucrats at higher levels hear about this incident, so that another 12-year-old doesn't have to go through the same ordeal," -- another 12 yr old wont go through this ordeal if that kid's parents has the sense of checking their documentation before leaving for the country. As far as the sri lankan goes, he must've been on a diplomat visa, plus was a foreign dignitary, and will be treated differently. Diplomatic visas get special treatment anyway. Stop whinging and blame your own negligence. How does someone embark on an international flight and yet not bother to double check their documentation is beyond me...

PS: Why are diplomats treated differently? Would you rather have an international incedent, because that's what it'll invariably become.

Immigiration Official and Duty
by RAKESH DOGRA on Aug 11, 2007 02:18 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Immigiration official at Calcutta might have acted as per law in sending back '12year old child and her mother back to USA.
USA immigiration official would have done exactly same but only to persons other than white skin. They will definitely send back to Asians and Africans but would have allowed Ameriacn born or even to Eropean and our officials did not consider that these ladies were of Indian origin and were well known.Temprarory visa should have been given to them.
And world knows how efficiently and honesly our system works at Air ports.

Mr. Dogra
Stop complaining about the Indian system! If you really want to know how others function, tryin landing at Heathrow, on a non-british airways flight at early morning or after 5 pm in the evening and you will kiss the palm (i would have loved to use some other part of the body, but decency prevented me) of the indian immigration officials, when you come back! If u want more harrowing experience try budapest / milan / paris airports.

For the flights landing at heathrow before 6.30 am , the immigration counters are either short staffed or the process is slowed down till the officials come to the counters. The same thing happens when u land in heathrow after 5.30 pm in the evening. Heathrow airport would like u to remove ur shoes during security check but has no provision for chairs to sit down and tie up your shoes. Milan and Budapest immigration authorities - very rude and arrogant in asking questions and vanish from the posts quiet frequently! The idea is not to criticize any one in particular, but to show that the problem is universal!

Yes they are very rude to Asians and Africans and to Muslims in particular. This is the price people are paying for the terrorist acts commmitted by Islamic fundamentalists on Sep.11 and after that. That is the reason that American and European immigiration officials cosider every non white skin person as security threat and in comarison our officials are naturaly better behaved to us.You may like to kiss any of their body part for their so called good behaviour but I consder act of Calcutta official as unfair if not unjust.

Those rascals siting accross those immigration counters actually get red with envy and anger that a fellow indian lives abroad,a life he could never dream of...Thats the root of such unimaginably daft behaviour..Everytime I walk through the immigration counters at kolkata I am terrified that those bunch of idiots sitting there would try and invent a reason to stop me from entering my country...The day we Indians learn to treat others just the way we would like to be treated,we would be a different nation..Until then we are a story of individuals. My heart goes out to the family who suffered and Im sure the deep anguish will leave an indelible hatred for your own country and its people in one way or the other.
