Why are we so touchy about everything?? Is it not possible to have a civilized discussion about anything in India today? This is an article detailing the culture and history of a certain part of India. So why are we getting so worked up about it? Because your part of the country is not represented in the article? Does Rajiv critisize any culture in his article? This is an essay. Treat it as such.
Do you guys mean to say that everytime Rajiv pens an article, he should take ALL cultures, ALL languages, ALL historical facts, ALL small-minded prejudices into consideration? In that case he will be writing an encyclopedia, not an article for an internet publication!
For Heaven's sake, if somebody writes an essay on the history of Delhi, will all readers from Chennai rise up and complain that their history and culture were ignored??
GET A LIFE!! If you can't appreciate an article, at least don't bring your bigotry into the comments on it.

Its truely a shame for Rajiv & top of that Rediff to post such so called articals. Tomorrow somebody else would come & post on North, East, West, Central, NE, NW, SW, SE.

Recalling the achievements, contemporary and past of sub identities in the vast Bharata Varsha is not doing disservice to the larger identity of Hindus as a whole or of Indians as a whole.To imagine that emphasising the larger identity will some how submerge the sub identities is to fly in the face of facts anywhere else in the world.Strong sub identities can and should be encouraged to contribute to a strong large identity.A strong Hindu identity will strengthen harmony in Indian Society today and tomorrow.
Geez.. I cant beleive people are fighting over this. If someone says that the south is great it DOES NOT mean that north is not great. You can write a lot of glorious things about every part of India. Quit finding a reason to blame others!
Has anyone ever wondered how come none of the Gods or events mentioned in Indian mythology ever lived or happened in South India? Yet South Indians are far more knowledgable about these Gods than North Indians. For example Krishna hardly ever came to South India, events of Mahabharat and events relating to Krishna's life happened only in North India. Rama too came South only to fight with Ravana. All other events of his life happened in North India. Shiva lived exclusively atop Himalayas. Vedas, Veda Vyasa, Sanskrit are all basically North Indian. However it is the South Indians who have totally embraced this culture and the Gods and preserved it and revered it. They may not have had to face foreign invasions like North India or for that matter bear the brunt of partition but it is to the credit of their sincerity and hard working nature of the South Indians that we see them on the rise. Most South Indians do learn Hindi because they know it will be needed if they are posted to North India however most North Indians have such prejudice for South Indian languages that they hardly make any attempt to learn it.
I saw the various posts on the above subject, and as a person who has lived in both North and South India, I believe I should give my opinion here.
First of all, many have suggested that North/South divide is based on differnces of Aryan/Dravidian cultures. Let me tell you that there is nothing called Aryan invasion of India, and it is not even clear if anybody called Aryans existed. True, India has been invaded many times and North India bore the brunt of those attacks. It may be as a result that the physical features of North Indians are different from South Indians (it is not a genaralization as many people in south india are taller and fairer than their counterparts in north india). One more evidence to this is that the percentage of Sanskrit, which is supposed to be the language of Aryans, is much more in Malayalam than any other Indian language. The fact that South India is prospering more nowadays is directly related to the fact that its people are more educated and law and order situation is better in south india. The fact that North India is lagging behind because it did not give equal opportunities to its people, backward castes are treated as animals ---- no space
Hi Rajeev, I was hoping more from you, that you would transcend the common and unite all Bharateeyas! The history of Bharatvarsha goes back to the days of Ramayana and Mahabharata and every region of this great land of ours is charming. My Bharatvarsha also includes regions of Pak and BD, which was sadly partitioned for wrong reasons. Although I come from the southern part, I have a bias towards North India. I am perfectly at home in UP, Haryana or Punjab and love the company of Bihari workers in Delhi. I find more simplicity among people so-called BIMARU states. When I travel along Ganga or Yamuna, I get emotionally charged because the basis of our Sanatana Dharma was laid here. The land of Rama and Krishna, where Krishna played as a child are in North India. As a Hindu I love the land where Krishna gave us BhagavadGeeta. Northerners may be rustic, but have complementary qualities. According to Swami Shivananda (a Tamil brahmin by birth) Northerners have more reverence to learned people and saints. He attributed the prosperity of Punjabis and Gujaratis to their generosity, especially to saints. India's other icons Buddha, Ashoka, Guru Govinnd - are from Bihar! NB

i would like this man who seems to be more embarrassed of his nation to stop giving absolute figures and talk in terms of percentages.
in a country of 1 billion if 300 million are below poverty line thats 30% . many african nations have 90% people below poverty line. similar percentages should be calculated for other parameters and then you will find that we are in fact much better of than others . stop trying to make your own nation appear as if its some godforsaken land like afghanistan .

Here'a an explanation as to why China is "doing better". They are a relentless, single minded, military oriented, iron fisyted, regimented dictatorship, which on top of that is self glorifying and totally un self critical.
I'm surprised to see this article!! We must proud to be an India not as South Indian and North Indian. You guys have so much hatret about your own country?? Should not publish this kind of article which spreads hate and sepratism!!

Vijayanagara was bilingual. Its founders were Kannadigas Its kings were Kannadigas But great king Krishnadevaraya was more interested in Telugu and he had more Telugu couriters.
