That has nothing to do with Secularism. Look at any Dictionary. Secularism means religions must not enter into the Government actions.

vande matram

India is notoriosly known for half baked intellectuals. Maulana Kalbe Sadiq may be one of them?

He says if its not worship then vande matram is ok.

But does he knows what 'vande' means ?

Vande means 'vandana' or worship.

This is one fact. Other is woman worship or matriarchy is practiced by only section of indians, vande matram and jai matadi are matriarchial symbols not acceptable to all.

A word which is spelt always takes a meaning which the speaker feels, atleast in singing national anthem, where one sings it patriotically for oneself. When the word 'Vande' has different meanings - worship, salutation etc, Let a person wishing to salute or worship Mother India, use the word in his own way.

There are many other problems in our country that needs to be solved.

Islam - It needs to be more open and practical
by Amitabh on Sep 09, 2006 12:03 AM  Permalink

With all due respect to fellow Muslim Indians:

I think the problem with Muslims is that you still want to look at yourself as different (someone other than the common Indian). I understand that there have been lots of differences in the past, but it is important to realize that "We are all part of this great nation (India). Together we stand greater than the whole world." We are living in a democracy and we need to respect the majority opinion.

"The rules of the Nation/Law always comes first. No religion is taller than the rules of the nation."

I believe that the core problem with Islam is its limitation to look above and beyond the Holy Book. The core basis of humanity is to respect, care, help and tolerate other people and their view point.

The heads of the Islamic institutions need to have a open view point. The laws of any religion need to be reviewed by an individual and then take a practical decision whether or not to follow it.

Some rules written or created in 600-700 A.D. would definately would not be pracitcal to apply in the world of 21st century.

I hope you take this comment in a positive and constructive note. Thanks.

The word vande has the meaning Worship, but normally it uses as salutaion to something. In that respect, nothing wrong in using the word. It is just salutation to the nation

Maulana Kalbe Sadique deserves prais in being candid, brief and to the point in his interview. He is shrewd enough not to blame any political person though he knows everything. Afterall he is also a person holding a position so he has to be cautios. But we need clear cut plain speakers who should stand upright, say spade a spade. Anyway a good interview.

Vande Mataram, Another 1857 ??
by Neeraj Gangal on Sep 08, 2006 06:18 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Maulana Sadiq sahaab has expressed his point of view very

beautifully.

Each religion has its own terms and conditions which need to be

respected. Loyalty and Intergrity towards the nation are paramount,

but its presence (or absence) cannot be doubted on the basis of only

a specific form of expression.

For instance, in 1857, though they were men of integrity, the sepoys

were compelled to revolt - the Hindus to protect themselves from

eating beef, the Muslims to guard against eating pork.

Retrospectively, if the British East India Company were to doubt the

"Integrity" of the sepoys just because they refused to chew the

cartridges- it would not be a fair parameter to judge the soldiers'

integrity towards their profession.

If we can understand and respect the sepoys' predicament and the

subsequent 'War of Independence' under the notion of 'Nationalism',

why not give a genuine consideration to the Muslim predicament

under the notion of 'secularism'?

We claim to love our mothers. The Hindus bend and touch their

mother's feet, the Christians may not. Does that mean, they love their

mother's less?

We all love India. Each one has his own form of expression.

So be it.

vande matharam controversy.Shia cleric on the issue
by R.K.Sundaram on Sep 08, 2006 05:58 AM  Permalink

I agree with this article on vande matharam issue. As far as i could see the word vande in samskrit , it means only PRANAM in hindi . It only means arespectful homage to the mother india and no muslim can have any objection in paying respect to the motherland. Our ministers atleast some of them have got their foot in the mouth- viz obc reservation in institutions higher learning- I.I. Ts and I.I.Ms where only merit should be the criterion. and such ministers should be cut to size- and it is high time we denounce such over bearing attitude from these ministers - they owe their positions to the people - they very often forget this basic thing- they are not fit to be ministers.
