Great News

The missile test fired is a good news. But at what Cost... keeping the Government developed missiles a side line, DRDO projects sidelined, many projcets like trishool where crores gone into water sidelined, a private company with all the officials from DRDO and its sub divisions became a group today and with foreign hands made it a success at what cost and whose cost?

I appreciate our deep concern and it is worthy to remember the US attrocities, in supporting the Pakistan. It is also worth remembering the 17 years of humiliation , before Mr.Vajpayee tested it again.

Today we do this with a straight head. And we should be proud of this, infact.

Regarding other matters...what to do? It is our fate. But do not worry much. The country will certainly progress. May be by next week, with a new financial strategy in pipeline our focus may be shifted to enjoy the glory of our nation.

Yes, I remember the following news-
In a notional lease of life for the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP) and the crippled Trishul missile in particular, the Government has approved a one-year extension for the DRDO to wrap everything up. It is clear, however, that there will be no further expenditure on the Trishul programme, effectively ending a two decade development run that cost over Rs 250 crore.
MiG-23 takes its final flight into history
DRDO faces House panel fire
US feels F-16 is right choice for IAF
Panel to look into Assam Rifles%u2019 grievances
Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee today said there was no question of %u201Cshelving%u201D the Trishul programme, though ministry sources told The Indian Express that the extension carried little weight as it was just an administrative formality. DRDO has been granted the extension merely to conduct a %u201Ctechnical audit%u201D of the technologies developed under the Trishul programme for possible use in future programmes.

The extension was granted under stiff resistance from the DRDO, which saw disbanding the Trishul as a deep embarrassment to the 200-odd scientists who have contributed to the programme, some of whom now man the highest levels of DRDO Headquarters.

The extension has however made the Navy nervous. With DRDO officially communicating its intention to conduct %u201Cproject closure%u201D and the government extending project time, it is apprehensive that the indigenous technology may be forced upon it next year. The DRDO, however, has given no indications about whether it plans to continue test-firings. Navy Chief Admiral Arun Prakash yesterday threw his weight behind the Israeli Barak anti-missile system, but the navy at large is of the opinion that the Trishul%u2019s fundamental technology is obsolete.

US didn't do any attrocities.
It is ok to go some money in the defense work as wastage, how much useable part in vegetable, that is what we have to take care of. Rest of them we can trash it out. One part of DRDO is Research & Development. During research with explosives, there would be always some wastages will be there.

Build Economy than Army
by asokan a on Apr 22, 2007 10:11 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The super powers of today built their economy first than the military. Let us downplay military buildup and concentrate on nation building. When we demonstrate the most sophisticated rocket technology, we must also remember that we have pot holed roads, power shortages, poor education, unemployment, corruption, poverty etc. Don't we have any technology to eradicate these?

Do you have any example?? To my knowledge all superpowers that became super powers had more potholed road, even at times no roads.

Again all these are independant things as par as effort is concerned. We have enough technical talent, financial resources to carry out all simultaneously, only thing lacking is meritocracy.
but as far as economic development is concerned, it cannot happen without borders beings safe. Nehru thought on the same lines as you, and caused immense shame and loss to the country.

Asokan

I dont agree with you with your statement. US is today a superpower partly because of its military prowess. did you know the highways of the uS were built during the world war to facilitate troop and tank movement? With neighbours like P** you never know what our most respected, revered neigbours will be upto. Unfortunately we dont have the liberty to ignore these important programmes. And remember, we are talking about investing a billion dollars at the most...that is nothing compared to the size of our economy and the prospects of commercializing this as a product to our friends outside of India.

GIVE BETTER PAY FOR OUR SCIENTISTS before they get fed up
by Grand Master on Apr 22, 2007 09:50 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Many of our scientists are LEAVING the DRDO and ISRO to software/it companies because of PATHETIC SALARIES. Please in this occasion give them a good hike comparable that of software guys.
These scientists in DRDO-ISRO are well qulified and selected from the university/college toppers thru several tests.
traet them equally..give them a good paycheck and make them happy -they are BACKBONE of india's power.

Well Said. I dont mind paying additional tax on high income individuals to raise funds for these programmes. These Scientists are our Gods! We need to take care of them before others do. Govt - Hike the payscales by 4 times....and the burden is peanuts when compared to what we spend on our politicians. At the same rate, make them more accountable...get projects completed on time...move towards a meritocracy

Paying more salaries to DRDO scientists is of no use. There is nothing good going on there except assebling imported parts and making reports. Only way for India to progress is to privatise Defence development. TATAs, Birlas and Reliance etc etc can all contribute to this. Military will have the choise to place order on best weapon. Now there is no choise for Army they have to just order what is available.

Raj, if you go one step further, we can buy directly from outside instead of producing, as you said foreign countries efficient as they already privatized a long back. Why don't we do that, that is also a best option. But the point here is not that. There should be some self-defensive items too, that should be in Govt. Hand. We can give orders to private firms in doing items, but main focus needs to be in the hand of Govt.

You may be right ! But , there is something else too... Scientists are promoted in such government organisations only when they compelte a stipulated period of time (such as 3 years)..Why don't we change that and appraise the scietists quarterly or annually similar to software firms..Why dont we pay for the talent and not for their age? I know that there are many lazy gooses too in ISRO as in any government organisation.
