12th century
by sugata chatterjee on Apr 24, 2007 12:21 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

It is not surprising you have not mentioned what happened to Nalanda University after the 12th century. It was destroyed by pious and intellectually bright muslim invaders and raged to the ground. The famous Alexandria University also met the same fate. By not talking of these great bandits you have served the nation. I feel Nalanda should remain as ruins only as an epitome of wanton aggression by some great foreign mahatmas who tried their best to destroy the Indian civilization, culture and religion. Government can make a new hi fi university anywhere but preserve the ruins where all the leaves and "tulot" papers on which Buddhist, Jain and Hindu religious thoughts and philosophy were written, were burnt to make fire and food for the holy barbarian soldiers from the Ghajani after butchering nearly ten thousand students and teachers. It must be kept as such as an archeological masterpiece created by the followers of that epileptic prophet.

Dear Sugata, dont worry the so called cheap politics of religion bases reservation will destroy the proposed university also. There is no point of making a university if u cant keep it saperate from politics. I am sure that soon IIMs are going to loose their charms.

As you said, the government will meddle with the education and spoil every good university.
Very soon the IITs and IIMs will become corporation schools.

Funding for University fine but not for preaching Buddhism.
by on Apr 24, 2007 12:11 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Govt Funding can be extended to restore the place of university and it should stop at that. Govt. funding should not be extended to preach buddhism or for that matter and religious teaching as it will be biased. Any ways Buddhism, which preaches, that world is Mithya (False/Sunya) does not need money as the World itself is Shunya!!!!

It is a real amusing pride for every Indian that the Nalanda University is shwoing a come back. It is indeed a pride for every Indian and in other words for all the Asians. I am looking forward for the dream come true. This effort of the Bihar Government will definitely bring old glory of Bihar back. Hope the presant residents of Bihar shall also support this move in positive manner.

It would indeed be a ream come true. It may be even worthwhile to publish a report on all the ancient Indian Universities or the schools of learnings (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Universities_of_India). So that, other states housing similar old universites can follow.

FYI, apart from these recorded universities, there were some which went unnoticed in our history. One such example is: The Kerala School of Mathematics and Astronomy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerala_School), which made tremendous contributions to the modern day mathematics.

MYTH
by advani on Apr 24, 2007 12:05 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

it is a myth that India was having some great universaties of its time, if so then why our people are counts least civilised and still uncultured in the world or why a single known learnet man was produced through these versities.
this is only to make us happy, nothing else.
otherwise give a single name like pluto, aristo, khayyam or aljaber bin hinyan ( founder of algenra ).

Ya.. Mr. Advani is obviously from the wrong side of the border, for whom history began with the islamic intrusion into India.. They take pride in being the successors of the barbarians who destroyed the ancient and world-renowned university in Nalanda.. Whom r they trying to fool by claiming the stolen knowledge from conquered civilizations (read Persian, Greek and Indian) as their own.. Its interesting to watch what happens in Takshashila (now called taxila) which has fallen into their territory. It too was a great university town during Alexander's time..

- Kautilya
- Chandragupta ( describbed as Sandrocottus the great by Megasthenes and pluto clans)
- Ashoka the great
- father of literature: Kalidas
- father of mathematics Aryabhatt
- father of surgeory: Shalya
- Huen TSang
- Lord Budhdha
- father of economics: Banijjya
All of them were from Nalanda and all of them existed much before/with these names you are taking. Every educated man knows this fact. Yes, if you prefer to hear west more than us, go with Pluto, in pluto.
It's your kind of Indians who know dostovosky's litarature as ultimate while know nothng about prem chand, it's your kind of pseudos who kno Shakespere but don't know that Shakespaere borrowed from Kalidas!
pathetic our people are turning who have borrowed all english knowledge forgettign our own.
And if your kind of historians continue to rule our children books, comign generation will put the question something like this:
Tell me even a man happened in India, name a sinle one which could give birth to us!
Instead check your ignorance before coming confident over your knowledge.

rohit, u r right. i am afraid that a day might come, when britishers and anglisised people like advani will say that britishers taught us how to talk and write. because they will doubt if languages like sanskrit, hindi, bengali, tamil, marathi etc existed in india. (because our scripts and languages are going to get extinct in another 100 years due to our neglect.)

Mr Advani, Do know that numerals are called HINDSA in arab and arabic in Europe. Bcoz they were passed on to Arabs by Hind and to europe by Arabs.

First read the history independently and then comment.
