At the end of the day, India is still the country that gives us ample opportunity to feel ashamed about ourselves as Indians. Very little has been done lately by our rulers to make us feel prowd.
People have all the time and energy for vandalism when Valentine's day is being celebrated or Richard Gere kisses Shilpa Shetty. Where were all those people when daughters of my country were murdered in the name of dowry? Who's effigy were they burning when our farmers committed suicide?
I often wonder who is it, that the young javan spills his blood for? Why don't we have reservations in the military where most of the officers are upper caste? Why should they sacrifice their future for a country that is hell bent on making sure that their kids compete only for the half the resources. It begs the question, is it even worth it? The way it is being worked out, it seems as though with reservations the only place left for the general category is in the military. This way when the Pakistanis come to kill us, only 'General Category' blood is spilt while 'Reserved Categotry' carries on with their corruption in government jobs and gets fat. (General JJSingh, Admiral Mehta and Air Marshal Major: I really respect you a lot but do you really think that the people you and your organizations dedicate your lives for, care about your future? What kind of a country are you trying to protect?; Doctor Kalam: You are my hero, but can you really shut Arjun Singh up? Do you really believe in the people that run your government?)
All those upholders of Indian culture need to be reminded that culture is not what our elders told us about. Culture is what defines and guides our life. If the men in our streets whistle at women, that's our culture. If we go about killing each other at the slightest sign of provocation, that's our culture. Who the hell cares what Rama did or where the temple stands if the ordinary people cannot get basic education and health care. All that money wasted on building mandirs and masjids or on Haj subsidies would rather be used to set up a new IIT or hospital.
For all those who believe that merit is the only decider, let me remind you that India has already disowned us. We really need to ask ourselves the question: Should I be paying my taxes to the Govt. of Inida so that its politicians can suck them out and celebrate their kids bithdays? Even if they were feeding hungry mouths, are these not mouths that spat on us in the first place? Instead, we are better off becoming citizens of another country where you will be judged on the basis of your skills. Where your taxes go towards your medicare when you grow older. The World Bank has made great predictions for India so you need not worry. Our future is what needs attention. India has already disowned us and does not care about us. At least we should therefore worry about our own future to prevent the "brain in the drain". As 'General Category' and middle class, we are already second class citizens in our own country. Might as well be second class citizens with wealth. It is time for us to leave India behind and build a new mother land; just like our ancestors once came to this country to make it their home. One is going to be way happier by moving to the US/UK and boasting about India's rich heritage rather than live in India and experiencing its atrophy. It is almost like we need to start another Quit India movement for those who believe in merit as success (or access to resources) seems to be more dependent on which woumb we slithered out of.

hai I really liked the last paragraph of your letter. Incidentaly I am writing this from Toronto where I am having a short assignment. After the recent happenings i really doubt whether I shall be coming back at all. Our politicians tend to underestimate the value of merit and so they can't realise the fact that it is infact thinking minds and not just multitudes that creat great nations. They want remote switches everywhere including the office of the EC.
It is essential for them to shout from the rooftops the benefits (my foot!) of reservation policy.
All they want to do is to grab the power, do man-maani with the constituion, the economy and the population of the country by planting their remote controls everywhere in every field.
This they seem to be intending to do through reservation policy where undeserving and incapable people are installed in highly sensitive and key positions to carry out the legal and illegal orders coming "from above".
Means the supreme safed topi, although she is not wearing one.
I am all for reservations for SC/ST and to OBC. We have to help the down trodden. BUT, Please delete the creamy layer. The argument of the reservationests is that if you delete the creamy layer, then the quota will be grossly under-utilised. So they concede that most of the reservation benefits are cornered by the creamy layer. How are the children of MPs,MLAs, IAS officers, Bank officers, Doctors etc etc entitled for reservations? Is it social justice? For example, take the case of the ST MP from Gujarat who was caught taking bribes to smuggle people abroad. There are hundreds of MPs and MLAs doing that, but unfortunateky he was caught. But the irony is that his children, grand children and great grand children will all reap the benifits of reservation!! So I request all the anti reservationists to focus only on deletion of creamy layer. All the MPs across the whole political spectrum will oppose it for a very simple reason. And that is "It is only the leadfers in the creamy layer who can deliver the votes of the Backward classes enmasse to the political parties". So these rogues will never go against their interests. You have to bring this message to the OBC masses and that is how the politicians are against deleting the creamy layer. It is difficult as they are really backward and the rich OBCs will thwart it. But that is the only way to fight this injustice to all and especially to the poorer masses in OBCs and that is the only way you can win this war.

Solution without thinking about the problem! You say all OBCs except the creamy layer should be provided reservation, because they are well-off. That means those who are not well-off economically should be provided reservation. Pause to think, Sir, are poor people from OBCs only? Not at all. Your logic would have had some sense if you had said all poor people irrespective of caste or religion or gender or region. Think!
Once you have done that, then you need to think whether reservation is a cure for poverty. It is not. Read Amartya Sen's articles if you don't believe me.
It is strange that no one seems to be thinking about what is the real problem we are wanting to solve, and what are the best ways to solve it.

Dearsir, I fully agree with your views that we must kick this party. The moot point is that how to kick this party? In mu opinion, there is one way , all the so called FC (O/c poeple) sholud unite and form a new political party wit the declared only one agenda that on returning to power , this party would scrap the entire caste based reservation system and instead it will provided reservation to all the needy irrespective to caste. Since all the present political parties are supporting the caste based reservationsystem so the votes of OBC, sc and st would be devided amongst all these parties and the single new party with new agenda carrying votes of all oc votes will return to power. Even in the worst condition it is not returning the full majority, a handful of MPs winning will open the eyes of these greedy politician that other caste people can no more be ignored. kindly think on this proposal
