Too much Exploitation
by mandar on Apr 14, 2007 05:30 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Dear friends,

The agents in India like Indman Services, J M Mehta, Asia Men Power and many others like this in Mumbai & elsewhere are exploiting the poor Indians like anything. These agents send thousands of labourers to Gulf Nations every months. They charge around Rs 70,000 to Rs 1,00,000 per head to provide their services. The poor labourers take loans from relatives & elsewhere or sell their property to come to these countries. The labourers think that Gulf is paradise and once they come here they will clear the loan in no time. But the situations are very different. The unskilled labourer earns Rs 4500/ per month for his 10 hours daily job. The skilled labourer like mason and carpenter earns Rs 7200/- per month for his 10 hours daily job. To earn more money they work overtime, atleast 5 to 6 hours extra. That fetches them another 3000 per month extra but takes away 10 years of life in one year. These people have to live in a very wretched conditions. The accomodation provided is such that one room is occupied by 16 to 20 labourers. Considering the expenses of these labourers here, they need to work atleast for 2 years just to pay the agents fees. These labourers in India can earn far better and stay with their families. More than the need of Indian people, it is the need of these Nations that Indians should work here.

How can we stop these agents from exploiting the uneducated and poor labourers. There are labourers coming here from other countries like Phillipines. They do not need to pay any money to their agents. The air ticket for them is provided by the companies that hire them. But for Indian labourers, the companies do not give the initial air ticket as they know the agents take money from them.

Dear friends, we spend a lot of time in discussing issues that do not really make positive difference to India. But if somebody can advise here how we can address this issue of exploitation of poor labourers, we can do something positive. Please bear in mind, the exploitation is done by our own Indians on Indian soil by some greedy agents thus taking out life of poor people.

If we can make our Govt to note this and do something, we will have achieved a great in our lives. Many of the people may be knowing people in media. If we can bring this issue through media, I think we can achieve some positive results in this.

Press the govt. to act. Get the media to do their job. Instead of gossiping and copying news from outside sources, our journalists should learn to do real reporting, help our people by denouncing such scoundrels.
The international news item about a small incident in Milan when police fined a Chinese woman for her car not being checked as per law should teach us a lesson.
The Chinese protested, the police intervened with batons, there was a clash between police and Chinese shop owners, the Chinese consul immediately (not taking his own sweet time),came to the scene to protect his countrymen and made a statement to the media. The Chinese PM wrote a letter the same day expressing formal protest and asking the Italian PM for an immediate explanation why his people are being treated like that.
Can you immagine Manmohan Singh or even the Italian Embassy protesting or coming into the picture to save Indians from being cheated, treated badly or being denied their rights?
Your answer can only be "NO". Not one Indian politician will take a stand to protect his own voters. Till he can milk them for their votes, it's OK but does he ever give back anything? NO.

That's why the agents can get away cheating the ingnorant labour class. The desire to be given some dignified and decent way of making a living is what makes Indians at ALL levels, the perfect prey for unscruplous agencies, agents and employers.
Those of you who live outside MUST press and create a big noise to force our press to take a position and press for social justice. Will Rediff take up the challenge?

Dear Mandar,

I have been in the gulf for close to three years and couln't agree with you more. There is exploitation everywhere. Right from unscrupulous agents to companies. Everyday there is at least one worker at the airport who has been tricked by the agent and has no where to go. The politicians too share part of the blame. They come to gulf seeking money. All big talk but hardly any action. We also have a minister for overseas indian affairs. But the things on the ground are hardly improving. It's high time one starts taking up the crudgels (at least by communicating in such such fora). This would increase awareness and caution people for succumbling to gulf dreams, Thanks

Its social and financially rewards that attract Indians...
by dinesh arora on Apr 14, 2007 11:21 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

social rewards, our Indian psyche or emotional intelligence of thinking working abroad is better...and financial rewards, earned dollars buying more goods and services in India...so salary earned in other country can buy more in India...and I wouldnt be surprised if India is totally bought by these people who earn foreign currencies...dont know why a labor logged for an american company should earn so much in Indian terms...some holes in economics...

If I understand you right you mean to say that the Anglo-Saxon Capitalism is looting the world thro' their Financial Supremacy of Neo-Colonisation. This has been in vogue for the last 300 years. Look they won the second world war and it is but natural that winners takes all. Better learn to live in this uni-polar world. This is what US wants to tell the world.

US Officials...
by Jitendra Joshi on Apr 14, 2007 10:31 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

This is going on since... We all highlight the achievement for previledged few, but majority always suffer. In USA manjority Indiand are well off compared to what??? India?? Why consider India when they are in US.
See their standars and standard of Living in there and compare it with local Whites.
In UK last week a legislation was passed for Uniform pay scale between Whites so you can imagine if inequality persists between Whites what could be the fate of other Aliens as they are called. Can't they say foreigners????
White in US & UK are the most hypocrates in the world. Because of over population and slow economic growth we suffered so far, but not any more.... hope so.

We want
by naveen fernandes on Apr 14, 2007 10:22 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Our society seems to desire and envy those with overseas jobs - at any level. This time it is the US, but more often workers in the Middle East work in tough conditions. Back home the hardships are not mentioned, but money flashed. This creates temptations for a "foreign" job and many people pay to get one.

Unfortunate, but this will not stop till more, employment at decent wages can be generated across the country.

On the exploitation, that will not stop as long as we ourselves beg to be exploited.

It is purely the stupid mind-set; Nothing else.

Why Kalpan Chawala and Sunita Williams excelled;
Dr. Amratheya Sen got Nobel Prize,
Dr. Sam Pitroda Conqurred and set revolution in Tele-communication,here in India,
look at the best of Multinationals in America- thier heads are mostly Indians;Microsoft-World Best Computer Software firm has more then 28% of employees are Indians;
India's Patelbhai and Motel are thriving business in USA.

Go to any India's International airport, all the plane's carry 365days Indian students, IT professionals, doctors, engineers and others to Destination AMERICA!!!.

So, what are u talking...?

American's have now extended the hand of Friendship to Indian's and our people must shed that
lathergy, lazy up-bringing and look at the enormous opportunity, economic well-being and elevated social status, the Land of Golden opportunity USA offer's to thos who work hard.

The only alternative to excell in USA is HardWork - yes, there is no place for laousy, lazy and lathergic India's!!!.

This is pure truth and reality and let Indian not live in dream world and suffer.

if you are that hard-working why don't you work hard and do something good for your own home country rather than talking about all this? it's not your fault sudhakar. i know there are millions like you who just take everything from india from education to living and live for other countries especially destination USA as you said. but that has always been the history of this wonderful land. it's always been exploited again and again and again. the only difference is that in the past it was foreigners and now it's been done by our own people. it's actually a shame..

this was exactly the kind of things i had on my mind and i felt very bad.. as a matter of fact i'm returning to india in 3 months to start my own business. and you should know that this is as funky as it sounds because of my urge to do something for and in my own land...

I don't feel anything wrong against Americans in most cases but they are also not perfect. Besides, people are just people. Americans might have some reasons too and many Indians have illegally overstayed in USA - this is hard fact, we can't deny. I take exeption in one thing - The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the 1998 Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, to Professor Amartya Sen, Trinity College, Cambridge, U.K. (citizen of India) refer http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/economics/laureates/1998/press.html. I have got nothing against Dr Sen but I am just stating the fact.
