The word origin is not Swahili. It is derived from the Makonde root verb kungunyala, meaning to dry up or become contorted. Makonde is the region in the Tanzania/Mozambique border.

The correspondent has to see the condition in Gujarat specially in Ahmedabad and Surat. The chickengunia is the threat there it has affected the neurosystem of the suffering patients and they are in semi comma. Sterling, Apollo, other hospitals are full of cases. Surprised with the knowledge limited in Kerala only, while it is a matter of concern in Gujarat administration and health authorities because of no anti viral drugs. The testings were done at Pune laboratories may please be enquired seriously. The article has a casual approach towards the problem and is not complete.
Hello to all readers My father in Rajasthan has been badly affected from this virus. Even after one month he still gets fever, vomit, urinating problem and lack of strength.
Can any one tell me the remedy or treatment of this virus thru any MEDICATION PROCESS..
I was alarmed as every body else on the rising number of people being affected in alappuzha. I think one of the main causes is the non planned "developments" in this district. Alappuzha is always known for its backwaters and the greenery around it. But this has been threatened by the new roads which cuts across numerous rivers and rivulets whereby many stagnant water bodies have been caused which are ideal breeding places for mosquitoes. Atleast now the public and government should open their eyes and try to rectify these or we maybe facing more epidemics in these areas. Development is necessary but it should not be at the cost of the natural balance of that place.Roads should be built but they should have bridges across the rivers rather than having dikes or 'bands' across these.Hope that we will be able to control this epidemic and to prevent any more.
Your article contained a few errors. Chikungunya is a term derived not from Swahili but from Matonde which is a dilaect peculiar to some parts of Tanzania. The deaths of 248 people which occurred in the epidemic on Reunion island in France were not directly attributed to chikungunya. Only one case, in a newborn child, has been proven to be a death due to meningoencephalitis secondary to chikungunya infection. All the others sufered from serious other medical conditions which would have caused death due to any small stress. Therefore chikungunya is a disease with severe morbidity but is fatal only very rarely, and that too only if the patient has some serous underlying medical disorder. The deaths due to chikungunya in Andhra Pradesh and now being reported in Kerala have never been proven to be due to this disease. No confirmatory tests have been done in them. Note also that the epidemic in The South Indian Ocean affected more than 2,60,000 people and only 248 people died, and that too not directly due to the infection So please do not spread the message about chikungunya mortality Dr. Satish
