The following should be kept in the minds of all rational thinking persons: 1. India missed the bus by not exploding the drvice till 1968; what ever be its reasons; 2. Concerned with China's success and with other countries making efforts; fear of proliferation became real, against which the world powers brought in NPT (may be in the discriminatory form); 3. Having appreciated India's role vis-a-vis that of Pakistan and China, and also looking at the market potential in India, US wants to draw closer to India as per the July '05 agreement; 4. It however it can not openly support, India's using imported uranium for making bombs; 5. If India has not expanded its uranium mining, it is entirely the fault of India's senior scientists, who are still in power getting repeated extensions; 6. Now they want to cover up their slippages, by blaming US policies, while the country badly needs power, nuclear or other type; 7. It surely is a tricky situation where the Govt position is to be salvaged, for if the deal falls thru completely, it is the people of the country who will be losing and none of the scientists or the politicians; 8. Very calm analysis is hence needed.
I doubt if any clear thinking person with an unbiased mind and fairmindedness to keep away from "hairsplitting" will disaggree with the any of the statement made by Mr. Shourie. Surely he has come out with his views with circumspection. and as candidly as possible. Begging for a slight deviation from the subject, I am asking every Indian "Is it not high time for you to all be united and prove to the world that India is a power to reckon with and can take care of itself?"
