The author has well explained the situation of his withdrawal. It is really appreciated. We do not know that so much is in the waters in the election. However, Mr Shashi need not regret. Hats off to him again.
The first and foremost which struck me once I read this was "Santulan rehna chahiye", the famous dialogue between Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah in teh movie "Maqbool".
This is a pure political game played by the US to stop Indian dominance in the global arena, despits helping (?) (co-ordinating would be better) in other sectors. Basically maintaining a balance with positive and negative sides. By opting to vote for the South Korean contestant.
Thankfully (but very very painfully), Mr. Tharoor bowed out of the rally with a great heart, knowing their moves, just for political reasons. Best Regards Pavan K Chakravarthi M
I disagree with the term "bowed out".He did not. Tharoor was defeated. He knew which way the wind was blowing when the US made no secret of the poor consideration India is known for as world politics/representation goes. India herself is responsible for the poor show she puts on in External Affairs never taking a stand. Our petty politicians busily shopping for"phoren stuff" make no mark when they go abroad, most don't even know why they are there in the first place! Even Indira Gandhi,2 daughters-in-law inc. visited Italy cutting a less-than-happy figure, boasted an Italian hairdresser when in India, when she made a beeline for his salon( by his own admission, less than exclusive)to get their hair done upon landing in Rome! Couldn't they have done their hair in India? Indians have no respect for themselves or their fellow countrymen,so how can we expect or demand respect from others?Tharoor should perhaps show a little more respect for his countrymen and start by replying to his correspondence and respecting his fellow countrymen before seeking to represent the world that too in a corrupt and useless UN that marches to US orders. But then Indians love to follow orders don't they?
Tharoor represented a complete continuation of Kofi Annan - bureaucratic overload, superficial attempts at reform, conceit and incompetence. As Secretary General he could not have done anything for India as the post supposedly represents the world - he would have done even less for the UN as no insider is capable of seeing the rot within. India could have put forward a far better candidate such as Karan Singh who has lived and worked for the country - and there are surely others.
I ddn't know much about mr. Tharoor, prior to his coming to fame due to his candidature for the highest post of UN. However, It appears from his televised interviews that he is a natural statesman, a great thinker and polished diplomat. He has all the qualities - he is confident, he is youthful, he is presentable and is intellectual as well. He has proved that he can reach to this level though he had to swim against the tide. I see him the best candidate for prime ministership of India. He can project India as the nation of progressive thinkers.
