Fearing Home ?!

Should we be terrified to come home ? India is not that bad.. massive change in attitude required !

It's not that simple. It's not just about having to come back to India but its about failure. Going to the US for education is a big deal, it will be a big embarassment if one has to come back because the failed... After all how many students actually come back?

Of course, that doesn't justify an attempt at killing the teacher...

Anant do you really believe it is so easy? One thing there is the stigma of failure. The other is that life in India is tougher. We have so many brilliant minds here but the opportuninties are limited. Look at the IIT/IIM exams! If there were ample opportunities here, who would leave the country in the first place.

What a cowardly act is that..An Indian doing it! I cant beleive it..In India students worship teachers..atleast thats waht we used to do..I dont know whats happening now..Staying away from India for so long..we tend to think India is the same now..but what has prompted..what has gone wrong..May God forgive him and teach him the lesson..

Daniel,
It's an insolated incident by a depressed individual who happens to be Indian. His being Indian has no bearing on what he did. His having "strict parents" or assumed poor working conditions or whatever the reason is, it's not his nationality.
And cut down on romanticizing what we have in India: 1. it's not relevant 2. what you say is not even close to the truth - students have been raped teachers here, murder and assault are everyday events - wtf are you talking about? You need a reality check man.
It's because people like you and rediff - who generalize isolated incidents as something refelection of larger groups (nationality, language, race etc) - people in US (or any other country) find it easier to stereotype us. Get some sense and quit praying for others.

Well Said suresh, I wonder if rediff is really pro india ! Several years ago a indian student working in a lab was poured gasoline and set on fire by two white students inspite of his dying witness, the judge refused to jail both the white culprits- US is racial dont forget that !

Susana,

Go take a walk... US is anything, but the judiciary is definitely not racist. Get some info about how law treats everyone equal. If those students were set free, that must have been due to lack of evidence.

Dr. Susana - if the title before your name is well-deserved, please note that the article on which you are commenting has nothing to do with the fact that America is a country of convicts or that all Goans are dumb; both your statements are false.

susanna,
u accuse U.S teachers of being biased and racist. and look at you--aren't you the one who is being racist to a certain community here (goans)?

as far as U.S teachers go, no, they are not biased or racist at all. i study at a U.S university and i can say they are the best tecahers i have come across. indian teachers are more biased and show favoritism. in the U.S, i have never come across anything like that. you work hard and study, you make the grade. if you can't do it, why blame on the teacher? after all, in the U.S unlike india, if you feel the teacher is giving unfair grades, you can always challenge the grades and have the student affairs look into it. so far, i have never heard of any student doing that cos all the teachers are very fair. unlike india, U.S university profs. are very dedicated people who love to guide, teach and learn from their students.

maybe i shouldn't be explaining this to you since you obviously are a very racist person juding from your remarks but i owe it to my professors here. they are the BEST!!

if you can't make it on your hard work and merit, blame it on yourself, not on the teachers. human beings don't go around butchering teachers for their inability.

as far as the war on iraq goes, that's a war and both sides kill each other. this case here is not a war, it's attempted homicide. plain and simple. don't try to justify one man's failures by bringing in totally unrelated issues.

Stop blaming racism for everything. No amount of racism can justify attempted murder. Having studied in two European countries with a much worse reputation for racism, I can state that this statement is ignorant and racist in itself.

And the US is not a country of convicts. That is Australia, but that in itself is a very racist comment to make.

why is it a disgrace? do you think everyone in india is a saint or something? do we not have people being murdered, raped, or robbed in india? i don't support what the kid has done, he will face punishment for what he has done for sure, but please understand the extreme pressure he was under when he decided to do something like that! it is easy to sum it up in just one line "disgrace to indian community," but just think for a moment about this young man who has his entire life in front of him; try and understand the extreme pressure he was under to just let one moment of insanity overtake his conscience and risk his entire career. Please avoid passing judgment on others when you don't really know what transpired in his mind to go to such extremes, with due respect to the recovering professor!

if he is under extream pressure he would have committed suicide insted of hurting others or come back home. it only shows worthless candidates are using influence and joining for studies thinking that they can even kill and get a pas in their examination. is it not worth to get punishment as per the law.

I dont understand why you are linking an isolated incedent to Indian Student Community. Every year 1000s of Indian students come to US for education and this dumb little guy just happens to be one of them. This guys seams to have lost control on his actions for which he'll pay a hefty price for sure. Indian students normally are nice and pleasing towards professors.
