Arey, what you guys are talking about insulting, NRN didn't do anything wrong, he acts in gentle man ways, that was magnified by media, now you guys magnified to 3x size with pages, the simple incident.
For everyone here: 1. Insulting the national flag, anthem, constitution are illegal in India and will be till the law is changed. This includes wearing the flag, cutting cakes etc etc. 2. An insult is open to interpretation. Thats what a judiciary is for. 3. Dont give examples from the US, each country has different laws. Nash did this, XYZ did this....doesn't matter. NarayanaMurthy hasn't been outsourced, he is an Indian citizen. 4. He can be the richest man, the most charitable man (if you want to call running a successful company charitable), yet the law cannot be charitable with him. 5. HE thinks his clients will be embarassed. Did any client tell him that? The question is did he play the instrumental version because the usual version is embarassing? If he did, is that an Insult? 6. Anybody who works for his company is paid. Even steven. Beyond the job, do they need to be enslaved to their master? We accept his jobs - should we accept everything else? My .002 cents on the issue - He was naive (for a business of his stature that is stupid). I think what he said is irresponsible and an insult. I am surprised he hasn't apologized as yet if he said that. if he didn't he hasn't clarified. he is probably finding a good lawyer!

How is saying mot being able to sing national anthem "MAY" be embarrassing to the foreigners an insult to the national anthem itself?.
This is such petty an issue. A jobless politician's gimmick for some media coverage. At the same time, i feel undue importance is given to the anthem and the flag. Respecting fellow Indians should be a greater priority that respecting the flag or the anthem.
Why was lalu prasad yadav not put in jail when he did not stand up for the national anthem during a republic day parade?..Whats wrong in having instrumental national anthem?..even the army does instrumental anthem...How can you question his patriotism ..if he wanted he could ve kept Infosys HQ in USA and took a US citizenship..Put people like lalu yadav in jail not narayana murthy!!

So..if one is let scot free, another should too? So the rich, the powerful and the stars can do whatever they want. Sriram has a silly simplistic view of the world and he has a sillier yes man in Satya. Well said what? You actually think, "So and So was not punished, so I should not be" is well said? God save you and God save Us.

don't drag the politicians into every issue. We cannot blame the politicians for everything. In fact most of the time it is the rich kings like us who are to be blamed. Thanks, Burger

Another Joker. politicians should be prosecuted. Cricket..politicians, Gulli danda- politicians, Politicians for everything. They are a reflections of society. Like what you just said - passing the buck and blaming somebody else for everything that goes wrong. You just spoke like one of them, let's prosecute you too.
the only person to be punished and so will he be i am sure later on for indemnity is that lawyer who filed the complaint. i can\'t believe the police is so stupid that they saw a prima-facie case in this!! a first year lawyer will be able to make murthy come clean out of this.
here is why- what is said that he avoided playing national anthem to avoid embarassing foreigners is great and gentlemanly act. a national anthem demand everyone to stand up and respect it, but as a national of soveriegn country you are not supposed to stand upto any national anthem. imagine if our anthem would have played, half of the crowd would be standing and other half sitting. it would be so embarasssing for the sitting people worrying lest they are contrued as disrespectful. therefore, in an mature and sensible international gathering you will see an anthem of a particular region is avoided. murthy acted sensibly and did just right. i wonder why though they had to play even the instrumental version. but murthy never commented on that, so he can\'t even be punished for that.
RE:what are u guys talking about?
by Homo sapiens sapiens on Apr 14, 2007 07:13 AM Permalink
Are you a first year lawyer? You sound like worse. 1. The national anthem was not avoided, a instrumental version was played. The laws for instrumental versions are the same. You still have to stand. 2. Great and gentlemanly? How can you use the word great so liberally? 3. International or national, all gatherings in India must follow Indian Rules. Do Indian PMs sit when the star spangled banner is played? 4. Read the constitution before you talk about first year lawyers. Prevention of insults to National honour (National Flag and Anthem) 1971 and previous. Imprisonment upto 3 yrs or fine or both. 5. Insult or not is interpretation. Foreigners were present etc dont enter the argument. Did you pass first year?
But he could have been a little more discreet when he made these remarks. Our sauve businessmen are so used to make smart diplomatic remarks at fora like Davos and other international levels, why do they choose to be careless about the National Anthem? Its not about Mr A or B.. the collective national spirit is to abuse the national symbol anyways..judging by the number of Flags lying strewn on the streets after 15 Aug and 26th Jan on Indian streets. Its only when a celebrity is caught, that our Indian patriotism awakens ? WAKE UP!! Patriotism need not be worn on your sleeve..it has to be within..all those who accuse him of being unpatriotic, please check your own contribution to the Indian nationhood first. Of course, that does not absolve him from the blame for making a CARELESS ,but harmless remark. Its not the person, its the collective soul of the nation that needs to introspect here.
This National Anthem issue is a minor issue which could be pardoned based on Mr. Murthy's appology. Playing instrumental version of national anthem is a widely followed practice even in ceremonies attended by The President. So Infosys or Mr. Murthy has not disgraced National Anthem. So the media question on this itself was a trap.
Unfortunately Mr. Murthy's reply was not appropriate. It was a stupidity on the part of the great man and not a cognizable offence. Shows that any one is fallible.
It was one of the lamest excuse he could give for playing the instrumental version. There are thousands of Indians working in US companies. Does that prevent any one from singing US national anthem in any of the functions. I have attended many functions organized by Indian Associations which started with US national anthem. I don't his remarks should accept such hue and cry for legal action against Mr. Murthy. The opportunistic politicians are trying their best to take advantage by tarnishing the image of this great man. This was the best opportunity they got push him out of the race for Presidency.

Instrumental music is ok... but saying that playing the actual song would have caused embarrassment to foreigners is simply BAD. They are in India, and they expect your national anthem/song to be in your language and not theirs..
Murthy has done a wrong thing... there is no doubt about that...

buudy thr is no0thing wrong, but the way he defended it is wrong, n he should be puniched for it.
All these guys who make a hooplah of those comments have not done 1% of what Murthy did for other people (not that he is a saint, but thousands of families in India lead a better life due to his business).
This is not Taliban land. You cannot put someone in jail for such things.
So what if his comment was insulting? Tell him it is so. What is this nonsense about punishment? All this dramatic showy patriotism is more often than not from useless douchebags.

sorry for that. it was a wrong comment. but you cannot talk so cheap.. whatz wrong in that job. Do you want Indians to just work in India and get isolated from others. Its a lucrative job and many are naturally attracted to it. Because of IT many people are benefited. Keep in mind that its not only the urban people who are benefited even many rural ppl are also benefited.

you are absolutely right..he is the only person who has provided us indians with job opportunities and we need to treat him above the pride and respect of our nation. No other person ever has managed to do it before...vow .. Its pointless talking to morons like you who like to applaud and endure people who make disrespectful comments about our national anthem

Mr. Venkat,
I agree with you that most of us posting messages here have not even done 1% of what Murthy did. But keep in mind that even great minds like Prof. CNR Rao believe that the coolie culture has actually harmed India. The thing is that there is hardly any real development happening in India. The coolies are making money just by servicing companies abroad. This has widened the gap between the rich and the poor. Thanks, Burger Qing
